11A Multiverse Approach To Understanding News Engagement On Social Media

By

How does the multiverse approach benefit communication research using observational (big) data? In recent years, open science tools like pre-registration and pre-analysis plans became increasingly popular in the social sciences. While they have mainly been used for experimental studies, they can also be used to register hypotheses beforehand when working with observational data. However, even with best intentions, a researcher is left with many, often arbitrary, analytical choices along the data analysis path. This ability to run equally plausible models increases the chance of false positive findings. The multiverse approach, in contrast, makes all analytical choices explicit, and runs analyses on all combinations of data processing and modelling paths. To date, multiverse analyses are not used widely in social science research using observational data. In our study we include three main categories of analytical choices a researcher faces that have been covered in previous multiverse studies: (1) variables (selection, operationalisation, choice of controls), (2) case selection and exclusion, and (3) modelling (functional form, estimation). In addition, we include (4) text pre-processing as an additional challenge for the robustness of results in text-as-data projects. To illustrate the multiverse approach, we use a research question that has received much attention in the study of news and social media over the last decade: What content characteristics determine if a news article receives a lot of engagement on social media? Prior studies concerning news sharing and user engagements in social media point towards the role of general news values (García-Perdomo et al., 2018; Trilling, Tolochko & Burscher, 2016) -- such as geographical or psychological proximity, negativity (in terms of controversy or conflict), or human interest -- as well as informational utility of messages being shared (Kümpel, Karnowski, & Keyling, 2015; Valenzuela, Piña, & Ramírez, 2017). Yet these studies generally disagree about the specific direction of the influence regarding aforementioned factors; while some studies find that news sharing is positively influenced when the contents are negatively valenced (Valenzuela et al., 2017), yet others found the opposite patterns (Trilling et al., 2016). Likewise, studies often yield a mixed support for the role of emotional and arousing contents (e.g., Berger, 2011; Trilling et al., 2016). To answer this question, we make use of the useNews dataset (Haim and Puschmann 2020) that includes 2.99 million news articles from 12 countries and 9 languages, as well as engagement metrics and meta data of 4 million Facebook posts referencing these news articles collected between 2018 and 2020.

18A Diachronic Discourse Analysis Of English Media's Understanding And Cognition Of The Image Of The Asian Games In China: A Corpus-based Study On Sentiment Analysis And Topic Modeling Of Media Public Opinion

By

In this study, a corpus of the 1990, 2010, and 2023 Asian Games was constructed, Critical Discourse Analysis was adopted, and Sentiment Analysis and Topic Modeling were used to analyze the English media's emotional tendencies towards the Asian Games in China and explore their main focuses. The study found that most media hold positive attitudes towards these Games with the proportion rising. Over the past three decades, China’s image in the media has gradually become diversified and multi-dimensioned, which has been enriched in terms of political concepts, cultural development, and economy. By analyzing the political aspects of the negative images and text mining, this study also found that the narrative mode and practice path of media sports coverage are based on political ideology and national interests, resulting in emotionally oriented reports intertwined with multiple issues, and the language content and its form has shifted from explicit to implicit.

19Towards An Understanding Of Differences In Online Hate Speech Perceptions Of Young Adult Social Media Users

By

On social media, users are exposed to online hate speech, which is a type of speech that attacks a person or a group based on, for instance, race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Not every user recognizes this type of speech, evaluates it as severe, and/or feels the need to intervene, which can lead to damaging consequences for those attacked. The project aims to understand perceptions of young adult social media users by looking at characteristics of online hate speech messages and personal and group-based user characteristics. Theoretical and practical implications for developing interventions to change perceptions will be formulated.

20Social Media And Rating Sites As Tools To Understanding Quality Of Care: A Scoping Review.

By

This article is from Journal of Medical Internet Research , volume 16 . Abstract Background: Insight into the quality of health care is important for any stakeholder including patients, professionals, and governments. In light of a patient-centered approach, it is essential to assess the quality of health care from a patient’s perspective, which is commonly done with surveys or focus groups. Unfortunately, these “traditional” methods have significant limitations that include social desirability bias, a time lag between experience and measurement, and difficulty reaching large groups of people. Information on social media could be of value to overcoming these limitations, since these new media are easy to use and are used by the majority of the population. Furthermore, an increasing number of people share health care experiences online or rate the quality of their health care provider on physician rating sites. The question is whether this information is relevant to determining or predicting the quality of health care. Objective: The goal of our research was to systematically analyze the relation between information shared on social media and quality of care. Methods: We performed a scoping review with the following goals: (1) to map the literature on the association between social media and quality of care, (2) to identify different mechanisms of this relationship, and (3) to determine a more detailed agenda for this relatively new research area. A recognized scoping review methodology was used. We developed a search strategy based on four themes: social media, patient experience, quality, and health care. Four online scientific databases were searched, articles were screened, and data extracted. Results related to the research question were described and categorized according to type of social media. Furthermore, national and international stakeholders were consulted throughout the study, to discuss and interpret results. Results: Twenty-nine articles were included, of which 21 were concerned with health care rating sites. Several studies indicate a relationship between information on social media and quality of health care. However, some drawbacks exist, especially regarding the use of rating sites. For example, since rating is anonymous, rating values are not risk adjusted and therefore vulnerable to fraud. Also, ratings are often based on only a few reviews and are predominantly positive. Furthermore, people providing feedback on health care via social media are presumably not always representative for the patient population. Conclusions: Social media and particularly rating sites are an interesting new source of information about quality of care from the patient’s perspective. This new source should be used to complement traditional methods, since measuring quality of care via social media has other, but not less serious, limitations. Future research should explore whether social media are suitable in practice for patients, health insurers, and governments to help them judge the quality performance of professionals and organizations.

21Analysis Of The Need For Padlet-Based Learning Media Development To Improve Understanding Of Concepts In Class XI Circular Motion Material At SMA Kota Bengkulu

By

An effective learning tool is one that can boost students' interest and motivation. Padlet is an easy-to-use, maintain, and set-up collaborative platform. This study set out to find out what educators and students needed in order to create lesson plans for high school students using the Padlet software. The methodology used in this study was qualitative descriptive. The data was gathered through observations, interviews, and literature research. This research instrument consists of these observation and interview sheets. The technique for data analysis is qualitative descriptive data analysis. The results of the learning materials, interviews, and observations that were done show that there is still space for development in the students' conceptual understanding, especially when it comes to the material on circular motion. because students still find it difficult to understand the material they are studying, and professors still use a traditional teaching methodology. Therefore, it can be said that Padlet-based development media are still needed at SMAN 1 Kota Bengkulu, SMAN 3 Kota Bengkulu, and SMAN 9 Kota Bengkulu in order to support students' learning and help them understand concepts. This is based on the needs analysis that was conducted at these schools.

25DTIC ADA388007: The Social Construction Of Breast Cancer In Mass Media And Its Influence On Public Understanding And Citizen Decision-Making

By

The purpose of this study is to assess the ways in which mass media play a significant role in constructing the public's understanding of breast cancer as a social problem, a disease, and personal illness experience. This third annual report contains results of three main parts of the investigation. First is a survey of print media depictions of breast cancer from 1986-1994. This period was marked by controversy about the efficacy of lumpectomy compared with mastectomy, the increasing visibility of well-known women with the disease, and shift of attention to topics in mainstream publications, such as environmental and genetic factors, as well as an increased critique of medical practices. Second is an examination of the decision whether to use the drug tamoxifen as prevention with healthy women, albeit at high risk for breast cancer, as depicted in popular print media from 1993-1999. This saga features the hope of scientific progress pitted against a critique of disease substitution and pharmaceutical profiteering. Third is an analysis of the quandary of decision making around the topic of genetic testing for BRCAl & BRCA2. Additionally, an unplanned research trajectory has been the connection between publicly communicated breast cancer narratives and the formation of health care policy.

26Understanding Citizen Reactions And Ebola-Related Information Propagation On Social Media

By

In severe outbreaks such as Ebola, bird flu and SARS, people share news, and their thoughts and responses regarding the outbreaks on social media. Understanding how people perceive the severe outbreaks, what their responses are, and what factors affect these responses become important. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study of understanding and mining the spread of Ebola-related information on social media. In particular, we (i) conduct a large-scale data-driven analysis of geotagged social media messages to understand citizen reactions regarding Ebola; (ii) build information propagation models which measure locality of information; and (iii) analyze spatial, temporal and social properties of Ebola-related information. Our work provides new insights into Ebola outbreak by understanding citizen reactions and topic-based information propagation, as well as providing a foundation for analysis and response of future public health crises.

34Understanding How Identity Leadership Promote Self-care Behaviour On Social Media.

By

Receiving appropriate mental health care is crucial, yet many individuals fail to seek necessary support. In Australia, between 2020 and 2022, only 45.1% of the 4.3 million people who experienced a mental disorder sought help from a healthcare professional (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2023). To resolve this, it is essential to promote help-seeking behaviours, defined as actions undertaken to address personal, psychological, emotional, or social support needs (Barker, 2007). These behaviours extend beyond seeking treatment for mental illness and also include proactive measures aimed at prevention, such as self-care behaviours. Here, social media emerges as a platform for promoting such behaviours. In recent years, social media has become a prevalent platform for health information, but concerns about content quality persist. For instance, a study found that 52% of TikTok videos about ADHD were misleading (Yeung et al., 2022). Given the reliance on social media for health information, promoting the influence of high-quality content on a group level is crucial. A relevant theory for understanding how and why such social media content is influential is the identity leadership theory. It suggests that effective leaders cultivate a collective identity among group members, influencing their behaviours. Research indicates that identity leadership strengthens group identification, leading to behaviours aligned with the group's identity (C. Haslam et al., 2016). Here, such behaviour can be self-care behaviour. Combining these concepts, social media influencers who act as identity leaders can shape self-care by fostering a shared identity with their audience. This study explores how identity leadership on social media can promote constructive self-care behaviours, addressing gaps in current understanding of promoting such behaviours.

The fight against misinformation and disinformation has developed substantially over the last decade, from the evolution of debiasing techniques (Lewandowsky, Ecker, Seifert, Schwarz & Cook, 2012) to the implementation of preventive interventions such as inoculation (McGuire, 1964; Roozenbeek, van der Linden, & Nygren, 2020) and news literacy (Vraga & Bode, 2020; Guess et al., 2020; Lutzke et al., 2019). At the same time, attention has shifted markedly towards the dissemination of false information on social media, resulting in the adaptation of these interventions to these rapidly changing environments. Examples of social media interventions include the use of warnings or flags for unverified or debunked information (Clayton et al., 2019), the wisdom of crowds (Allen, Arechar, Pennycook & Rand, 2020) and attention priming (Pennycook, Epstein, Mosleh, Arechar, Eckes & Rand, 2019). Recently, a new type of media literacy intervention, civic online reasoning (Wineburg & McGrew, 2017), has proven very effective in countering disinformation among high school and college students (McGrew, Breakstone, Ortega, Smith & Wineburg, 2018; McGrew, Smith, Breakstone, Ortega & Wineburg, 2019), as well as elderly citizens (Moore & Hancock, 2021). This intervention, based on learning professional fact-checking techniques, has the advantage that it can be used when misinformation is deceptively sophisticated or difficult to detect. Despite extensive study of civic online reasoning offline, there has been little application of these techniques on social media. The present study aims to adapt to social media some of the strategies of civic online reasoning, specifically lateral reading (leaving a website and opening of new tabs along a horizontal axis in order to use the resources of the Internet to learn more about a site and its claims) and click restraint (skipping the first search results of a browser search ). We test these strategies against scientific misinformation, which is a perfect testing ground for online interventions, as scientific content is often difficult for laypeople to access. As a complementary hypothesis, we test whether evaluation accuracy can be increased by giving participants monetary rewards for correct answers. This incentivized condition will serve as a benchmark for fact checking techniques. In addition, the incentives will allow us to test whether motivation and attention, triggered by the presence of an incentive, are sufficient to increase accurate responses. Participants are shown an interactive Facebook post, which links to an article presenting information related to science, and are asked to rate how scientifically valid the content of the post is. The scientific validity of the posts is determined through a predefined procedure based on a series of quality checks, such as whether the scientific claims have been peer-reviewed, whether the authors making the claim are competent on the specific topic, and whether the media reporting is faithful to the original article. The post will present a title in form of a scientific claim, and a caption from the article that elaborates on that claim. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three experimental conditions. In the control condition, participants observe and interact with the Facebook post, and are asked to rate the scientific validity of the post on a scale from 1 to 6. The monetary incentive condition is identical to the control condition, with the difference that participants are paid a fixed sum if their answer is correct. Finally, the pop-up condition is identical to the control condition, with the difference that before reading the post participants also observe a pop-up suggesting civic online reasoning strategies such as lateral reading and click restraint. At the end of the experiment, after the participants have completed a series of control questionnaires, we debrief them on the scientific validity of the post. In summary, the study tests whether fact checking techniques, as opposed to monetary incentives, are effective tools for understanding the scientific validity of social media content.

39Understanding The Social Factors Behind The Use Of Non-surgical Cosmetic Procedures Amongst Women: A Scoping Review And Media Analysis

By

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures can be characterized as treatments that alter a person’s appearance without surgically cutting into the skin to achieve results. Examples of these procedures include: botox, facial fillers, laser hair removal, skin lightening treatments, and chemical peels. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are increasing in popularity and contribute to the multi-billion dollar beauty industry. In addition, "influencer" culture on social media platforms, such as TikTok, have created a new way for these types of procedures to be marketed to even more potential consumers. Although non-surgical cosmetic procedures are often labeled as spa treatments or self-care, the purpose of these procedures is often to alter appearances to reflect current beauty standards, including reducing any signs of the natural aging process. This review and media analysis aims to explore the social factors that encourage women to seek non-surgical cosmetic procedures as more research is needed to understand the driving forces behind these decisions.

40Beyond Positive Partisanship: Understanding The Roles Of Negative Identity, Affect And Media Consumption In Individual Climate And Environmental Policy Preferences And Beliefs

By

For climate and environmental policies to succeed, public acceptance and support are key. Positive partisanship has been studied extensively in this context and existing literature seems to indicate its strong relationship with individuals’ attitudes towards such policies. In recent years, however, calls for a more nuanced understanding of political identity – including positive partisanship - have grown. Due to the politicised nature of climate change and the prominence of negative attitudes towards parties and politicians, negative partisanship and affect have received increased attention. This study intends to advance our understanding of the relationship between individuals and political parties by exploring how individuals’ identification with and affect towards parties might form barriers or opportunities to climate and environmental policy. Moreover, as previous research has identified a link between media coverage and the relationship between political parties and individuals’ opinions, individual media consumption will be explored. Using British Election Study and British Social Attitudes Survey data, quantitative analyses will be conducted to explore the association between positive partisanship, negative affect and individual climate and environmental policy preferences. Following a mediation model, the possible association between individual media consumption and climate and environmental policy preferences, via positive partisanship will be examined. This study will contribute to our theoretical understanding of negative partisanship as a political identity and its distinction from negative affect in individuals’ political decision making. Further implications of the results, for both theory and practice will be discussed and directions for future research will be given.

43Surviving In The Slums: Understanding The Difference Between Media Representation And The Personal Lived Experiences Of Tondo, Manila Residents

By

This paper delves into the media's depiction of poverty in Tondo Manila and how it influences public opinion and governmental measures taken to relieve urban poverty in the Philippines. Popular narratives often portray Tondo as an emblem of crime, homelessness and poverty In contrast to the locals' real experiences they often depict the locals This qualitative study uses methods such as theme analysis of interviews with Tondo residents and systematic content analysis of media sources. The results imply that the media tends to highlight the negative while ignoring the positive features such as community resilience agency and collective efforts. Public discourse and policy responses are impacted by this representation gap that can reinforce prejudices and impede the development of more complex and effective strategies to address urban poverty. The study highlights the significance of giving a platform to local voices in order to promote narratives that are more truthful and constructive. It should help us comprehend the social progress in the Philippines better.
