California artist Timothy Robert Smith was commissioned to design and install a mural on the back exterior wall of the Bailey Contemporary Arts in the area known as Artists Alley. The mural, Beach Scene on Building with Windows, is a realistic bonfire scene based off of a photograph. The mural measures approximately 21 feet tall by 21 feet wide. Smith describes his artwork as observations of the world from all possible perspectives.

The current study sheds light on the representation of traditional women belonging to Punjab and their allegorical representation through Sufism in their poetry and paintings. Women were, and still are an integral part of art and artistic expression throughout human history from pre-history to modern times. The representation of women as an expression of art is an essential aspect of the history of art. This paper highlights the cultural and traditional depiction of women in the art of Chughtai, Ustad Allah Bakhsh, Amrita Sher Gill, and Anna Molka Ahmed through attire and its metaphorical representation by analyzing various form of their arts. The selected paintings focus on the traditional depiction of Women in Punjab, Pakistan, and provide themes, and styles associated with women in paintings of Punjab representing Punjabi culture. Such paintings are very expressive and ideally formalized with great delicacy and devotion, giving importance to womanhood through allegory and allegorical representation. The role of females and their interpretation through Sufi poetry is explained in the visual of painter’s work chosen as subject matter. This paper reflects female attire in visual art and poetry of Punjabi culture, prevailing an idiosyncratic Punjabi identity. This study also reflects content analysis of female representation through attire in poetry and painting within the context of the region of Punjab, Pakistan.

The new urban canvas tapestry, which is a component of the Columbia Streams Art public art program, measures 15 feet wide by 10 feet tall, and is comprised of images and artistic expressions by ten different local visual artists, poets, and jewelry designers. It represents painted visual art, sculpture, jewelry design, and poetry. The basketball court inside the William C. Sims Recreation Center in Winston-Salem was recently named in honor of Ben Piggott. Piggott was a long-time supervisor at the Rec Center. He retired after more than 20 years of service to the youth of Winston-Salem.

Similar to silicon that is the basis of conventional electronics, strontium titanate (SrTiO3) is the bedrock of the emerging field of oxide electronics. SrTiO3 is the preferred template to create exotic two-dimensional (2D) phases of electron matter at oxide interfaces, exhibiting metal-insulator transitions, superconductivity, or large negative magnetoresistance. However, the physical nature of the electronic structure underlying these 2D electron gases (2DEGs) remains elusive, although its determination is crucial to understand their remarkable properties. Here we show, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), that there is a highly metallic universal 2DEG at the vacuum-cleaved surface of SrTiO3, independent of bulk carrier densities over more than seven decades, including the undoped insulating material. This 2DEG is confined within a region of ~5 unit cells with a sheet carrier density of ~0.35 electrons per a^2 (a is the cubic lattice parameter). We unveil a remarkable electronic structure consisting on multiple subbands of heavy and light electrons. The similarity of this 2DEG with those reported in SrTiO3-based heterostructures and field-effect transistors suggests that different forms of electron confinement at the surface of SrTiO3 lead to essentially the same 2DEG. Our discovery provides a model system for the study of the electronic structure of 2DEGs in SrTiO3-based devices, and a novel route to generate 2DEGs at surfaces of transition-metal oxides.

We study the far-infrared (IR) and sub-millimeter properties of a sample of ultraviolet (UV) selected galaxies at z\sim1.5. Using stacking at 250, 350 and 500 um from Herschel Space Observatory SPIRE imaging of the COSMOS field obtained within the HerMES key program, we derive the mean IR luminosity as a function of both UV luminosity and slope of the UV continuum beta. The IR to UV luminosity ratio is roughly constant over most of the UV luminosity range we explore. We also find that the IR to UV luminosity ratio is correlated with beta. We observe a correlation that underestimates the correlation derived from low-redshift starburst galaxies, but is in good agreement with the correlation derived from local normal star-forming galaxies. Using these results we reconstruct the IR luminosity function of our UV-selected sample. This luminosity function recovers the IR luminosity functions measured from IR selected samples at the faintest luminosities (Lir ~ 10^{11} L_sun), but might underestimate them at the bright-end (Lir > 5.10^{11} L_sun). We present combined Halpha+HI rotation curves for a sample of spiral galaxies. Most of the velocity profiles (spectra at single points) in these galaxies are asymmetric, preventing the use of standard methods like the first moment analysis and the single Gaussian fitting. We thus propose a method similar to the Envelope-Tracing method (Sofue & Rubin 2001) to analyse those profiles from which we obtain HI rotation curves in good agreement with the Halpha rotation curves. These final rotation curves provide the required high resolution in the inner parts of the galaxies, but also extend out to typically 2-3 optical radii. They will hence allow us to investigate the distribution of dark matter.

We report the discovery of 158 previously undetected dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster central regions using a deep coadded $u, g$ and $i$-band image obtained with the DECam wide-field camera mounted on the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory as part of the {\it Next Generation Fornax Survey} (NGFS). The new dwarf galaxies have quasi-exponential light profiles, effective radii $0.1\!

The sources SDSS\,J113126.08-020459.2 and SDSS\,J110851.04+065901.4 are two double-peaked [O III] emitting AGN, identified as candidate binary AGNs by optical and near infrared (NIR) observations. We observed the two sources with high resolution Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) using the European VLBI Network at 5\,GHz, reduced VLA observations at three frequencies available for one of the sources, and used archival HST observations. For the source SDSS\,J113126.08-020459.2, the VLBI observations detected only one single compact component associated with the eastern NIR nucleus. In SDSS\,J110851.04+065901.4, the VLBI observations did not detect any compact components, but the VLA observations allowed us to identify a possible compact core in the region of the north-western optical/NIR nucleus. In this source we find kpc-scale extended radio emission that is spatially coincident to the ultraviolet continuum and to the extended emission narrow line region. The UV continuum is significantly obscured since the amount of extended radio emission yields a star formation rate of about 110 \msunyr, which is an order of magnitude larger than implied by the observed ultraviolet emission. Our analysis confirms the presence of only one AGN in the two candidate binary AGNs.

Observational evidence indicates that the role of gas is secondary to that of gravity in the formation of the most luminous spheroids inhabiting the centres of galaxy associations, as originally conjectured in the late 80's/early 90's. However, attempts to explain the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) of massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) -- a tilted version of the scaling relation connecting the size, velocity dispersion and mass of virialized homologous systems -- based on sequences of pairwise mergers, have systematically concluded that dissipation cannot be ignored. We use controlled simulations of the previrialization stage of galaxy groups to show that multiple collisionless merging is capable of creating realistic first-ranked galaxies. Our mock remnants define a thin FP that perfectly fits data from all kinds of giant ETGs in the local volume, showing the existence of a unified relationship for these systems. High-ranked galaxies occupy in the FP different areas than standard objects, a segregation which is viewed essentially as zero-point offsets in the 2D correlations arising from standard projections of this plane. Our findings make a strong case for considering hierarchical dissipationless merging a viable route for the formation of the largest galaxies in the universe.
