1Understanding Emotion Regulation Initiation In Negative Situations (Study 2)
By Katharine Greenaway, Elise Kalokerinos and Aya Uchida
The aim of this project is to investigate why people do not regulate their emotions. Emotion regulation broadly defined is a process of influencing your current feelings. Research shows the many reasons people have for choosing to regulate their emotions (Tamir, 2016). Research also shows that in daily life, we often do not regulate our emotions, even when we feel negative (Kalokerinos et al., in prep). Therefore, in this work, we want to know more about why people don’t regulate their emotions. This is to better understand how we can help people to initiate emotion regulation when it would be most helpful. In this study, we begin scoping bottom-up reasons why people choose not to regulate their emotions, taking the first step towards answering this question.
