In this project, we investigate brain inspired information processing for text image recognition and its performance/accuracy optimization. The intelligent text recognition system (ITRS) works robustly on images with low quality by using a combination of input image data preparation, pattern matching and statistical inference. Our experimental results show that, compared to Tesseract, the ITRS achieves comparable accuracy for clean input images and higher accuracy for camera images with occlusions. Performance enhancement techniques are developed to reduce the processing speed at different layers. In the pattern matching layer, the computing power of multicore processors is explored to reduce the processing time. In the word confabulation layer, new data structures are adopted for the storage of a dictionary, which increases memory locality and reduces search complexity. In the sentence confabulation layer, different sentence models are compared and the best model with the highest accuracy is identified. Finally, the overall ITRS is implemented on a heterogeneous high performance computing cluster. It provides users with the flexibility of computing resource management through a configuration file.

Cloud computing is an emerging model of business computing. Cloud computing is a service, which offers customers to work over the internet. It simply states that cloud computing means storing and accessing the data and programs over the internet rather than the computer's hard disk. The data can be anything such as music, files, images, documents, and many more. The user can access the data from anywhere just with the help of an internet connection. To access cloud computing, the user should register and provide with ID and password for security reasons. The speed of transfer depends on various factors such as internet speed, the capacity of the server, and many more. In this paper, we explore the understanding the determinates of security and privacy in cloud computing, Cloud Computing architecture and We also address the characteristics and applications of several popular cloud computing platforms. We identified several challenges from the cloud computing adoption perspective and we also highlighted the cloud interoperability issue that deserves substantial further research and development. The Image Understanding Architecture (IUA) effort is now entering a second phase. The IUA proof-of-concept prototype has been completed and our experience with both the hardware and extensive software simulations are guiding the development of a second generation of the IUA. Furthermore, the initial research-oriented software development environment is currently being replaced by a sophisticated set of application-oriented tools. Thus, the IUA effort is in the process of making the transition from an isolated research project to being in a position of accessibility to the wider community. This article describes the current status of the effort and some of our plans for the future. IUA development is taking place at three sites: the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, and Amerinex Artificial Intelligence Inc. The article is thus divided into major sections that describe the efforts taking place at each site.

The primary goal of the Image Understanding Architecture (IUA) project is to build a proof-of-concept prototype of a 1/64th slice of a next generation vision architecture, and develop the software support environment that will be needed to utilize the hardware. The second year of this program has focussed on extensions to the IUA software simulator programming environment, the development of library routines and demonstration software for the IUA, construction of the custom chips for the architecture, circuit board design, and the design and implementation of an integrated image understanding benchmark. This report presents the results of the IUA project for the second year of its original two-year contract period. The purpose of the IUA project is to design and construct a next generation parallel processor that specifically addresses the needs of real time computer vision applications. Included in this report is a summary of accomplishments during the second year, an overview of the IUA design, a description of the new DARPA Integrated IU Benchmark Exercise, a summary of the performance figures for the IUA on the exercise, and test reports and photos of chips developed through MOSIS under this program in an appendix.

The role of software ecosystems in the development and evolution of heterogeneously-licensed open architecture systems has received insufficient consideration. Such systems are composed of components potentially under two or more licenses, open source or proprietary or both, in an architecture in which evolution can occur by evolving existing components, replacing them, or refactoring. The software licenses of the components both facilitate and constrain the system's ecosystem and its evolution, and the licenses' rights and obligations are crucial in producing an acceptable system. Consequently, software component licenses and the architectural composition of a system determine the software ecosystem niche where a systems lies. Understanding and describing software ecosystem niches is a key contribution of this work. A case study of an open architecture software system that articulates different niches is employed to this end. We examine how the architecture and software component licenses of a composed system at design-time, build-time, and run-time help determine the system's software ecosystem niche and provide insight and guidance for identifying and selecting potential evolutionary paths of system, architecture, and niches.

This article is from Frontiers in Psychology , volume 5 . Abstract How do people make sense of the sequential images in visual narratives like comics? A growing literature of recent research has suggested that this comprehension involves the interaction of multiple systems: The creation of meaning across sequential images relies on a “narrative grammar” that packages conceptual information into categorical roles organized in hierarchic constituents. These images are encapsulated into panels arranged in the layout of a physical page. Finally, how panels frame information can impact both the narrative structure and page layout. Altogether, these systems operate in parallel to construct the Gestalt whole of comprehension of this visual language found in comics.

Based on the flexible path strategy and the desire of the international community, the lunar surface remains a destination for future human exploration. This paper explores options within the lunar system architecture design space, identifying performance requirements placed on the propulsive system that performs Earth departure within that architecture based on existing and/or near-term capabilities. The lander crew module and ascent stage propellant mass fraction are primary drivers for feasibility in multiple lander configurations. As the aggregation location moves further out of the lunar gravity well, the lunar lander is required to perform larger burns, increasing the sensitivity to these two factors. Adding an orbit transfer stage to a two-stage lunar lander and using a large storable stage for braking with a one-stage lunar lander enable higher aggregation locations than Low Lunar Orbit. Finally, while using larger vehicles enables a larger feasible design space, there are still feasible scenarios that use three launches of smaller vehicles.

This research focuses on continuing investigation and refinement of techniques for identifying and reducing the costs, streamlining the process, and improving the readiness of future workforce for the acquisition of complex software systems. Emphasis was directed at identifying, tracking, and analyzing software component costs and cost reduction opportunities within the acquisition life cycle of open architecture (OA) systems for Web-based and mobile devices, where such systems combine best-of-breed software components and software products lines (SPLs) that are subject to different IP license and cybersecurity requirements. The investigation focuses on four project work activities: Investigating the interactions between software system acquisition guidelines and processes, and the cost consequences of alternative software system architectures incorporating different mixes of OSS and CSS components subject to different licenses within secure OA SPLs [ScA08, ScA12b, ScA13a, ScA13b, ScA13c]. This entails exploring the balance between development, verification, and validation of software licenses and security rights, as well as the software component/license costs while managing the development and evolution of OA systems at design-time, build-time, and release and run-time. Developing formal foundations for establishing acquisition guidelines program managers can use in reduced cost acquisition of software-intensive systems that rely on development and deployment of secure OA systems using OSS and SPL technology and processes [AlS10, AlS13, ScA11, ScA12a, ScA12b, ScA13a, ScA13b, ScA13c]. The primary goal of this research was to complete the development and proof-of-concept prototype of a 1/64th slice of a parallel architecture to support image understanding, and to test and evaluate the architecture so the next generation Image Understanding Architecture (IUA) can be specified. The majority of the hardware effort has taken place at Hughes Research Laboratories, Malibu, California, although U Mass has principle responsibility for designing the IUA architecture and has undertaken some smaller portions of hardware development. The majority of the software effort took place at U Mass. Software efforts included development of a detailed software simulator for the IUA, a FORTH interpreter, and Apply and C compilers for the low-level processor of the IUA. Also developed were run-time support libraries, diagnostics, and vision algorithms. Some effort was spent implementing the ARPA IU Benchmark and evaluating the results of the exercise. Included in this report is a summary of accomplishments, an overview of the IUA design and the trade-offs addressed in its development, the design of the intermediate level interconnection network, the design of the IUA simulator and the ARPA benchmark.

Software architecture is receiving increasingly attention as a critical design level for software systems. As software architecture design resources (in the form of architectural descriptions) are going to be accumulated, the development of techniques and tools to support architectural understanding, testing, reengineering, maintaining, and reusing will become an important issue. In this paper we introduce a new dependence analysis technique, named architectural dependence analysis to support software architecture development. In contrast to traditional dependence analysis, architectural dependence analysis is designed to operate on an architectural description of a software system, rather than the source code of a conventional program. Architectural dependence analysis provides knowledge of dependences for the high-level architecture of a software system, rather than the low-level implementation details of a conventional program.

Thai mural paintings have played a significant role in Thai society since The Sukhothai Kingdom period (1238-1438 AD) until the present. Wattana Boonjub (2009) points out that Mural painting was used for teaching the Thai people in the past. Throughout history, temples have become a crucial part of Thai' lives; for example, Wat Phumin in Nan Province. Wat Phumin has exceptional architecture, beautiful visual presentations of Buddhist storytelling on the walls which depict scenes from the Buddhist Jataka tales, and scenes of everyday life in Nan. These unique characteristics have attracted many visitors to this temple over the years. Also, when those interested visit Wat Phumin, they experience this temple as a Museum. Loïc Tallon et al. (2008) suggests that the museum experience provides an appropriate situation for learning history in an unconventional setting. As a result, previous research titled "Visual Research Practices on Thai Lanna Mural Painting: A Case Study of Wat Phumin, Nan Province" was presented at The 4th International Conference for Asia Pacific Arts Studies (ICAPAS 2016). The results indicated that the information concerning the Lanna mural paintings inside the temples was overwhelming. However, no directions are facilitating Thai and foreign visitors in viewing and understanding at the first episode of storytelling on Lanna mural paintings inside Wat Phumin. Therefore, this research is the result of finding a solution to facilitating visitors in viewing Buddhist Jataka tales through digital arts and digital technology (such as responsive web design, QR codes, etc.) with practice-based design research.
