1Domain Structures In Ultrathin Magnetic Films

By

Domain structures appear in ultrathin magnetic films, if an easy-axis anisotropy, favouring the direction perpendicular to the film, overcomes the shape anisotropy. We will study the nature of the magnetic ground state and how the different parameters influence the domain structure. Both Ising and Heisenberg spins will be considered: in the latter case, a reorientation phase transition may take place. Domains are expected to appear just before such transition. Domain structures at finite temperature will be described in terms of a two dimensional array of domain walls, whose behaviour resembles a liquid crystal.

4Magnetic Phase Transitions In Ultrathin Films Of Different Crystal Structures

By

The properties of ultrathin films have been studied within the framework of Ising model and the method of random-field interactions. It is shown that the Curie temperature is inversely proportional to the number of layers. Critical exponent $\nu$ has been obtained and it is shown that it does not depend on the type of crystalline lattice.

5DTIC ADA277200: Correlations Between Micromagnetic, Microstructural And Microchemical Properties In Ultrathin Epitaxial Magnetic Structures

By

The proposed goal of this project is to obtain quantitative measurements of the microstructural, microchemical and micromagnetic properties of surfaces and interfaces of ultrathin films composed of magnetic materials deposited on non-magnetic, antiferromagnetic (metal) and insulating substrates. Surface microanalytic methods based on unique ultrahigh-vacuum scanning transmission electron microscope/scanning electron microscope (UHV-STEM/SEM) equipped with in-situ thin film preparation and characterization tools are being used. Magnetic characterization is performed in-situ using the surface magneto- optical Kerr effect (SMOKE). Additional magnetic microstructure measurements are being conducted in a novel STEM based electron holography system where absolutely calibrated nanometer resolution magnetometry is possible. Of the proposed systems for study outlined in the original proposal, work has begun on FE/Ag, Fe/Cu, Fe/CaF2 and Fe/CaF2/Si (half of the proposed systems)

9DTIC ADP014315: Role Of Spin Momentum Current In Magnetic Non-Local Damping Of Ultrathin Film Structures

By

Non-local clamping was investigated by Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) using ultrathin magnetic single and double layer structures prepared by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). The double layer structures show magnetic damping which is caused by spin transport across a normal metal spacer (N). In double layer structures a thin Fe layer, F1, was separated from a thick Fe layer, F2, by a Au(001) sparer. The interface magnetic anisotropies separated the FMR fields of F1 and F2 by a big margin allowing one to investigate FMR in F1 while F2 had a negligible angle of procession, and vice versa. The Fe films in magnetic double layers acquire non-local interface Gilbert damping. It will be shown that the precessing magnetic moments act as spin pumps and spin sinks. This concept was tested by investigating the FMR linewidth around an accidental crossover of the resonance fields for the layers F1 and F2. There is another possible mechanism for non-local damping which is based on a "breathing Fermi surface" of the spacer. The temperature dependence of the non-local damping indicates that this mechanism is weak in Au spacers. Surprisingly the Au spacer acts as an additional impedance for the spin pump mechanism. Finally it will be shown that electron-electron correlations in a Pd spacer can lead to a significant enhancement of the non-local damping.

1Letters to a Daughter

By

Book's cover

Letters to a Daughter is a collection of essays proffering ‘fatherly advice’ in the form of a one-sided correspondence. Each of these takes the form of a response to a question that a young woman who is about to enter adult society might pose. The fictional daughter in Letters to a Daughter is named ‘Alexa.’ The author, Hubert Bland, a columnist and political activist, dedicated the book to his daughter, Rosamund Edith Nesbit Bland.

While married to the author Edith Nesbit, Mr. Bland had a lifelong extramarital relationship with Alice Hoatson, the birth mother of Rosamund - Edith, Alice and Hubert lived together ‘openly’. Rosamund wrote The Man in the Stone House, a novel about a young woman’s relationship with her parents, and the children’s book Moo Cow Tales; she also wrote the children's book Cat Tales with her adoptive mother, Edith Nesbit - Summary by Brian Fullen

2Moo Cow Tales

By

Moo Cow Tales is a collection of four children's short stories written during the 1890's by young author Rosamund Edith Nesbit Bland. In 1904, Rosamund co-authored another book of children's stories, Cat Tales, with her adoptive mother, Edith Nesbit. Rosamund Edith Nesbit Bland also wrote the 1934 novel, The Man in the Stone House, about a young woman's relationship with her parents. Each story in Moo Cow Tale uses the literary device of personification. The book from which this recording is made has many fine illustrations by Evelyn Stuart Hardy (1866-1935), an artist whose work graced so many publications including children's books that featured pop-ups and moveable pictures.
