This thesis examines the combat attrition of U.S. Army special operations forces (SOF). It develops a methodology for modeling SOF in Janus and calculating SOF attrition coefficients from high resolution combat model simulation results for use in Lanchester models of warfare. Selected missions involving SOF at the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) are examined and likely force-on-force engagements between SOF and enemy forces are modeled in Janus. A statistical analysis of the simulation results is conducted and SOF attrition coefficients are calculated using the maximum-likelihood estimate of attrition coefficients technique. SOF casualty outcome trees are then developed for the scenarios modeled. Casualty outcome trees capture the overall results of the high resolution combat model and provide a framework for utilizing the attrition coefficients developed in this study. SOF casualty outcome trees could also be incorporated into aggregate combat models that resolve attrition using Lanchester models of warfare.

Intense action packed US Special Forces helmet cam combat footage shows US Special Operations Forces In heavy combat during an assault on IS-K position In Afghanistan sometime within 2017. The soldiers are seen assaulting a IS-K held position in their armoured vehicles and on foot while being backed by heavy fire support from mortars and airstrikes obliterating any source of visible resistance. United States Army and Special Operations Forces (SOF) Recruiters in the U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) currently use four prospecting strategies to recruit Future Soldiers. These include telephone, referral, face-to-face, and internet or email prospecting. The four prospecting strategies have proven to be effective, but email prospecting continues to remain the most under utilized. Ironically, email prospecting is the most efficient strategy, yet most recruiters either refuse to try it or they use it incorrectly. This study will demonstrate that U.S. Army and SOF Recruiters can use email as a legitimate marketing tactic and powerful tool. The introduction will include the purpose of this study, background information that led me to this topic, and my hypothesis. The second chapter will discuss the four recruiting strategies that are being used by U.S. Army and SOF recruiters with a concentration on email prospecting. In the third chapter, I will conduct two case studies on organizations that successfully used email marketing to increase recruitment and improve sales. I will also conduct a case study on the Raleigh Recruiting Company and demonstrate how email marketing was used to increase recruitment during Fiscal Year (FY) 2006. The fourth chapter containing a model to demonstrate the efficiency of Email marketing/prospecting when compared to phone prospecting and I justify an estimated Return on Investment (ROE) if the Army were to outsource an Email Service Provider (ESP) to assist recruiters with their email prospecting efforts. The final portion of this chapter will determine whether or not USAREC is properly aligned to execute an effective email marketing campaign and I provide additional email marketing strategies that can be used by the Army and SOF. Chapter V concludes the study and contains references, and the distribution list.

This thesis examines the role of communist special operations forces during the Vietnam War and the relevancy of the lessons learned from these units. The United States military, specifically Army Special Forces, Rangers, and Navy SEALS, were not the only forces capable of conducting successful special operations during the conflict. The People's Army of Vietnam also had a highly organized, well trained, and well equipped organization capable of carrying out special operations. This organization was the sapper arm, and it was composed of three separate types of units. The Urban Sapper was concerned with intelligence gathering, terrorism, assassination, and special operations in the large urban areas such as Saigon and Hue. The Naval Sapper was responsible for attacking shipping, bridges, and bases located near waterways. The Field Sapper conducted operations against deployed US and South Vietnamese troops, trained other communist troops as sappers, and gave the communist leadership an elite force for lightning raids. The sapper force had certain operational principles, organizational constructs, and functional methods that set it apart from any other communist military element used during the Vietnam War.

The 9/11 Commission's recommendation that Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) paramilitary clandestine and covert operations should become the responsibility of the U.S. Special Operations Command has been included in both versions of House and Senate intelligence legislation. The expanded use of SOF in U.S. military operations raises several issues for Congress. The House and Senate Armed Services Committees in their reports on the FY2OO4 Defense Authorization Bill (H.R. 1588/S. 1050) included several provisions relating to U.S. SOF. Since the late 1980's soldiers holding the Civil Affairs (CA) specialty have been the most heavily mobilized and deployed element of the United States Army Reserve. This community currently supports operations in five different hazardous duty areas around the world and the current operations tempo does not appear to be abating any time soon. The Army has come to a strategic crossroad concerning one of its most utilized assets. The Army must decide how to support future operations when those service members who have been mobilized for the maximum time allowed by law are needed again. This paper will describe the CA mission its deployment history over the past 15 years and CA's current deployment. Additionally the current CA manpower crisis will be analyzed and recommendations offered for continuing support to military operations around the globe.

Special Operations Forces (SOF) play a significant role in U.S. military operations and, in recent years, have been given greater responsibility for planning and conducting worldwide counterterrorism operations. U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) has about 70,000 Active Duty, National Guard, and reserve personnel from all four services and Department of Defense (DOD) civilians assigned to its headquarters, its four Service component commands, and eight sub-unified commands. In 2013, based on a request from USSOCOM (with the concurrence of Geographic and Functional Combatant Commanders and the Military Service Chiefs and Secretaries), the Secretary of Defense assigned command of the Theater Special Operations Commands (TSOCs) to USSOCOM. USSOCOM now has the responsibility to organize, train, and equip TSOCs. While USSOCOM is now responsible for the organizing, training, and equipping of TSOCs, the Geographic Combatant Commands will continue to have operational control over the TSOCs. Because the TSOCs are now classified as sub-unified commands, the Services are responsible to provide non-SOF support to the TSOCs in the same manner in which they provide support to the Geographic Combatant Command headquarters.

Army Special Forces units are trained to conduct sensitive special operations including unconventional warfare, counterterrorism, direct action and strategic reconnaissance missions. Many of the unique skills and capabilities found in Special Forces units have potential applications to homeland security operations. Despite an absence of doctrine for domestic operations, Special Forces --especially Army National Guard Special Forces -- are likely to be employed in future homeland security operations. This thesis examines potential homeland security missions for Special Forces. Additionally, given the unique first-responder role of the National Guard, this thesis analyzes potential policy changes needed to enhance National Guard Special Forces contributions to homeland security. The absence of doctrine for domestic Special Forces operations potentially adversely impacts Army National Guard Special Forces. Given the unique constitutionally mandated nature of the National Guard, state governors have the ability to activate their forces, including Army National Guard Special Forces, for homeland security operations. The absence of doctrine for domestic Special Forces operations can potentially lead to the misuse, overuse or illegal use of these strategic assets. Enhancing the National Guard's capacity to correctly use Special Forces in domestic operations will enhance the country's overall security posture.

Special Operations Forces (SOF) play a significant role in U.S. military operations and the Administration has given U.S. SOF greater responsibility for planning and conducting worldwide counterterrorism operations. The 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) directs increases in SOF force structure, particularly in terms of increasing enabling units and rotary and fixed-wing SOF aviation assets and units. The USSOCOM Commander, Admiral Eric T. Olson, in commenting on the current state of the forces under his command noted that SOF forces are deployed to more than 75 countries and 86% of these forces are in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Admiral Olson also noted ongoing growth in SOF units and aviation assets and the effectiveness of Section 1208 authority, which provides funds for SOF to train and equip regular and irregular indigenous forces to conduct counterterrorism operations. USSOCOM?s FY2011 budget request for $9.8 billion has been recommended by the House and Senate Armed Services Committees for full funding, and both committees have also recommended additional funding for unfunded requirements.

U.S. Special Operations Forces (SOF) are experiencing their most extensive use and greatest transformation of the modern SOF era. In playing direct and leading roles in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as in the broader U.S. effort to defeat al Qaeda and violent extremism across the globe, these forces have become more operationally adept, endowed with more resources and organizational capacity, and are encountering greater demands for their leadership and expertise than ever before. SOF are in the midst of a resurgence, with their core capabilities aligning with the irregular and potentially catastrophic security threats of today's geostrategic environment.

The United States currently finds itself engaged in a prolonged conflict against global insurgency, commonly recognized as the Long War. Regrettably, many American leaders continue to misunderstand its nature, and consequently, they have arguably not applied the best methods to combat it. The U.S. military, in particular, has resisted reform to meet the demands of a war perpetuated by non-state actors due to its predisposition towards confronting and defeating other countries in conventional warfare. As a result, it has not employed its resources and personnel, particularly its Joint Special Operations Forces (JSOF), many of whom specialize in counter-insurgency warfare, in the most effective manner. United States Special Operations Command's (USSOCOM) similar fixation on strike warfare has come at the expense of fully developing and maintaining its unconventional capacity to carryout indirect approaches, which strive to undermine opponents through proxies. These indirect approaches have historically proven to be one of the most efficient means to defeat insurgencies. These unconventional skill sets are arguably the most distinguishing and ?special? characteristic of JSOF because they cannot be replicated by conventional forces. USSOCOM?s continued emphasis on strike warfare and ?hard? or ?warrior? skills, and its extolment of exceptional physical and mental toughness over ?soft? skills of persuasion and diplomacy, have resulted in a force that is more elite than genuinely special. Hence, USSOCOM currently selects, trains, and employs many personnel whose capabilities can only be differentiated from those of general-purpose forces by a matter of degree, not kind. Due to improved training and technology, general-purpose forces are capable of carrying out many of the direct missions that JSOF undertakes; consequently, the overall value of USSOCOM's participation in direct missions has diminished.
