Artificial intelligence researchers and cognitive scientists commonly believe that thinking involves manipulating representations. Thinking involves search, inference, and making choices. This is how we model reasoning and what goes on in the brain is similar. Winograd and Flores present a radically different view. They claim that our knowledge is not represented in the brain at all, but rather consists of an unformalized shared background, from which we articulate representations in order to cope with new situations. In contrast, computer programs contain only pre-selected objects and properties, and there is no basis for moving beyond this initial formalization when breakdown occurs. Winograd and Flores provide convincing arguments with examples familiar to most AI researchers. However, they significantly understate the role of representation in mediating intelligent behavior, specifically in the process of reflection, when representations are generated prior to physical action. Furthermore, they do not consider the practical benefits of expert systems and the extent of what can be accomplished. Nevertheless, the book is crisp and stimulating. It should make AI researchers more cautious about what they are doing, more aware of the nature of formalization, and more open to alternative views.

Although many view computers purely as technological tools to be utilized in the classroom and workplace, attention has been drawn to the social differences computers perpetuate, including those of race, class, and gender. This paper focuses on gender and computing by examining recent analyses in regards to content, form, and usage concerns. The content of educational software packages has been critically examined to reveal partiality in their design; this encompasses differences in software design, concern for race, socioeconomic class, and gender stereotypes in the overall text, and the lack of quality evaluation of educational software to identify gender bias. Other research is rooted in theory that microcomputers have been developed through mathematics and science, typically viewed as masculine fields; an inherent bias toward male-dominated thinking results. The question of who is using computers and how they are being used has raised the issue of access. In order to ensure equity in microcomputer use, all students must have equal opportunity to learn about and use computers. While it may be apparent how differences in socioeconomic class would allow for these discrepancies in access, issues of gender become noticeable upon examination when coupled with the fact that most computers were initially associated with mathematics and science departments. This has affected the way computing is taught, the location of computers, integration of computers into schools, and use of computers in schools. (Contains 20 references.) (AEF)

Summaries of four workshops sponsored by the Institute For The Future (IFF) are presented. Each focuses on a particular aspect of the social impact of computers: (1) computer models and simulations as aids to decision making; (2) the use of computers in financial operations; (3) perceptions, attitudes, and literacy regarding computers (i.e., knowledge about the capabilities and limitations of computers in meeting human needs); and (4) individual access to computers. Workshop participants and the IFF staff conclude that there is a need for the public to acquire a deeper understanding of how computers affect the decisions individuals and organizations make, the goods and services they produce, and the world that individuals perceive. It is also concluded that such improved understanding must be acquired in the near future. A program of education for the public is then proposed. (Author/DGC)

Another collection of mostly short “soliloquys” from Christopher Morley, an American literary luminary, who introduces them thus: “… these pieces were written, day by day, out of the pressure and hilarity and contention of the mind. I have made no attempt to conceal their ephemeral origin. They were almost all written for a newspaper, and contain many references to journalism. … it is remarkable that they should have been written at all: remarkable that any newspaper should take the pains to offer space to speculations of this sort. I have not scrupled, on occasion, to chaff some of the matters newspapers are supposed to hold sacred. … But a columnist … is only a deboshed Editorial Writer, a fallen angel abjected from the secure heaven of anonymity. … unsuspecting whether intended by his scheming employer as a decoy, or a doormat, or a gargoyle, or a lightning rod (how is he to know, never having been given instruction of any sort except to go ahead and write as he pleases?) … [T]he columnist pursues his task and gradually distils a philosophy of his own out of his duties. Oddly enough, instead of growing more cautious by reason of his exposure, he becomes almost dangerously candid. 21Where the Blue Begins

In his collection Plum Pudding, Christopher Morley included two pieces about an unprepossessing mutt named “Haphazard Gissing I” with a gift for mischief. In The Powder of Sympathy, that mutt appeared three times. In between those two collections, Morley made Gissing the hero of his own novel, in which he adopts three puppies, has several career changes, and goes hunting for the meaning of life (“where the blue begins”). “It was strange, since Gissing was so pleasantly situated in life, that he got into these curious adventures that I have to relate.
