This study aims to understand how different contextual factors lead users of WhatsApp to believe, share, and challenge both accurate and inaccurate information shared by different people in different contexts on this platform. We will recruit participants who are UK residents and use WhatsApp and randomly assign them to seeing a vignette that asks them to imagine that someone has shared some information on WhatsApp. The vignettes will vary in terms of the topic and accuracy of the message, the identity of the user who shared it, whether the message was shared in a one-to-one conversation, small group, or large group, and whether the message included a source. We will then measure participants’ response in terms of their view of the imagined scenario: perceived accuracy of the message, whether they would be likely to share it and challenge it, and broader attitudes towards misinformation and anti-misinformation policies on personal messaging. Our experimental design aims to derive causal inferences on the contextual factors that lead WhatsApp users to process and react to true and false information shared by different users, in different contexts, and with different markers of provenance.

In severe outbreaks such as Ebola, bird flu and SARS, people share news, and their thoughts and responses regarding the outbreaks on social media. Understanding how people perceive the severe outbreaks, what their responses are, and what factors affect these responses become important. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study of understanding and mining the spread of Ebola-related information on social media. In particular, we (i) conduct a large-scale data-driven analysis of geotagged social media messages to understand citizen reactions regarding Ebola; (ii) build information propagation models which measure locality of information; and (iii) analyze spatial, temporal and social properties of Ebola-related information. Our work provides new insights into Ebola outbreak by understanding citizen reactions and topic-based information propagation, as well as providing a foundation for analysis and response of future public health crises.

In a collaborative interview between our university (Abdullah Gul University) and the Industrial Chamber, we explored managers' views of the younger generation. The common idea was that Gen Z had high expectations but showed minimal effort. This led me to consider the role of social media, given its dominance in their lives compared to older generations, since Gen Z was born in a technology era. The Social Comparison Theory proposes that people tend to compare themselves innately. Therefore, I pondered how the social comparison theory might influence their unrealistic goals and, consequently, their perseverance. I am particularly interested in how social comparison theory may occur in social media among the young generation, which is Instagram specifically in this study. For these reasons explained, I will investigate the relationship between social comparison on Instagram and its effects on the perseverance level of the young generation.

The transformation of the developmental process from animal rationale, through homo communicans into the (un)aware homo symbolicum and the man receiving and distributing media information today, available through multimedia tools in his everyday life, encourages thought on the contemporary man, as well as the purpose, point and sense in contemporary education. The fact is that an individual's life today cannot function deprived of virtual communication. It is possible to state that the world of mass and new media, changed the perception of reality in an essential way. Given the ontic nature of new media being based on technology i.e. the matrix of technical mediation of the real, fiction becomes reality and facts are (re)interpreted as media information. They not only aren't the measure or the guide in a theoretical context, they can also lead to an uncontrolled and unpredictable course of media information, due to their truthfulness not being questioned. That is how the global presence of media sets the forms of social life and sometimes relativizes the unquestionable nature of information, thus hiding the fundamental questions of the survival of humane values. In such a context, ontology and ontological relativity provide a landmark in the review of the truthfulness of facts, theories and scientific theoretical settings, especially when (re)defining the notion of contemporary education in the so-called "cyber" world. For those reasons precisely, taking into consideration the causality of the relationship between contemporary media and the multimedia reality in which an individual is located, and in the context of ontological relativity, this paper attempts to search for the understanding of contemporary education of man and of the true, without which true education as such is not possible.

While social media analysis has been widely utilized to predict various market and political trends, its utilization to improve geospatial conflict prediction in contested environments remains understudied. To determine the feasibility of social media utilization in conflict prediction, we compared historical conflict data and social media metadata, utilizing over 829,537 geo-referenced messages sent through the Twitter network within Iraq from August 2013 to July 2014. From our research, we conclude that social media metadata has a positive impact on conflict prediction when compared with historical conflict data. Additionally, we find that utilizing the most extreme negative terminology from a locally derived social media lexicon provided the most significant predictive accuracy for determining areas that would experience subsequent violence. We suggest future research projects center on improving the conflict prediction capability of social media data and include social media analysis in operational assessments.

Through a series of focus group interviews, 63 students at George Mason University (Virginia) related their academic and student life experiences. The goal of the researchers was to find a means of reporting the findings in a way that retained the integrity of the contextual data (student voices) and maximized audience impact. Three ways of reporting the findings were explored: written report; slide show with or without video inserts; and video. The two basic advantages to reporting via written text were that it maximized the use of the transcribed data and increased the usefulness of the data since there were no technical constraints except degrees of word processing proficiency. The main disadvantage was the written report's minimal degree of impact. Reporting research findings using a slide show presentation had three main advantages: (1) information can be organized and disseminated quickly through a bullet format; (2) major points can be highlighted easily and quickly; and (3) video clips can be incorporated with contextual data. The disadvantages are that bullets alone lose the richness of the written text and the contextual data, and that video clips need large amounts of computer memory. One of the major advantages of the video format is that a researcher can maximize the impact of findings by reaching a larger audience more quickly; in addition, text can be connected to a speaker. However, video reporting is very time consuming; the most salient disadvantage is that technology often increases the potential for altering the message. (AEF)

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures can be characterized as treatments that alter a person’s appearance without surgically cutting into the skin to achieve results. Examples of these procedures include: botox, facial fillers, laser hair removal, skin lightening treatments, and chemical peels. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are increasing in popularity and contribute to the multi-billion dollar beauty industry. In addition, "influencer" culture on social media platforms, such as TikTok, have created a new way for these types of procedures to be marketed to even more potential consumers. Although non-surgical cosmetic procedures are often labeled as spa treatments or self-care, the purpose of these procedures is often to alter appearances to reflect current beauty standards, including reducing any signs of the natural aging process. This review and media analysis aims to explore the social factors that encourage women to seek non-surgical cosmetic procedures as more research is needed to understand the driving forces behind these decisions.

This project will be part of a PhD dissertation about consumer empowerment, especially for Young Indonesian People when they are exposed to unhealthy food. Young Indonesian People are considered vulnerable because they keep becoming the target of other countries’ industries, especially when using social media influencers. We use K-Food as the case, especially the food with long-term health risks such as instant, spicy, and grilled food. This paper analogises the population of such networks to populations encountered in mathematical ecology, and seeks to evaluate whether three metrics of diversity used in ecology - Shannon's $H'$, Simpson's $\lambda$ and $E_{var}$ proposed by Smith and Wilson - give valuable information about the composition and diversity of TDNs. It concludes that each metric has its particular use, and the choice of metric is best understood in the context of the particular research question.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the need for developing learning media in the form of flipchart media with the jigsaw method to improve students' understanding of concepts in class X vector material. The method used is quantitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through observation and interviews accompanied by documentation and literature review to review related research. From the results of the analysis carried out in physics learning, many learning media use print media. This is because the use of non-print media that has been used previously has several shortcomings when applied in offline learning but does not rule out the possibility of continuing to use it in offline learning. From the results of the data obtained, printed media in offline learning makes students better understand the material presented. This shows that there is a need for the development of more interesting learning media, for example illustrated learning media with flexible access that can be used in offline and online learning. Based on the results of the research that has been done, it shows that there is a need for appropriate media development in physics learning. One of the developments that can be done is to develop flipchart learning media using the jigsaw method.

The purpose of this study has been and continues to be an assessment of the ways in which mass media play a significant role in constructing the public's understanding of breast cancer as a social problem, a disease, and personal illness experience. This fourth annual & final report primarily summarizes work conducted as a result of a one-year extension of remaining grant funds. This portion of the study focuses on a case study of a viewing season of the situation comedy, Murphy Brown, during which the lead character was portrayed as being diagnosed and treated with breast cancer, while coping with demands of daily living including work, friendships, and parenting. This case is an exemplar of the simultaneous attempts to use entertainment television for the pro-social objective of raising awareness and extending understanding about this disease, as well as appropriating the dramatic aspects of this same life-threatening disease for entertainment purposes. Of special interest is the use of comedy to communicate serious information and, often poignant, issues.

Government social media has reshaped both information disclosure and public engagement, creating new opportunities to enhance transparency. Against the backdrop of China's anti-telecom fraud propaganda, this study aims to explore the realization mechanism of transparency in government social media. An online survey experiment will be conducted to investigate the impact of level of detail and emotional embedding on citizens' understanding. The independent variablesare the level of detail and emotional embedding, while the dependent variable is the degree to which citizens understand the information.

How does the multiverse approach benefit communication research using observational (big) data? In recent years, open science tools like pre-registration and pre-analysis plans became increasingly popular in the social sciences. While they have mainly been used for experimental studies, they can also be used to register hypotheses beforehand when working with observational data. However, even with best intentions, a researcher is left with many, often arbitrary, analytical choices along the data analysis path. This ability to run equally plausible models increases the chance of false positive findings. The multiverse approach, in contrast, makes all analytical choices explicit, and runs analyses on all combinations of data processing and modelling paths. To date, multiverse analyses are not used widely in social science research using observational data. In our study we include three main categories of analytical choices a researcher faces that have been covered in previous multiverse studies: (1) variables (selection, operationalisation, choice of controls), (2) case selection and exclusion, and (3) modelling (functional form, estimation). In addition, we include (4) text pre-processing as an additional challenge for the robustness of results in text-as-data projects. To illustrate the multiverse approach, we use a research question that has received much attention in the study of news and social media over the last decade: What content characteristics determine if a news article receives a lot of engagement on social media? Prior studies concerning news sharing and user engagements in social media point towards the role of general news values (García-Perdomo et al., 2018; Trilling, Tolochko & Burscher, 2016) -- such as geographical or psychological proximity, negativity (in terms of controversy or conflict), or human interest -- as well as informational utility of messages being shared (Kümpel, Karnowski, & Keyling, 2015; Valenzuela, Piña, & Ramírez, 2017). Yet these studies generally disagree about the specific direction of the influence regarding aforementioned factors; while some studies find that news sharing is positively influenced when the contents are negatively valenced (Valenzuela et al., 2017), yet others found the opposite patterns (Trilling et al., 2016). Likewise, studies often yield a mixed support for the role of emotional and arousing contents (e.g., Berger, 2011; Trilling et al., 2016). To answer this question, we make use of the useNews dataset (Haim and Puschmann 2020) that includes 2.99 million news articles from 12 countries and 9 languages, as well as engagement metrics and meta data of 4 million Facebook posts referencing these news articles collected between 2018 and 2020.
