An asymptotic approach for a Schroedinger type equation with non selfadjoint Hamiltonian of a special type in the case of two close degeneracy (turning) points is developed. Both real and complex degeneracy points are treated by a method of matched asymptotic expansions in the context of a unifying approach. An asymptotic expansion near degeneracy point containing the parabolic cylinder functions is constructed and the transition matrix connecting the coefficients of adiabatic modes in front of and behind the degeneracy point is derived. A simple non-technical recipe is also provided, which enables one to apply results to different physical problems without performing intermediate calculations.

Alcohol misuse is a major public health concern and falls into distinct development patterns throughout the lifespan (Meier et al., 2013; Jackson & Sartor). Prior investigations (Meier et al., 2013; Jackson & Sartor, 2016; Jackson et al., 2008) have identified four subtypes of alcohol use as: (a) a stable low drinker subtype, characterized by nondependence over time; (b) a developmentally limited subtype, characterized by decreasing use over time; (c )a late onset subtype, characterized by increasing use over time; and (d) a persistent subtype, characterized by stably high use over time. Key questions remain regarding the correlates of these patterns of alcohol use. One of these key questions is why some adolescents discontinue problematic drinking after young adulthood (i.e., a developmentally limited subtype) whereas others continue and experience chronic problems into later adulthood (i.e., a persistent subtype). Likewise, it is equally important to understand why some non-problem drinkers in adolescence go on to develop problems later in life, but others do not. To understand these key questions, a developmental perspective that considers age normative contexts (e.g., marriage, parenthood) may be useful. However, research to date has overlooked this perspective and instead has largely focused on alcohol-specific behaviors as impacting alcohol use trajectory patterns, without taking into account one’s environment and development as well (Windle, 2020; Zheng et al., 2019; Brunborg et al., 2018). Moreover, empirical work investigating childhood effects on later adult outcomes, in addition to investigating more developmentally proximal influences, such as young adulthood effects, on later adult outcomes is limited. Thus, this current study will broaden our understanding of alcohol use trajectories by incorporating salient developmental influences in young adulthood and its effect on later alcohol use. In addition, this study will incorporate early life experiences in adolescence as well as more proximal developmental experiences in young adulthood to comprehensively understand alcohol use patterns into early midlife. We hypothesize that developmentally-salient adult role transitional factors(e.g., romantic relationship involvement, parenthood, employment) are likely to be systematically related to alcohol use subtypes. This hypothesis is grounded in literature on turning points and on the circumstances that set into motion behavioral or psychological changes. The developmental period of young adulthood (i.e., ages 18 to 25) marks a peak of alcohol use as well as major role transitions such as parenthood, marriage and career establishment. Further, prior investigations have found turning points in young adulthood playing an important role in alcohol use. For example, in young adulthood being in a committed partnership (Barr et al., 2019), having a child (Little et al., 2009) and educational attainment (Bingham et al., 2005) are associated with reductions in alcohol use. A second key question that has received little attention in the empirical literature is whether and how alcohol subtypes are associated with health outcomes. Prior literature has found different subtypes are characterized by unique adult outcomes (Meirer et al., 2013; Maggs & Schulenberg, 2004). For example, across literature alcohol use patterns exhibited in the persistent subtype are characterized by the highest levels of risk for a host of poor health outcomes in adulthood, such as depression, anxiety disorders,substance use problems, eating changes and somatic symptoms . Further, in contrast to individuals falling under persistent subtype, individuals under the developmentally limited subtype exhibit a significant improvement of health outcomes into adulthood (Meirer et al., 2013). In other words, the developmentally limited subtype is characterized by a different pattern of outcomes in comparison to the persistent subtype exhibited in adulthood, where poor outcomes are illustrated in adolescence but improve across development. Based on prior research, four trajectory subtypes are hypothesized to be identified in growth mixture modeling (GMM) modeling. We will examine young adulthood transition factors among the four hypothesized alcohol subtypes. In addition, we will examine associations among alcohol subtypes identified in GMM analyses and subsequent health outcomes in early midlife. Investigating unique young adulthood transition factors within alcohol subtypes would contribute to our understanding of factors influencing the divergence of alcohol use patterns across development. Further, investigating associations between alcohol subtypes and health outcomes would provide insight into targeted prevention and intervention efforts. This article is from Frontiers in Pediatrics , volume 2 . Abstract Pyramidal neurons (PNs) represent the majority of neocortical cells and their involvement in cognitive functions is decisive. Therefore, they are the most obvious target of developmental disorders characterized by mental retardation. Genetic and non-genetic forms of intellectual disability share a few basic pathogenetic signatures that result in the anomalous function of PNs. Here, we review the key mechanisms impairing these neurons and their participation in the cortical network, with special focus on experimental models of fetal exposure to alcohol. Due to the heterogeneity of PNs, some alterations affect selectively a given cell population, which may also differ depending on the considered pathology. These specific features open new possibilities for the interpretation of cognitive defects observed in mental retardation syndromes, as well as for novel therapeutic interventions.

The chapters focus on key life course stages such as early child development, adolescence, emerging adulthood, parenting, marriage, relationships and ageing, as well as examining experiences and outcomes for selected social groups such as Indigenous children, migrants and refugees, and gay, lesbian and bisexual groups. The book presents evidence using high-quality and recent data. With a focus on Australia, the volume provides new insights into how context shapes life course pathways and outcomes and a contrast to work that typically focuses on Europe and the United States. It will be of value to anyone interested in understanding how family background and life course pathways influence social disadvantage.

Effects of various nuclear interaction potentials on the decay lifetimes and the turning points of the WKB action integral has been studied. The microscopic nuclear potential obtained by folding in the density distribution functions of the two clusters with a realistic effective interaction has also been used to calculate the turning points. Half lives of alpha and ^{20}O cluster emissions from ^{228}Th have been calculated within the superasymmetric fission model using various phenomenological and the microscopic double folding potentials. Calculations of half lives with the microscopic double folding potentials are found to be in good agreement with the observed experimental data. Present calculations put the superasymmetric fission model on a firm theoretical basis.

Complex trajectories for Hamiltonians of the form H=p^n+V(x) are studied. For n=2 time-reversal symmetry prevents trajectories from crossing. However, for n>2 trajectories may indeed cross, and as a result, the complex trajectories for such Hamiltonians have a rich and elaborate structure. In past work on complex classical trajectories it has been observed that turning points act as attractors; they pull on complex trajectories and make them veer towards the turning point. In this paper it is shown that the poles of V(x) have the opposite effect --- they deflect and repel trajectories. Moreover, poles shield and screen the effect of turning points.

Seventy-seven of the essays were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788 . A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist, was published in 1788 by J. and A. M’Lean. The Federalist Papers serve as a primary source for interpretation of the Constitution, as they outline the philosophy and motivation of the proposed system of government.The authors of the Federalist Papers wanted to both influence the vote in favor of ratification and shape future interpretations of the Constitution. In this biography for young adults, Mary A. Hamilton gives a British person’s perspective on the 16th President of the United States. A glowing tribute to “Honest Abe”, the author traces Lincoln’s ancestral roots and recounts his birth in Kentucky, his youth in Indiana, his adult life in Illinois and his years in the White House. She also provides a good background on the causes and course of the American Civil War. <BR><BR> Hamilton is not always historically precise. For example, she erroneously names Jefferson Davis as the Southern Democratic candidate for president running against Lincoln and Douglas in 1860 rather than John C. Breckinridge. However, overall “The Story of Abraham Lincoln” is a good summarization and interesting account of the life, values and politics of Lincoln. <BR><BR> Cautions: Chapter 7 contains a single use of an epithet for African-Americans in a quotation from a British magazine. Edmond Hamilton (1904 – 1977) had a career that began as a regular and frequent contributor to Weird Tales magazine. The first hardcover publication of Science Fiction stories was a Hamilton compilation, and he and E.E. “Doc” Smith are credited with the creation of the Space Opera type of story. He worked for DC Comics authoring many stories for their Superman and Batman characters. Hamilton was also married to fellow author Leigh Brackett. - Published in the May, 1962 issue of Amazing Stories “The Stars, My Brothers” gives us a re-animated astronaut plucked from a century in the past and presented with an alien world where the line between humans and animals is blurred. George Hamilton was the surgeon assigned to the frigate Pandora. The British Admiralty ordered the ship to the Pacific to arrest the Bounty mutineers and bring them back to England for trial. The commander, Captain Edward Edwards, also was ordered to chart the passage between Australia and New Guinea. While Edwards managed to arrest the mutineers still on Tahiti, he sank the Pandora on a reef near Australia. Hamilton tells this story and also the story of the crew's fate after the Pandora sank. “The Federalist Papers” are a collection of 85 linked essays that explain the construction of the U.S. government and why it was built that way. The Papers are regarded as the best pipeline into understanding the U.S. Constitution and the founding principles of the government it would establish. <br><br> I have endeavored here to present these essays, not as articles in a newspaper, but as you might have experienced them if you had sat in a comfortable tavern with a tankard in hand, and listened while these ardent men ranged in front of a friendly fireplace as they attempted to convince you of their arguments. <br><br> Following the Revolutionary War, the newly-independent United States of America were organized under the Articles of Confederation. This well-intentioned document was faulty to the purpose, and the new nation rapidly found itself in dire financial distress. <br><br> Consequently, in 1787 a Constitutional Convention was called to produce a new blueprint for the government. After completion, that plan was sent to the States in September of that year for ratification, but it immediately came under fire for the powers it granted to the central government. <br><br> In New York, views on either side were heated.
