Abstract Introduction: We describe and quantify the wide range of activities that a mature Medical Emergency Team can progressively perform. Methods: The activities performed by a Medical Emergency Team 20 years after its introduction were prospectively collected during 105 consecutive days. Results: The main activity was focused on the follow-up visits to previously treated critically ill patients (mean 7.5 visits/die in working days, 5.1 in the others). A large amount of other scheduled or unscheduled activities (like sedation or analgesia for diagnostic procedures, central venous line placement, phone consultation regarding critical care aspects of treatments) were performed: on average, 7.3 side-activities/die in working days and 5.2 in the others. First consultations in patients not previously seen were on average 3.1/die on working days, 2.4 in the others. Cardiac arrest accounted for 27 (9%) of first time visits. Conclusions: A Medical Emergency Team can progressively perform many kinds of activities. An evaluation limited to the reduction of in-hospital cardiac arrests or a too early assessment may underestimate its beneficial effects on the Hospital complexity.

This article is from Iranian Journal of Public Health , volume 39 . Abstract Background:: Oyan reservoir, South-West Nigeria was constructed in 1984 to generate electricity but has altered the existing physical, biological and socio-economic environment of the people. This study, carried out between October 2006 and March 2008, aimed at investigating the current status of Schistosoma haematobium infection around the reservoir. Methods:: Urine samples from 536 participants in five communities were examined for haematuria using reagent strips and S. haematobium ova was detected using sedimentation by gravity method. The participants were drawn from Abule Tuntun (n= 115), Ibaro (n= 156), Imala Odo (n= 88), Imala (n= 103) and Apojula (n= 74) communitie. Results:: Prevalence rates by haematuria were (Abule Tuntun- 33.04%; Ibaro- 73.07%; Imala odo- 60.22%; Imala- 7.77%; Apojula - 39.19%) and by presence of parasite ova were (Abule Tuntun- 39.13%; Ibaro- 83.97%; Imala Odo- 62.5%; Imala- 20.39%; Apojula- 54.05%). Conclusion:: S. haematobium transmission has been sustained in the reservoir since the outbreak was first reported in 1988. Mass treatment with praziquantel was conducted 8 years ago (2001) in two of the communities. However, the infection has persisted due to lack of pipe borne water and safe waste disposal system.

It has been twenty years since the soliton-action potential (AP) model was introduced, so an evaluation of this model and its status is presented.  It will be noted that there is, still, no compelling evidence for this model’s assumption that a major lipid phase transition occurs during APs.  Concerning the views of anaesthetic actions, changes in capacitance, alterations in membrane width and optical features during AP which the soliton-AP model presents, it is noted that alternative views account for these features in a manner consistent with the modern electrophysiological AP model.  It is also noted that the soliton-AP model’s proposed means to account for the electrical features of the AP has yet to be shown to operate.  Comments will be presented on the recent proposals that an AP has a wavelength, and for a new mechanical synapse hypothesis.  It will be suggested that claims for the soliton-AP model to be adiabatic, and for AP passage upon collision, may imply that this model violates the law of conservation of energy.  And the claim that APs do not generate net heat will be questioned and refuted by examination of published data.  Thus twenty years after its introduction, no clear support is found for the soliton-AP model.  Of concern is the apparent abandonment of the scientific method and its standards of evidence by some advocates of the soliton-AP model, as seen in the discounting of evidence judged to be inconsistent with their model.  Rather a metaphysical view is offered in which the soliton-AP model is argued to be valid based merely on its alleged association with certain principles and laws.  It is suggested that the scientific method’s approach of judging a model against data is the appropriate standard of evidence and should be used to evaluate the soliton-AP model.

First, we aim to offer a general introduction to the theme of Bose-Einstein condensates, and briefly discuss the evolution of a number of relevant research directions during the last two decades. Second, we introduce and present the articles that appear in this Special Volume of Romanian Reports in Physics celebrating the conclusion of the second decade since the experimental creation of Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms.

We first review the historical developments, both in physics and in mathematics, that preceded (and in some sense provided the background of) deformation quantization. Then we describe the birth of the latter theory and its evolution in the past twenty years, insisting on the main conceptual developments and keeping here as much as possible on the physical side. For the physical part the accent is put on its relations to, and relevance for, "conventional" physics. For the mathematical part we concentrate on the questions of existence and equivalence, including most recent developments for general Poisson manifolds; we touch also noncommutative geometry and index theorems, and relations with group theory, including quantum groups. An extensive (though very incomplete) bibliography is appended and includes background mathematical literature.

We studied patient long-term satisfaction after operation. We reviewed 122 patients, who were operated for dorsal (n=82) and volar (n=40) wrist ganglia 8 years before (range 3-11). Three radial arteries were injured during surgery for volar a ganglion. By the time of review 33 patients (27%) had a recurrence or had been re-operated. Radical surgery did not reduce the recurrence rate significantly. Reported general complaints from the wrist improved from a mean visual analogue scores (VAS, 0=best; 100= worst) of 56 before surgery to VAS 14 at review and unsightliness from VAS 50 to VAS 14. Patients were equally happy with transverse and longitudinal scars. Ten patients (8%) stated that they would not have consented to surgery if they had known the outcome in advance. We conclude that, in spite of a high recurrence rate, most patients are happy with the results of surgery.

In May 1954, the Supreme Court's decision in "Brown v. Board of Education" seemed a great, transforming event. In the spring of 1964 the achievement of school desegregation seemed almost as far off as ever. We asked ourselves: When will the law be enforced? But without a clear understanding of what the law was--and without a solid political coalition to rally behand a clear view of the law--enforcement and obedience could only become more problematic. For 10 long years the Supreme Court did not decide even one major case to define just what school "desegregation" meant. Between the years 1964 and 1974 the Supreme Court has spoken at last. Freedom-of-choice plans in the South have been swept aside, for example. And both busing and assignment on an explicitly integrative basis have been upheld as reasonable means to achieve that end. The present breakdown in enforcement and obdience to the law is tied--as it was in 1964--to a new and troubling uncertainty as to the substance of the law. What is uncertain is the extent of applicability of the principles originally set forth in "Brown v. Board of Education." It is our job to build the doctrine we once thought secure and to re-establish integration in our school as the basic goal. (Author/JM)

Among the report's findings are the following: school desegregation has progressed substantially in the South; progress in the North has been minimal; without positive action, segregation in urban areas (both North and South) appears likely to increase, and urban-suburban racial subdivisions will be intensified; most fears about school desegregation have proved groundless, and desegregation is working where it has been genuinely attempted; "freedom of choice" has proved a totally ineffective method of school desegregation; the federal government's commitment to desegregation must include the termination of federal assistance to school systems maintaining segregated schools; desegregation of dual school systems has often resulted in displacement or demotion of black school staff; and, there is evidence that disciplinary action against minority pupils in some desegregated schools has resulted in high numbers of expulsions and suspensions. The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to become a musketeer. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis -- inseparable friends who live by the motto, "One for all, and all for one".<br><br> The Three Musketeers was first published in serial form in the magazine Le Siècle between March and July 1844. Dumas claimed it was based on manuscripts he had discovered in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Edmond Dantès, a young seaman with a promising future, is arrested at his wedding ceremony under calomnious charges, and locked up in the Chateau d'If for 14 years. During this time, he secretly meets another detainee, l'Abbé Faria, an erudite believed to be insane, who becomes his friend and teacher, and who, upon his death, gives Edmond the secret to a hidden treasure.<br /><br />Dantès then manages to escape, almost drowning in the process, and is believed by all to be dead. If you have skipped the novels between The Three Musketeers and this, a few notes will bring you into the story:<br></br>On one side – Aramis, now a bishop and secretly the Captain-General of the Jesuit Order, who believes he has found a path to a higher honor – the papacy. Monsieur Fouquet, the vastly rich minister of finance, Aramis’ ally. Philippe, the identical twin of King Louis XIV, who grew up in ignorance of his pedigree, and whose surrogate parents were murdered on the king’s order and himself sent into the notorious Paris prison, the Bastille, there held in solitary confinement.<br></br>On the other side – King Louis XIV, selected as the twin who would be king by his mother, and who intends that his brother will never challenge him. Monsieur Colbert, first minister, who is jealous of Fouquet and plots his downfall.<br></br>Unaligned and in danger of collateral damage – d’Artagnan, now captain of the King’s Musketeers and so the king’s chief defender, who suspects plots running beneath the surface and who is trying to unearth them. The Black Tulip, written by Alexandre Dumas père and published in 1850, is a historical novel placed in the time of Tulipmania in the Netherlands. The novel begins with the 1672 politically motivated mob lynching of the de Witt brothers and then follows the story of Cornelius van Baerle, godson of Cornelius de Wit. Cornelius Van Baerle has joined the race to breed a truly black tulip – and to win the prize of 100,000 guilders, as well as fame and honour. As he nears his goal he is jailed and then of course rescued – by the beautiful Rosa, daughter of the jailer.
