4DTIC ADA199961: Carbon Monoxide And Turbulence-Chemistry Interactions: Blowoff And Extinction Of Turbulent Jet Diffusion Flames

By

Turbulence chemistry interactions have been studied experimentally and theoretically in the context of turbulent diffusion flames. The goal is a quantitative understanding of these interactions under a wide range of conditions. These range from low Reynolds number conditions ('weak' interactions, affecting primarily the levels of intermediate species, pollutants and combustion efficiency) to high Reynolds number conditions, where the flame can be extinguished by intense turbulent straining. Jet flames in coflowing air have been emphasized, with a coannular pilot burner used where necessary for stabilization at the burner lip. Fuels have consisted of carbon dioxide/H2 mixtures with the fraction of hydrogen successively reduced to promote extinction. Reynolds numbers have been increased to the point of blowoff. Major species and temperature have been measured by Raman scattering, and velocity and turbulence have been measured by laser velocimetry. These experiments have provided a comprehensive set of data on CO/H2 flames, extending to conditions conducive to localized extinction. The data show significant temperature decrements due to finite-rate chemistry but no evidence of localized extinction. Keywords: Turbulence, Chemistry interactions, Extinction, Turbulent diffusion flames, Superequilibrium, Laser diagnostics.

5DTIC ADA223296: Further Studies Of Turbulence Structure Resulting From Interactions Between Embedded Vortices And Wall Jets At High Blowing Ratios

By

Interactions of wall jets and vortices embedded in turbulent layers commonly occur near gas turbine blades and endwalls where film cooling is employed. These interactions frequently result in undesirable heat transfer effects at blade and endwall surfaces. In this thesis, a crossed hot-wire probe is used to measure the turbulence structure resulting from this type of interaction. The vortex is generated using a half delta-wing vortex generator mounted 12 deg with respect to a 10 m/s mean velocity flow over a flat plate. A single injection hole, 0.95 cm in diameter, inclined 30 deg to the horizontal, is positioned 59.3 cm downstream of the vortex generator. The vortex generator is positioned so that vortex upwash and downwash could be located over the injection hole. Streamwise development of the turbulent boundary layer was investigated for the following cases: (1) boundary layer with jet only (m = 1.5) , and (2) boundary layer with vortex only. Measurement of interaction between the boundary layer, vortex upwash, and the wall jet was made at one station with various blowing ratios. At low blowing ratios (m = 0.5 and 1.5) the vortex dominates the flow. Significant alterations to the turbulent structure are seen in the Reynolds stress components, vorticity distributions and mean velocities. At higher blowing ratios (m = 2.5 and 3.5) the jet dominates the flow, the vortex is blown away from the wall, and its turbulence effects are dispersed over a larger area. Theses. (edc)

6NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 20010049377: Analysis Of Aircraft, Radiosonde And Radar Observations In Cirrus Clouds Observed During FIRE II: The Interactions Between Environmental Structure, Turbulence And Cloud Microphysical Properties

By

Ways to determine the turbulence intensity and the horizontal variability in cirrus clouds have been investigated using FIRE-II aircraft, radiosonde and radar data. Higher turbulence intensities were found within some, but not all, of the neutrally stratified layers. It was also demonstrated that the stability of cirrus layers with high extinction values decrease in time, possibly as a result of radiative destabilization. However, these features could not be directly related to each other in any simple manner. A simple linear relationship was observed between the amount of horizontal variability in the ice water content and its average value. This was also true for the extinction and ice crystal number concentrations. A relationship was also suggested between the variability in cloud depth and the environmental stability across the depth of the cloud layer, which requires further investigation.

7NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19830017370: Turbulence And Wave Particle Interactions In Solar-terrestrial Plasmas

By

Theoretical modelling of two dimensional compressible convection in the Sun shows that convective flows can extend over many pressure scale heights without the nonlinear motions becoming supersonic, and that compressional work arising from pressure fluctuations can be comparable to that by buoyancy forces. These results are contrary to what was supposed in prevailing mixing length models for solar convection, and they imply a much greater degree of organized flow extending over the full depth of the convection zone. The nonlinear penetration of motions into the stable region below the convection zone was emphasized. These compressible flows are dominated by downward directed plumes in the unstable zone. Their strong penetration into the region of stable stratification below excites a broad spectrum of internal gravity waves there, and these in turn feed back upon the convection in the unstable zone to produce a rich time dependence.

8DTIC ADA114376: Electron Beam Transport In The Ionosphere - Energy Deposition And Optical Emissions Based Upon The Combined Effects Of Plasma Turbulence And Particle-Particle Interactions.

By

The problem of electron beam propagation in the E-region is examined. A model is developed to describe that part of beam spreading due to plasma turbulence. The basis of the model is that the given turbulence can cause a series of effective displacements delta r(GC) of the beam electron guiding centers through a corresponding series of briefly experienced perpendicular components of the turbulent electric field. Weak turbulence theory is considered and applied to cases of warm and cold beams. A Monte Carlo code has been developed to follow the spreading of the beam electron guiding centers where delta r(GC) is given altitude dependence. An analytic expression is used when delta r(gc) is constant with altitude. The turbulence model is used to examine beam spreading as observed by Davis et al. (1971) and Hallinan et al. (1978). We can generally account for the observed amount of spreading by adding in the contribution due to particle-particle interactions. Optical properties associated with beam energy deposition are also modeled. Most features in the UV and visible portion of the optical spectrum are considered along with their emission efficiencies.

10DTIC ADB231480: Energy Transfer And Triadic Interactions In Compressible Turbulence

By

Using a two-point closure theory, the Eddy Damped Quasi Normal Markovian (EDQNM) approximation, we have investigated the energy transfer process and triadic interactions of compressible turbulence. In order to analyze the compressible mode directly, the Helmholtz decomposition is used. The following issues were addressed: (1) What is the mechanism of energy exchange between the solenoidal and compressible modes, and (2) Is there an energy cascade in the compressible energy transfer process? It is concluded that the compressible energy is transferred locally from the solenoidal part to the compressible part. It is also found that there is an energy cascade of the compressible mode for high turbulent Mach number (Mt greater than or equal 0.5). Since we assume that the compressibility is weak, the magnitude of the compressible (radiative or cascade) transfer is much smaller than that of solenoidal cascade. These results are further confirmed by studying the triadic energy transfer function, the most fundamental building block of the energy transfer.

By

Activities in the following study areas are reported: (1) particle and wave processes in solar flares; (2) solar convection zone turbulence; and (3) solar radiation emission. To investigate the amplification of cyclotron maser radiation in solar flares, a radio frequency. (RF) heating model was developed for the corona surrounding the energy release site. Then nonlinear simulations of compressible convection display prominent penetration by plumes into regions of stable stratification at the base of the solar convection zone, leading to the excitation of internal gravity waves there. Lastly, linear saturation of electron-beam-driven Langmuir waves by ambient density fluctuations, nonlinear saturation by strong turbulence processes, and radiation emission mechanisms are examined. An additional section discusses solar magnetic fields and hydromagnetic waves in inhomogeneous media, and the effect of magnetic fields on stellar oscillation.

12DTIC ADA187505: Turbulence Interactions In Single- And Multi-Phase Turbulent Mixing And Combustion Processes.

By

Turbulent multiphase flows (particle-laden jets, particle-laden flows in ducts, sprays, etc.) have technical applications for the combustion processes of airbreathing propulsion systems, and solid and liquid rocket motors. This report describes an upgrade of a single channel laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) to provide critical measurements needed to gain a better understanding of this class of multiphase flows. The upgrade yields a system which can be configured in several ways: a phase-discriminating LDA which provides either two phase-velocity components at a single point, or phase velocities at two points which are independently transversable; and a phas-Doppler LDA which can provide two-component particle (or drop) size and velocity information at a single point. All systems can yield particle (or drop) number fluxes. The arrangement of these systems is described along with some representative results using the phase-discrimination configuration. Keywords: Dilute dispersed flows; Laser Doppler anemometry; Multiphase flow; Particle-laden jet flow.

14Anisotropic Fluxes And Nonlocal Interactions In MHD Turbulence

By

We investigate the locality or nonlocality of the energy transfer and of the spectral interactions involved in the cascade for decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows in the presence of a uniform magnetic field $\bf B$ at various intensities. The results are based on a detailed analysis of three-dimensional numerical flows at moderate Reynold numbers. The energy transfer functions, as well as the global and partial fluxes, are examined by means of different geometrical wavenumber shells. On the one hand, the transfer functions of the two conserved Els\"asser energies $E^+$ and $E^-$ are found local in both the directions parallel ($k_\|$-direction) and perpendicular ($k_\perp$-direction) to the magnetic guide-field, whatever the ${\bf B}$-strength. On the other hand, from the flux analysis, the interactions between the two counterpropagating Els\"asser waves become nonlocal. Indeed, as the ${\bf B}$-intensity is increased, local interactions are strongly decreased and the interactions with small $k_\|$ modes dominate the cascade. Most of the energy flux in the $k_\perp$-direction is due to modes in the plane at $k_\|=0$, while the weaker cascade in the $k_\|$-direction is due to the modes with $k_\|=1$. The stronger magnetized flows tends thus to get closer to the weak turbulence limit where the three-wave resonant interactions are dominating. Hence, the transition from the strong to the weak turbulence regime occurs by reducing the number of effective modes in the energy cascade.

15Shock Interactions, Turbulence, And The Origin Of The Stellar Mass Spectrum

By

Supersonic turbulence is an essential element in understanding how structure within interstellar gas is created and shaped. In the context of star formation, many computational studies show that the mass spectrum of density and velocity fluctuations within dense clouds, as well as the distribution of their angular momenta, trace their origin to the statistical and physical properties of gas that is lashed with shock waves. In this article, we review the observations, simulations, and theories of how turbulent-like processes can account for structures we see in molecular clouds. We then compare traditional ideas of supersonic turbulence with a simpler physical model involving the effects of multiple shock waves and their interaction in the interstellar medium. Planar intersecting shock waves produce dense filaments, and generate vortex sheets that are essential to create the broad range of density and velocity structure in clouds. As an example, the lower mass behaviour of the stellar initial mass function can be traced to the tendency of a collection of shock waves to build-up a log-normal density distribution (or column density). Vorticity - which is essential to produce velocity structure over a very broad range of length scales in shocked clouds - can also be generated by the passage of curved shocks or intersecting planar shocks through such media. Two major additional physical forces affect the structure of star forming gas - gravity and feedback processes from young stars. Both of these can produce power-law tails at the high mass end of the IMF.

16DTIC ADA390165: Dynamic DNS/LES Of Transition And Turbulence In High-Speed Flows And Flow-Structure Interactions

By

The purpose of this research is to develop a dynamic simulation approach to perform efficient large scale simulations of full aircraft configurations, with the capability of including six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DOF) corresponding to realistic aeroelastic motions. While there has been some progress in the aeroelastic problem in previous efforts, the flow component has been crudely modeled using either Euler inviscid description or the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations, both of which have proven to be inaccurate and thus inadequate for the Air Force needs. The emphasis of the completed work has been on capturing very accurately the vorticity generation process and the unsteady three-dimensional separation phenomena on the body by resolving all energetic flow scales in the near-wall and near-wake regions. Away from the body a subgrid model will be used to account for the reduced resolution. A new simulation paradigm has been developed for such flows employing the concept of dynamic simulation based on surgical p-refinement for transitional and turbulent flows at high speed, where significantly energetic flow scales are resolved dynamically as they are convected downstream or as new structures are generated and shed off from the body.

17NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19980039333: Studies Of Shock Wave Interactions With Homogeneous And Isotropic Turbulence

By

A nearly homogeneous nearly isotropic compressible turbulent flow interacting with a normal shock wave has been studied experimentally in a large shock tube facility. Spatial resolution of the order of 8 Kolmogorov viscous length scales was achieved in the measurements of turbulence. A variety of turbulence generating grids provide a wide range of turbulence scales. Integral length scales were found to substantially decrease through the interaction with the shock wave in all investigated cases with flow Mach numbers ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 and shock Mach numbers from 1.2 to 1.6. The outcome of the interaction depends strongly on the state of compressibility of the incoming turbulence. The length scales in the lateral direction are amplified at small Mach numbers and attenuated at large Mach numbers. Even at large Mach numbers amplification of lateral length scales has been observed in the case of fine grids. In addition to the interaction with the shock the present work has documented substantial compressibility effects in the incoming homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flow. The decay of Mach number fluctuations was found to follow a power law similar to that describing the decay of incompressible isotropic turbulence. It was found that the decay coefficient and the decay exponent decrease with increasing Mach number while the virtual origin increases with increasing Mach number. A mechanism possibly responsible for these effects appears to be the inherently low growth rate of compressible shear layers emanating from the cylindrical rods of the grid.

18Turbulence And Magnetic Field Amplification In Supernova Remnants: Interactions Between A Strong Shock Wave And Multi-Phase Interstellar Medium

By

We examine MHD simulations of the propagation of a strong shock wave through the interstellar two-phase medium composed of small-scale cloudlets and diffuse warm neutral medium in two-dimensional geometry. The pre-shock two-phase medium is provided as a natural consequence of the thermal instability that is expected to be ubiquitous in the interstellar medium. We show that the shock-compressed shell becomes turbulent owing to the preshock density inhomogeneity and magnetic field amplification takes place in the shell. The maximum field strength is determined by the condition that plasma beta ~ 1, which gives the field strength on the order of 1 mG in the case of shock velocity ~ 1,000 km/s. The strongly magnetized region shows filamentary and knot-like structures in two-dimensional simulations. The spatial scale of the regions with magnetic field of 1 mG in our simulation is roughly 0.05 pc which is comparable to the spatial scale of the X-ray hot spots recently discovered in supernova remnants where the magnetic field strength is indicated to be amplified up to the order of 1 mG. This result may also suggest that the turbulent region with locally strong magnetic field is expected to be spread out in the region with frequent supernova explosions, such as in the Galactic center and starburst galaxies.

By

A combined experimental and analytical program was conducted to examine the effects of inlet turbulence on airfoil heat transfer. The experimental portion of the study was conducted in a large-scale (approx 5X engine), ambient temperature, rotating turbine model configured in both single stage and stage-and-a-half arrangements. Heat transfer measurements were obtained using low-conductivity airfoils with miniature thermcouples welded to a thin, electrically heated surface skin. Heat transfer data were acquired for various combinations of low or high inlet turbulence intensity, flow coefficient, first-stator/rotor axial spacing, Reynolds number and relative circumferential position of the first and second stators. Aerodynamic measurements obtained as part of the program include distributions of the mean and fluctuating velocities at the turbine inlet and, for each airfoil row, midspan airfoil surface pressures and circumferential distributions of the downstream steady state pressures and fluctuating velocities. Analytical results include airfoil heat transfer predictions produced using existing 2-D boundary layer computation schemes and an examination of solutions of the unsteady boundary layer equations. The results are reported in four separate volumes, of which this is Volume 2: Heat Transfer Data Tabulation; 15 Percent Axial Spacing.

21DTIC ADA479627: Measurements Of Ocean Surface Turbulence And Wave-Turbulence Interactions (PREPRINT)

By

The uppermost layers of the ocean, along with the lower atmospheric boundary layer, play a crucial role in the air-sea fluxes of momentum, heat, and mass, thereby providing important boundary conditions for both the atmosphere and the oceans that control the evolution of weather and climate. In particular, the fluxes of heat and gas rely on exchange processes through the molecular layers, which are usually located within the viscous layer, which is in turn modulated by the waves and the turbulence at the free surface. The understanding of the multiple interactions between molecular layers, viscous layers, waves, and turbulence is therefore paramount to an adequate parameterization of these fluxes. In this paper, the authors present evidence of a clear coupling between the surface waves and the surface turbulence. When averaged over time scales longer than the wave period, this coupling yields a spatial relationship between surface temperature, divergence, and vorticity fields that is consistent with spatial patterns of Langmuir turbulence. The resulting surface velocity field is hyperbolic, suggesting that significant stretching takes place in the surface layers. On time scales for which the surface wave field is resolved, they show that the surface turbulence is modulated by the waves in a manner qualitatively consistent with rapid distortion theory.

22Further Studies Of Turbulence Structure Resulting From Interactions Between Embedded Vortices And Wall Jets At High Blowing Ratios

By

Interactions of wall jets and vortices embedded in turbulent layers commonly occur near gas turbine blades and endwalls where film cooling is employed. These interactions frequently result in undesirable heat transfer effects at blade and endwall surfaces. In this study, a crossed hot-wire probe is used to measure the turbulence structure resulting from this type of interaction. The vortex is generated using a half delta-wing vortex generator mounted at 12 degrees with respect to a 10 m/s mean velocity flow over a flat plate. A single injection hole, 0.95 cm in diameter, inclined 30 degrees to the horizontal, is positioned 59.3 cm downstream of the vortex generator. The vortex generator is positioned so that vortex upwash or downwash could be located over the injection hole. Streamwise development of the turbulent boundary layer was investigated for the following cases: (1) boundary layer with jet only (m = 1.5), and (2) boundary layer with vortex only.

23NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19910018914: Droplet-turbulence Interactions In Subcritical And Supercritical Evaporating Sprays

By

The objective of this research is to obtain an improved understanding of droplet turbulence interactions in vaporizing liquid sprays under conditions typical of those encountered in liquid fueled rocket engines. The interaction between liquid droplets and the surrounding turbulent gas flow affects droplet dispersion, droplet collisions, droplet vaporization and gas-phase, fuel-oxidant mixing, and therefore has a significant effect on the engine's combustion characteristics. An example of this is the role which droplet-turbulence interactions are believed to play in combustion instabilities. Despite their importance, droplet-turbulence interactions and their effect on liquid fueled rocket engine performance are not well understood. This is particularly true under supercritical conditions, where many conventional concepts, such as surface tension, no longer apply. Our limited understanding of droplet-turbulence interactions, under both subcritical conditions, represents a major limitation in our ability to design improved liquid previously unavailable information and valuable new insights which will directly impact the design of future liquid fueled rocket engines, as well as, allow for the development of significantly improved spray combustion models, making such models useful design tools.

24Cosmic Ray Transport In MHD Turbulence: Large And Small Scale Interactions

By

Cosmic ray (CR) transport and acceleration is essential for many astrophysical problems, e.g., CMB foreground, ionization of molecular clouds and all high energy phenomena. Recent advances in MHD turbulence call for revisions in the paradigm of cosmic ray transport. We use the models of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence that were tested in numerical simulation, in which turbulence is injected at large scale and cascades to to small scales. We shall address the issue of the transport of CRs, both parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field and show that the issue of cosmic ray subdiffusion is only important for restricted cases when the ambient turbulence is far from that suggested by numerical simulations. Moreover, on scales less than injection scale of turbulence, CRs's transport becomes super-diffusive. We also shall discuss the nonlinear growth of kinetic gyroresonance instability of cosmic rays induced by large scale compressible turbulence. This gyroresonance of cosmic rays on turbulence is demonstrated an important scattering mechanism in addition to direct interaction with the compressible turbulence. The feedback of the instability on large scale turbulence cannot be neglected, and should be included in future simulations.

25DTIC ADA186276: Carbon Monoxide And Turbulence-Chemistry Interactions: Blowoff And Extinction Of Turbulent Diffusion Flames.

By

The goal of this program is to understand turbulence chemistry interactions in combustion up to and including localized extinction. Experimentally, pilot stabilized non premixed turbulent jet flames of selected mixtures are being studied under conditions conducive to strain-induced local extinction. Laser based techniques such as Raman scattering and Rayleigh scattering are employed. Analytically, models based on the asymptotically thin flamelet concept and on distributed reaction zone concepts are being assessed. A significant finding is that the popular contemporary view of a turbulent flame as an ensemble of asymptotically thin flamelets seems incorrect. Alternative mechanisms based on thick flamelets are proposed. The results include: (1) A complete re evaluation of Raman data showing significant corrections due to high temperature effects. Keywords: Turbulence chemistry interactions, Extinction, Blowoff, turbulent diffusion flames, Superequilibrium, Laser diagnostics.

26DTIC AD1013108: Investigation Of Ionospheric Turbulence And Whistler Wave Interactions With Space Plasmas

By

We report on AFOSR-sponsored research titled Investigation of Ionospheric Turbulence and Whistler Wave Interactions with Space Plasmas(FA9550-09-1-0391 for the period of June 1, 2009 August 31, 2012). It includes two parts: (1) naturally occurring and radio wave-induced large-and medium-scale ionospheric turbulence, and (2) whistler wave-generated short-scale ionospheric turbulence. Two types of large- and medium-scale ionospheric turbulence are discussed separately, viz., (a) anomalous heat source-induced acoustic gravity waves (AGW), and (b)HF radio wave-excited large ionospheric ducts. Our whistler wave injection experiments have been conducted at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and Gakona, Alaska, using Naval 40.75 kHz transmitter (code-named NAU) and HAARP heater to generate VLF whistler waves, respectively. These experiments are aimed at the controlled study of whistler wave interactions with ionospheric plasma and inner (outer) radiation belts atL = 1.35 (4.6).

28DTIC ADA190606: Dense-Spray Structure And Phenomena. Part 1. Turbulence/Dispersed-Phase Interactions.

By

This report describes one aspect of an investigation of dense-spray processes: namely turbulence/dispersed-phase interactions. The work was divided into two phases: (1) measurements of particle-laden jets injected into a still liquid; and homogenous particle flows, consisting of particles falling in a still (in the mean) liquid bath. The structure of turbulent, dilute, particle-laden water jets, submerged in still water, was studied both experimentally and theoretically. Nonintrusive measurements were made of mean and fluctuating phase velocities and particle number fluxes. Analysis was used to help interpret the measurements, considering three limiting cases, as follows: (1) locally-homogenous flow, where relative velocities between the phases are ignored; (2) deterministic separated flow, where relative velocities are considered, but particle/turbulence interactions are ignored; and (3) stochastic separated flow, where both phenomena are considered using random-walk methods. The locally-homogenous flow approximation was more effective than for past work involving larger density ratios between the phases; nevertheless, stochastic analysis yielded best agreement with measurements. Effects of enhanced drag (due to high relative turbulent intensities of particle motion) and effects of particles on liquid turbulence properties (turbulence modulation), were observed. Several recent proposals for treating these phenomena were examined; however, none appears to be adequate for reliable general use.

Effects of enhanced drag (due to high relative turbulent intensities of particle motion) and effects of particles on liquid turbulence properties (turbulence modulation), were observed. Several recent proposals for treating these phenomena were examined; however, none appears to be adequate for reliable general use.

31DTIC ADA627247: Turbulence Fine Structure, Intermittency, And Large-Scale Interactions In The Stable Boundary Layer And Residual Layer: Correlative High-Resolution Measurements And Direct Numerical Simulations

By

The research employed stable boundary layer measurements using the DataHawk UAV and high-resolution direct numerical simulations (DNS) to examine the interactions and instabilities occurring in multi-scale flows that drive intermittent turbulence events in the stable atmosphere. Both measurements and the DNS revealed the occurrence and persistence of sheet-and-layer structures in the temperature and velocity fields that arise from, and drive, successive instabilities including Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHI), gravity wave breaking (GWB), and more general fluid intrusions. Comparisons of measurements and modeling revealed many similarities and enabled an interpretation of a number of features of the observed flows. Also examined using the DNS results was the relationship between the Thorpe scale and the Ozmidov scale in such multi-scale flows. This revealed that the assumption that the ratio of these scales is approximately constant employed by many researchers is violated strongly on a case-by-case basis and may only be approximate for long spatial and temporal averages over turbulence events.

32Quantifying Resonant And Near-resonant Interactions In Rotating Turbulence

By

Nonlinear triadic interactions are at the heart of our understanding of turbulence. In flows where waves are present modes must not only be in a triad to interact, but their frequencies must also satisfy an extra condition: the interactions that dominate the energy transfer are expected to be resonant. We derive equations that allow direct measurement of the actual degree of resonance of each triad in a turbulent flow. We then apply the method to the case of rotating turbulence, where eddies coexist with inertial waves. We show that for a range of wave numbers, resonant and near-resonant triads are dominant, the latter allowing a transfer of net energy towards two-dimensional modes that would be inaccessible otherwise. The results are in good agreement with approximations often done in theories of rotating turbulence, and with the mechanism of parametric instability proposed to explain the development of anisotropy in such flows. We also observe that, at least for the moderate Rossby numbers studied here, marginally near-resonant and non-resonant triads play a non-negligible role in the coupling of modes.

33DTIC ADA354835: Secondary Breakup And Turbulence Interactions Of Drops

By

Experimental studies of two types of drop/gas interactions that are important in the near injector, dense region of sprays were carried out, as follows: (1) secondary drop breakup, which tends to control transport processes in dense sprays; and (2) turbulence generation by rapidly moving drops in gas environments, which tends to control interphase turbulence production in dense sprays. The drop breakup measurements showed that breakup should be treated as a rate process rather than by jump conditions in some instances and provided data about the temporal properties of breakup in the important bag and shear breakup regimes. The turbulence generation measurements showed that homogeneous dispersed flows of drops (particles) in gases consist of particle wake disturbances embedded in relatively large interwake turbulence fields and provided data about the particle wake properties and the overall turbulence properties of these flows for various particle sizes and fluxes.

34DTIC ADA174951: Carbon Monoxide And Turbulence-Chemistry Interactions Measurements And Modeling Of Turbulent Jet Diffusion Flames.

By

Development of a fundamental understanding of turbulence-chemistry interactions remains one of the most important and challenging problems in turbulent reacting flows. This program couples laser based measurements and computer modeling of well-characterized laboratory-scale jet diffusion flames to study the effects of finite-rate chemistry and localized extinction in turbulent combustion. The long-range goal is to use this fundamental understanding for control of lean and high-altitude blow out in gas-turbine engines. The results of the first year of this program include: 1) improving the data base for CO/H2/N2 turbulent jet diffusion flames by analyzing direct measurements of CO2 concentrations from Strokes vibrational Raman intensities and by comparing two independent methods of determining temperatures from the Raman data; 2) testing of the stretched laminar flamelet concept in turbulent diffusion flames by comparison of instantaneous and conditionally averaged Raman measurements in turbulent H2 and CO/H2/N2 jet diffusion flame calculations and measurements; and 3) testing of a diffusion flame pilot for stabilization of turbulent jet flames at high Reynolds number.

35NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19880014572: The Effects Of Inlet Turbulence And Rotor/stator Interactions On The Aerodynamics And Heat Transfer Of A Large-scale Rotating Turbine Model. Part 4: Aerodynamic Data Tabulation

By

A combined experimental and analytical program was conducted to examine the effects of inlet turbulence and airfoil heat transfer. The experimental portion of the study was conducted in a large-scale (approx. 5X engine), ambient temperature, rotating turbine model configured in both single-stage and stage-and-a-half arrangements. Heat transfer measurements were obtained using low-conductivity airfoils with miniature thermocouples welded to a thin, electrically heated surface skin. Heat transfer data were acquired for various combinations of low or high inlet turbulence intensity, flow coefficient, first stator-rotor axial spacing, Reynolds number and relative circumferential position of the first and second stators. Aerodynamic measurements obtained include distributions of the mean and fluctuating velocities at the turbine inlet and, for each airfoil row, midspan airfoil surface pressures and circumferential distributions of the downstream steady state pressures and fluctuating velocities. Results include airfoil heat transfer predictions produced using existing 2-D boundary layer computation schemes and an examination of solutions of the unsteady boundary layer equations.

36Mean Motion Resonances In Extrasolar Planetary Systems With Turbulence, Interactions, And Damping

By

This paper continues previous work on the effects of turbulence on mean motion resonances in extrasolar planetary systems. Turbulence is expected to arise in the disks that form planets, and these fluctuations act to compromise resonant configurations. This paper extends previous work by considering how interactions between the planets and possible damping effects imposed by the disk affect the outcomes. These physical processes are studied using three approaches: numerical integrations of the 3-body problem with additional forcing due to turbulence, model equations that reduce the problem to stochastically driven oscillators, and Fokker-Planck equations that describe the time evolution of an ensemble of systems. With this combined approach, we elucidate the physics of how turbulence can remove extrasolar planetary systems from mean motion resonance. As expected, systems with sufficiently large damping (dissipation) can maintain resonance, in spite of turbulent forcing. In the absence of strong damping, ensembles of these systems exhibit two regimes of behavior, where the fraction of the bound states decreases as a power-law or as an exponential. Both types of behavior can be understood through the model developed herein. For systems with weak interactions between planets, the model reduces to a stochastic pendulum, and the fraction of bound states decreases as a power-law. For highly interactive systems, the dynamics are more complicated and the fraction of bound states decreases exponentially. We show how planetary interactions lead to drift terms in the Fokker-Planck equation and account for this exponential behavior. In addition to clarifying the physical processes involved, this paper strengthens the finding that turbulence implies that mean motions resonances should be rare.

By

This project used a hierarchy of cloud resolving models to address the following science issues of relevance to CRYSTAL-FACE: What ice crystal nucleation mechanisms are active in the different types of cirrus clouds in the Florida area and how do these different nucleation processes influence the evolution of the cloud system and the upper tropospheric humidity? How does the feedback between supersaturation and nucleation impact the evolution of the cloud? What is the relative importance of the large-scale vertical motion and the turbulent motions in the evolution of the crystal size spectra? How does the size spectra impact the life-cycle of the cloud, stratospheric dehydration, and cloud radiative forcing? What is the nature of the turbulence and waves in the upper troposphere generated by precipitating deep convective cloud systems? How do cirrus microphysical and optical properties vary with the small-scale dynamics? How do turbulence and waves in the upper troposphere influence the cross-tropopause mixing and stratospheric and upper tropospheric humidity? The models used in this study were: 2-D hydrostatic model with explicit microphysics that can account for 30 size bins for both the droplet and crystal size spectra. Notably, a new ice crystal nucleation scheme has been incorporated into the model. Parcel model with explicit microphysics, for developing and evaluating microphysical parameterizations. Single column model for testing bulk microphysics parameterizations

It is argued that the low-Reynolds number results in the subject paper are not congruous with the data of Ling and Huang, and that the spectral transfer should be less local.

By

Research focused on the first two of the defined science goals related to characterization and understanding of turbulence sources, instability dynamics, and influences in multi-scale stable boundary layer (SBL) flows. During this time, we achieved major successes in both the numerical and the observational components of this study. The scientific motivations for our overall research program are described in Section 2. Sections 3 and 4 describe in greater detail the results obtained and their implications for SBL dynamics and further research foci.

41Helical Mode Interactions And Spectral Transfer Processes In Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

By

Spectral transfer processes in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence are investigated analytically by decomposition of the velocity and magnetic fields in Fourier space into helical modes. Steady solutions of the dynamical system which governs the evolution of the helical modes are determined, and a stability analysis of these solutions is carried out. The interpretation of the analysis is that unstable solutions lead to energy transfer between the interacting modes while stable solutions do not. From this, a dependence of possible interscale energy and helicity transfers on the helicities of the interacting modes is derived. As expected from the inverse cascade of magnetic helicity in 3D MHD turbulence, mode interactions with like helicities lead to transfer of energy and magnetic helicity to smaller wavenumbers. However, some interactions of modes with unlike helicities also contribute to an inverse energy transfer. As such, an inverse energy cascade for nonhelical magnetic fields is shown to be possible. Furthermore, it is found that high values of the cross-helicity may have an asymmetric effect on forward and reverse transfer of energy, where forward transfer is more quenched in regions of high cross-helicity than reverse transfer. This conforms with recent observations of solar wind turbulence. For specific helical interactions the relation to dynamo action is established.

42Interactions Of Vortices With Rarefaction Solitary Waves In A Bose-Einstein Condensate And Their Role In The Decay Of Superfluid Turbulence

By

There are several ways to create the vorticity-free solitary waves -- rarefaction pulses -- in condensates: by the process of strongly nonequilibrium condensate formation in a weakly interacting Bose gas, by creating local depletion of the condensate density by a laser beam, and by moving a small object with supercritical velocities. Perturbations created by such waves colliding with vortices are studied in the context of the Gross-Pitaevskii model. We find that the effect of the interactions consists of two competing mechanisms: the creation of vortex line as rarefaction waves acquire circulation in a vicinity of a vortex core and the loss of the vortex line to sound due to Kelvin waves that are generated on vortex lines by rarefaction pulses. When a vortex ring collides with a rarefaction wave, the ring either stabilises to a smaller ring after emitting sound through Kelvin wave radiation or the entire energy of the vortex ring is lost to sound if the radius of the ring is of the order of the healing length. We show that during the time evolution of a tangle of vortices, the interactions with rarefaction pulses provide an important dissipation mechanism enhancing the decay of superfluid turbulence.
