The NATO Alliance has acknowledged from its inception that military and economic advantage would accrue from the promotion of commonality, or at least comparability, in tactical doctrine, modes of organization, procedures and equipment. For many years, however, achievement fell short of aspiration, especially in development and production of military equipment. NATO fielded a large variety of equipments over the years for essentially equivalent roles. Standardization offers the prospect of greater interoperability among Alliance armed forces and also less expense in the acquisition of weapon systems, because of scale and other economies, and logistics savings over the lifetime of weapons. More economical procurement is not the ultimate purpose of the rationalization effort, however, but rather a way of safeguarding military effectiveness in the face of budgetary constraints. The five top priority areas for interoperability and standardization established by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and are endorsed by the NATO Military Committee are: (1) command, control, and communication systems; cross-servicing of aircraft; (3) ammunition; (4) compatible battlefield surveillance/target designation/acquisition systems; (5) interoperability and standardization of components and spare parts in all programs.

Excellent beam quality is indispensable for industrial application of high power lasers. However, high-power laser oscillation produces temperature gradients and thermal lensing inside the laser gain media resulting in laser power breakdown. This report describes fabrication of waveguide structures using Nd:YAG and YAG ceramics and investigation of their laser oscillation properties. The ceramic laser gain media evaluated was fabricated using materials controlled at macro-, micro- and nano-levels, and bonded into stacked waveguides which showed that generation of a high-power laser from a small gain medium (10mm x 32 mm) is possible. Laser output power was determined for a series of input power ranges (100-300 W, 400-600 W) and was found to increase rapidly almost linearly at 80 W or more absorbed power. Maximum output, 266 W, was momentarily achieved at approximately 680 W of absorbed power with over 46% slope efficiency without cracking the sample. Saturation of output power occurred at 260 W or greater absorbed power.

Come Rack! Come Rope! is a historical novel by the English priest and writer Robert Hugh Benson, a convert to Catholicism from Anglicanism. Set in Derbyshire at the time of the Elizabethan persecution of Catholics, when being or harboring a priest was considered treason and was punishable with death, it tells the story of two young lovers who give up their chance of happiness together, choosing instead to face imprisonment and martyrdom, so that "God's will" may be done. <br><br>The book was written nearly nine years after Benson's reception into the Catholic Church. The inspiration for the story comes from Dom Bede Camm's account of the recusant Fitzherbert family in Forgotten Shrines (1910), and from Benson's own visit in 1911 to Padley, home of the Fitzherberts, and scene of part of the novel, in order to preach at the annual pilgrimage there. The title of the book is taken from a letter of Saint Edmund Campion in which, after torture, he assured Catholics that he had revealed "no things of secret, nor would he, come rack, come rope." Eight years later, after weighty consideration, Robert Benson converted to Roman Catholicism. This 1898 book is the result of a survey of 107 hymn-books. The thirty-two hymns are ranked in order of popularity. The texts in this recording are said only, not sung, along with a few explanatory notes for each hymn (some footnotes, not all, here recorded). Two wealthy families are neighbors in Elizabethan England; one is staunchly Catholic and the other is devoutly Protestant. The attractive young scions of the families are drawn to each other in friendship and love, but are kept apart by their opposing religions. Life is very difficult for Catholics during those times.
