This paper describes a new methodology for the modeling and analysis of three-phase synchronous generators operating under an unbalanced regime. For this, an improved state model has been developed in order to determine significant signatures on stator and rotor electromagnetic quantities. This methodology is characterized by some advantages. Firstly, it can be generalized for the modeling of severe defects like open-phase and short circuits. Furthermore, by comparison to classical approaches based on the finite elements and symmetrical components methods, this approach gives a good compromise between precision and simulation time. The obtained results show the effectiveness of this approach for the analysis of unbalanced synchronous generators.

A key technical challenge for smart weapon developers is design of appropriate control mechanisms that provide sufficient control authority to enable correction of typical trajectory errors while not excessively burdening the overall weapon design. The work reported here considers a rotating mass unbalance control mechanism created by radial orientation of an internal part. To investigate the potential of this control mechanism, a seven degree-of-freedom flight dynamic model of a projectile equipped with an internal part is defined. Using this dynamic model, it is shown that by holding the internal part fixed with respect to a nonrolling reference frame, predictable trajectory changes are generated, including predictable impact point changes. As expected, when unbalance-offset distance or mass is increased, control authority increases proportionally. This control mechanism is capable of creating impact point changes that are the same order of magnitude as dispersion caused by errors induced at launch and in flight. To achieve this level of control authority, the projectile must be designed less stable than is typical of conventional uncontrolled fin and spin-stabilized projectiles.

This study comprises an analysis of the 2003 US led Iraq invasion from a civil-military relations perspective. It argues that many of the problems the United States encountered after early successes in Iraq stemmed from a dysfunctional interaction between civilian and military leaders. In particular, US failures in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion were largely due to the Bush administrations inability to comprehend the value of dissenting ideas and opposing views of thought emanating from within the military establishment. In making this argument, the thesis takes a contrasting view from the widely acclaimed civil-military theorist Eliot Cohen. In his seminal book Supreme Command, Cohen introduces the concept of unequal dialogue as the benchmark of effective civil-military relations during times of war. While referencing the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, Cohen claims Secretary Rumsfeld effectively utilized unequal dialogue and thus won his war. This thesis shows that Cohen was right about winning the tactical battle; however, Cohen was wrong about the US achieving strategic victory. In addition, Cohen was also wrong in his affirmation of the Bush administrations use of his own theory. The Bush administration only applied one-half of the theorys requirement, the statesmans right to probe into military operations. Secretary Rumsfelds inability to value the second part, the unequal dialogue itself, restricted his ability to maximize strategic decision-making. Because Cohens two part-theory is not mutually exclusive, utilizing one-half in isolation of the other, satisfices or limits, the policy makers success in strategy development. Ultimately, this thesis asserts that poor civil-military relations contributed to the demise of Iraq in the summer months of 2003.

The numerical model of Williams et al. (1992) is used to study frontogenesis from unbalanced initial conditions. The dependent variables are assumed to be independent of y. The hydrostatic Boussinesq primitive equations are used with no diffusion of heat or momentum. The model is bounded at the top and bottom by rigid planes. Periodic boundary conditions are used in the horizontal. The lateral boundaries are placed far enough from the imbalance region to avoid wave reflection. The atmosphere is assumed to have constant vertical temperature stratification. The initial imbalance is obtained by allowing a horizontal temperature gradient to exist while the initial wind is zero. In a stable stratified atmosphere, gravity waves are excited and propagate away from the imbalance region, provided no reflection occurs in the lateral boundaries. Therefore, the atmosphere tends toward a geostrophic balance away from vertical boundaries. Near these boundaries, the temperature gradient oscillates or it collapses into a front, depending on the initial Rossby (Ro) and Froude (F) numbers. A relationship between Ro and F is established which separates situations where a front may or may not form. Numerical solutions show the formation of a front within a finite period of time that tilts toward the cold air.

Unbalanced short-circuit faults on the alternator of the ERDA-NASA Mod-O100-kW experimental wind turbine are studied. For each case, complete solutions for armature, field, and damper-circuit currents; short-circuit torque; and open-phase voltage are derived directly by a mathematical analysis. Formulated results are tabulated. For the Mod-O wind turbine alternator, numerical calculations are given, and results are presented by graphs. Comparisons for significant points among the more important cases are summarized. For these cases the transients are found to be potentially severe. The effect of the alternator neutral-to-ground impedance is evaluated.

We construct new non-singular and time-dependent solutions from the black diholes with unbalanced magnetic charge. These solutions are constructed by the double Wick rotation with the analytic continuation of the mass or NUT-parameter of unbalanced black diholes. In the limit of balanced magnetic charge, our solutions reduce to the S-brane solution obtained from the black diholes discussed by Jones et al. . We study the behaviors of metric components and discuss the s-charge over a constant time-slice. From the properties of the solutions, we find that our solutions correspond to the S-brane type solutions.

This article is from Clinical Medicine. Pathology , volume 1 . Abstract Weight-losing diets have appealed to people who want to lose weight in the short-term. They usually apply high-protein (HP) diets (like Atkin’s, Stillman’s, Scarsdale) which they practice for 2 weeks or so. Unfortunately, these people who have rapid weight loss return to their old habits and quickly regain the weight lost. We have shown in previous work that actually these weight losses have been associated with body fluids, protein and glycogen storage. In our study, we examined the effect of unbalanced diet—related to an HP diet- on liver glycogen storage.For this study 40 Swiss albino mice consisting of two groups were used. The first group (HPSD) was fed with 25% HP for fifteen days and then were fed standard meals for the remaining 15 days; the other group was fed with standard meals throughout. The two groups were fed their respective diets for 30 days. At the end of 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th days 5 from each group were killed with cervical dislocation. The livers were removed perfused and then fixated.There were major differences in weight between the first and the fifteenth days. We detected remarkable increase in the weight gain of mice in the remaining 15 days. Glycogen storage was significantly reduced in HPSD (15) stained with PAS. In the others 20th, 25th and 30th days abnormally dense glycogen deposits were observed. Vacuoles in the hepatocyte cytoplasm, brownish deposits within hepatocytes, wide sinusoids, macrovesiculler steatosis structures and hydropic degeneration were observed in PAS and H&E stained HPSD group.As a result for the HPSD group a significant decrement in glycogen storage at the 15th day and also an accumulation of excessive amounts of glycogen deposits in mice liver was observed in the normal feeding phase.

Abstract Epistasis that may explain a large portion of the phenotypic variation for complex economic traits of animals has been ignored in many genetic association studies. A Baysian method was introduced to draw inferences about multilocus genotypic effects based on their marginal posterior distributions by a Gibbs sampler. A simulation study was conducted to provide statistical powers under various unbalanced designs by using this method. Data were simulated by combined designs of number of loci, within genotype variance, and sample size in unbalanced designs with or without null combined genotype cells. Mean empirical statistical power was estimated for testing posterior mean estimate of combined genotype effect. A practical example for obtaining empirical statistical power estimates with a given sample size was provided under unbalanced designs. The empirical statistical powers would be useful for determining an optimal design when interactive associations of multiple loci with complex phenotypes were examined.

Graph construction is a crucial step in spectral clustering (SC) and graph-based semi-supervised learning (SSL). Spectral methods applied on standard graphs such as full-RBF, $\epsilon$-graphs and $k$-NN graphs can lead to poor performance in the presence of proximal and unbalanced data. This is because spectral methods based on minimizing RatioCut or normalized cut on these graphs tend to put more importance on balancing cluster sizes over reducing cut values. We propose a novel graph construction technique and show that the RatioCut solution on this new graph is able to handle proximal and unbalanced data. Our method is based on adaptively modulating the neighborhood degrees in a $k$-NN graph, which tends to sparsify neighborhoods in low density regions. Our method adapts to data with varying levels of unbalancedness and can be naturally used for small cluster detection. We justify our ideas through limit cut analysis. Unsupervised and semi-supervised experiments on synthetic and real data sets demonstrate the superiority of our method.

The observation of neutrino oscillations requires new physics beyond the standard model (SM). A SM-like gauge theory with p lepton families can be extended by introducing q heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos but preserving its SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y gauge symmetry. The overall neutrino mass matrix M turns out to be a symmetric (p+q) x (p+q) matrix. Given p>q, the rank of M is in general equal to 2q, corresponding to 2q non-zero mass eigenvalues. The existence of (p-q) massless left-handed Majorana neutrinos is an exact consequence of the model, independent of the usual approximation made in deriving the Type-I seesaw relation between the effective p x p light Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_\nu and the q x q heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrix M_R. In other words, the numbers of massive left- and right-handed neutrinos are fairly matched. A good example to illustrate this seesaw fair play rule is the minimal seesaw model with p=3 and q=2, in which one massless neutrino sits on the unbalanced seesaw.

An unbalanced, sandwich composite structure consisting of TI 6AL-4V and GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skins with a phenolic honeycomb core is being considered for construction of a surface ship mast which will enclose critical shipboard equipment. Stability of the structure is one of the major concerns in the design process. This research focuses on analytical and experimental studies of an unbalanced composite sandwich beam subject to a compressive axial load. The limit load of each skin material separately, and two failure modes of the sandwich construction (general buckling and core shearing), are measured in the laboratory. An analytical model is developed for predicting the limit load of the unbalanced, sandwich composite configuration.

Letter Concerning Toleration by John Locke was originally published in 1689. Its initial publication was in Latin, though it was immediately translated into other languages. In this "letter" addressed to an anonymous "Honored Sir" (actually Locke's close friend Philip von Limborch, who published it without Locke's knowledge) Locke argues for a new understanding of the relationship between religion and government. One of the founders of Empiricism, Locke develops a philosophy that is contrary to the one expressed by Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan, primarily because it supports toleration for various Christian denominations. Locke's work appeared amidst a fear that Catholicism might be taking over England, and responds to the problem of religion and government by proposing toleration as the answer. Unlike Hobbes, who saw uniformity of religion as the key to a well-functioning civil society, Locke argues that more religious groups actually prevent civil unrest. Locke argues that civil unrest results from confrontations caused by any magistrate's attempt to prevent different religions from being practiced, rather than tolerating their proliferation. Locke's primary goal is to "distinguish exactly the business of civil government from that of religion." He makes use of extensive argument from analogy to accomplish his goal, and relies on several key points. The thing that he wants to persuade the reader of is that government is instituted to promote external interests, relating to life, liberty, and the general welfare, while the church exists to promote internal interests, i.e., salvation. The <em>Two Treatises of Civil Government</em> is a work of political philosophy published anonymously in 1689 by John Locke. The <em>First Treatise</em> is an extended attack on Sir Robert Filmer's <em>Patriarcha</em>, which argued for a divinely-ordained, hereditary, absolute monarchy. The more influential <em>Second Treatise</em> outlines a theory of civil society based on natural rights and contract theory. This hoax, subtitled “A Discovery that the Moon Has a Vast Population of Human Beings,” was originally serialized in 1835 in the <i>New York Sun</i> newspaper. It purported itself to be a true account that had been published in the <i>Edinburgh Journal of Science</i>. Sir John Herschel, a well-known astronomer at the time, was credited with authorship. <br><br> Herschel’s telescope, according to the story, was able to see man-bats and other animals, as well as a variety of geographical features, on the surface of the moon. The article was published at a time when newspapers were read as much for entertainment as for news.
