8Beyond The Meta-ecosystem? The Need For A Multi-faceted Approach To Climate Change Planning On Coastal Wetlands: An Example From South Uist, Scotland

By

Exposed, low-lying dune-wetland habitat complexes may have multi-faceted functionality that means they are effectively meta-ecosystems, where inter-acting nearshore, littoral, dune and freshwater components and processes must be considered together, sometimes in conjunction with interactions with contiguous inland habitats. The low-lying dune-machair-marsh-loch (lake) ecosystems of South Uist, Benbecula and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland exhibit such functionality, and investigation of a former loch basin at the south end of South Uist has revealed an unexpected level of complexity that also identifies a particularly high exposure to climate change in the coastal hinterland, particularly in terms of water relationships, though the possibility of significant change to the coastal frontage must also be considered in contingency planning. This investigation is described by sector, then drawn together in the context of climate change. It is suggested that the environmental setting of the Uists conforms to the concept of the meta-ecosystem in spatial terms, but with additional legacy and socio-economic components, so that there is effectively a socio-spatio-temporal meta-ecosystem. It is vital that this complexity is understood and accommodated in all flood contingency and adaptation planning, and the paper attempts to assist this by presenting an overview of the functional role and context of water in the coastal lowlands of the Uists.

16From Machair To Mountains - Archaeological Survey And Excavation In South Uist

South Uist in the Outer Hebrides has some of the best preserved archaeological remains within Britain and even further afield. Three distinct ecological zones - grassland machair plain, peaty blackland and mountains - each bear the imprint of human occupation over many millennia. The machair strip, long uninhabited, is filled with hundreds of settlement mounds, occupied from the Beaker period 4,000 years ago until a few centuries ago. The blacklands bear the traces of past farming practices as well as the remains of medieval settlements, more recent blackhouses and lochs containing duns, brochs and crannogs. In the hills lie the upstanding remains of shielings, Iron Age wheel houses and Neolithic chambered tombs.<br/>The results of large-scale excavations of Bronze Age houses (Cladh Hallan), an Iron Age broch (Dun Vulan), Viking settlements (Bornais and Cille Pheadair) and post-medieval blackhouses (Airigh Mhuillin), combined with extensive surveys and small-scale excavations that have identified hundreds of new sites, are being brought together in a series of volumes to provide an invaluable record and assessment of South Uist's archaeology covering the last 6,000 years. The large set-piece excavations are to be published in separate monographs. The results of the surveys and small-scale excavations are presented here.

33A Norse Farmstead In The Outer Hebrides - Excavations At Mound 3, Bornais, South Uist

This volume examines South Uist, a small island in the soutern half of the Outer Hebrides. In the middle of the island lies the township of Bornais. This covers a particularly flat area of land which means that the three mounds can be seen all the more clearly. These mounds have been identified as being from the Viking period, with evidence of pre-Viking habitation at the site coming from Iron Age sherds. The excavation of the Bornais settlement is a long-term project, which has been going since 1994. This first volume of results of the excavation focuses on Mound 3, but includes a discussion of the topographic and geophysical survey of all the mounds. There is also considerable analysis of the environmental remains and radiocarbon dating.

34A Late Iron Age Farmstead In The Outer Hebrides - Excavations At Mound 1, Bornais, South Uist

The settlement at Bornais consists of a complex of mounds which protrude from the relatively flat machair plain in the township of Bornais on the island of South Uist. This sandy plain has proved an attractive settlement from the Beaker period onwards; it appears to have been intensively occupied from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the Norse period. Mound 1 was the original location for settlement in this part of the machair plain; pre-Viking activity of some complexity is present and it is likely that the settlement activity started in the Middle Iron Age, if not earlier. The examination of the mound 1 deposits provides an important contribution to our understanding of the Iron Age sequence in the Atlantic province. The principal contribution comprises the large quantities of mammal, fish and bird bones, carbonised plant remains and pottery, which can be accurately dated to a fairly precise and narrow period in the 1st millennium AD. These are augmented by a substantial collection of small finds which included distinctive bone artefacts. The contextual significance of the site is based on the survival of floor deposits and a burnt-down roof; the floor deposits can be compared with abandonment and adjacent midden deposits providing contrasting contextual environments that help to clarify depositional processes. The burning down of the house and the excellent preservation of the deposits within it provide an unparalleled opportunity to examine the timber superstructure of the building and the layout of the material used by the inhabitants.
