A simplified model for predicting pressure drop in fluid tuned isolator mounts was developed. The model is based on an exact solution to the Navier-Stokes equations and was made more general through the use of empirical coefficients. The values of these coefficients were determined by numerical simulation of the flow using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package FIDAP.

We have studied experimentally the magnetic field-induced superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition in one-dimensional arrays of small Josephson junctions. The zero bias resistance was found to display a drastic change upon application of a small magnetic field; this result was analyzed in context of the superfluid-insulator transition in one dimension. A scaling analysis suggests a power law dependence of the correlation length instead of an exponential one. The dynamical exponents $z$ were determined to be close to 1, and the correlation length critical exponents were also found to be about 0.3 and 0.6 in the two groups of measured samples.

The present controversy over the origin of glasslike thermal conductivity observed in certain crystalline materials is addressed by studies on single-crystal x-ray diffraction, thermal conductivity k(T) and specific heat Cp(T) of carrier-tuned Ba8Ga16X30 (X = Ge, Sn) clathrates. These crystals show radically different low-temperature k(T) behaviors depending on whether their charge carriers are electrons or holes, displaying the usual crystalline peak in the former case and an anomalous glasslike plateau in the latter. In contrast, Cp(T) above 4 K and the general structural properties are essentially insensitive to carrier tuning. We analyze these combined results within the framework of a Tunneling/Resonant/Rayleigh scatterings model, and conclude that the evolution from crystalline to glasslike k(T) is accompanied by an increase both in the effective density of tunnelling states and in the resonant scattering level, while neither one of these contributions can solely account for the observed changes in the full temperature range. This suggests that the most relevant factor which determines crystalline or glasslike behavior is the coupling strength between the guest vibrational modes and the frameworks with different charge carriers.

The Andreev reflection of the normal state-superconductor junction both in monolayer and bilayer graphene with a single magnetic barrier is investigated by means of the Green's function formalism. Within the tight-binding model, we study the direction-dependent Andreev reflection of two-dimensional graphene-superconductor junctions in the specular and retro-reflection regimes. The presence of a magnetic barrier close to the superconducting hybrid junction introduces a rich phenomenology. Such a barrier is capable of tuning the preferred angles of incidence for the Andreev reflection. In particular, it can enhance the specular reflection probability for certain angles of incidence in bilayer-based hybrid structures. When transmission is permitted, the Andreev reflection manifests itself in isolated peaks and asymmetric resonances associated with offsets and Fano-type oscillations in the transmission, respectively. Moreover, Fabry-P\'{e}rot oscillations in the Andreev reflection due to the interior scattering inside the magnetic barrier may appear. The impacts of magnetic barriers on the monolayer and bilayer hybrid interfaces are furthermore studied by calculating the differential conductances within the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk formula.

We report and analyze reversible magnetization measurements on a high quality MgB2 single crystal in the vicinity of the zero field transition temperature, T_c=38.83 K, at several magnetic fields up to 300 Oe, applied along the c-axis. Though MgB2 is a two gap superconductor our scaling analysis uncovers remarkable consistency with 3D-xy critical behavior, revealing that close to criticality the order parameter is a single complex scalar as in 4He. This opens up the window onto the exploration of the magnetic field induced finite size effect, whereupon the correlation length transverse to the applied magnetic field H_i applied along the i-axis cannot grow beyond the limiting magnetic length L_Hi, related to the average distance between vortex lines. We find unambiguous evidence for this finite size effect. It implies that in type II superconductors, such as MgB2, there is the 3D to 1D crossover line H_pi and xi denotes the critical amplitudes of the correlation lengths above and below T_c along the respective axis. We propose an efficient method to identify the degree of frustration in quasi-2D antiferromagnets described by the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model. The frustration ratio J_2/J_1 is usually obtained from analysis of susceptibility, specific heat and saturation field. We show that the non-monotonic field dependence of the staggered moment caused by the suppression of quantum fluctuations in a field depends strongly on the frustration ratio. This gives a powerful criterion to determine J_2/J_1 using a combination of exact diagonalization (ED) method for finite clusters and spin wave analysis. We apply this method to the quasi-2D compound Cu(pz)_2(ClO_4)_2 and show that it leads to an intermediate ratio J_2/J_1 ~ 0.2 for the frustration. We also explain the observed anomalous increase of transition temperature in applied fields as an effect of reduced quantum fluctuations.

BaPb$_{1-x}$Bi$_x$O$_3$ is found to exhibit a field-tuned superconductor to insulator transition for Bi compositions 0.24 $\leq x \leq$ 0.29. The magnetoresistance of optimally doped samples manifests a temperature-independent crossing point and scaling of the form $\rho(T,H)=\rho_c F(|H-H_{c}|T^{-1/z\nu})$, where $H_c$ is the field determined by the temperature-independent crossing point, and $z\nu$ = 0.69 $\pm$ 0.03. High resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal a complex intergrown nanostructure comprising tetragonal and orthorhombic polymorphs. Data are analyzed in terms of both a classical effective medium theory and a field-tuned quantum phase transition, neither of which provides a completely satisfactory explanation for this remarkable phenomenology.

We report the evolution of structural and magnetic properties in La2O3(Fe1-xMnx)2Se2. Heat capacity and bulk magnetization indicate an increased ferromagnetic component of the long-range magnetic order and possible increased degree of frustration. Atomic disorder on Fe(Mn) sites suppresses the temperature of the long-range order whereas intermediate alloys show a rich magnetic phase diagram.

We have studied the magnetic-field-tuned superconductivity destroying quantum transition in amorphous In-O films with the onset of superconductivity in zero field at about 2 K. At temperatures down to 30 mK the critical resistance R_c=R(T,B_c) has been found to change approximately linearly with temperature, which is in contradiction to a standard description where zero slope dR_c/dT = 0 is assumed near T=0. To make the data R(T,B) collapse in the vicinity of transition against scaling variable (B-B_c)/T^{1/y}, one has either to allow for the intrinsic temperature dependence of R_c or to postulate the critical field B_c to be temperature-dependent B_c(T)-B_c(0)~T^{1+1/y}. We find that the state on the high-field side of the transition can be both insulating and metallic and we determine the critical index y=1.2.

The Kondo lattice system CeZn_{0.66}Sb_{2} is studied by the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements at several pressures. At P=0 kbar, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic transitions appear at 3.6 and 0.8 K, respectively. The electrical resistivity at T_N dramatically changes from the Fisher-Langer type (ferromagnetic like) to the Suzaki-Mori type near 17 kbar, i.e., from a positive divergence to a negative divergence in the temperature derivative of the resistivity. The pressure-induced SM type anomaly, which shows thermal hysteresis, is easily suppressed by small magnetic field (1.9 kOe for 19.8 kbar), indicating a weakly first-order nature of the transition. By subtracting a low-pressure data set, we directly compare the resistivity anomaly with the SM theory without any assumption on backgrounds, where the negative divergence in d\rho/dT is ascribed to enhanced critical fluctuations in the presence of superzone gaps.

We report magneto-transport measurements on a superconducting molybdenum-germanium (MoGe) film of thickness $d$=50 nm in parallel magnetic fields and show evidence of a transition from a Meissner state to a resistive state of spontaneous perpendicular vortices generated by thermal fluctuations above a certain temperature $T>T_v(B)$. Here $T_v$ appears to match the vortex core explosion condition $d\approx 4.4\xi(T_v)$, where $\xi$ is the coherence length. For $T>T_v$, we observed that a nonlinear current-voltage ($IV$) response (Ohmic at low currents and the power law $V\propto I^\beta$ at higher $I$) is exponentially dependent on $B^2$. We propose a model in which the resistive state at $T>T_v$ is due to thermally-activated hopping of spontaneous perpendicular vortices tuned by the pairbreaking effect of the parallel $B$. keywords: vortex, vortices, fluxon, flux lattice, mixed state, lower critical field

Elemental chromium orders antiferromagnetically near room temperature, but the ordering temperature can be driven to zero by applying large pressures. We combine diamond anvil cell and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques to measure directly the spin and charge order in the pure metal at the approach to its quantum critical point. Both spin and charge order are suppressed exponentially with pressure, well beyond the region where disorder cuts off such a simple evolution, and they maintain a harmonic scaling relationship over decades in scattering intensity. By comparing the development of the order parameter with that of the magnetic wavevector, it is possible to ascribe the destruction of antiferromagnetism to the growth in electron kinetic energy relative to the underlying magnetic exchange interaction.

We report pressure tuned Raman and x-ray diffraction data of Bi1.98Sr2.06Y0.68Cu2O8 revealing a critical pressure at 21 GPa with anomalies in six physical quantities: electronic Raman background, electron-phonon coupling, spectral weight transfer from high to low frequency, density dependent behaviour of phonon and magnon frequencies, and a compressibility change in the c-axis. For the first time in a cuprate, mobile charge carriers, lattice, and magnetism all show anomalies at a distinct critical pressure in the same experimental setting. Furthermore, the Raman spectral changes are similar to that seen traversing the superconducting dome with doping, suggesting that the critical pressure at 21 GPa is related to the much discussed critical point at optimal doping.

A new kinetic instability which results in formation of charge density waves is proposed. The instability is of a purely classical nature. A spatial period of arising space-charge and field configuration is inversely proportional to electric field and can be tuned by applied voltage. The instability has no interpretation in the framework of traditional hydrodynamic approach, since it arises from modulation of an electron distribution function both in coordinate and energy spaces. The phenomenon can be observed in thin 2D nanostructures at relatively low electron density.

The behavior of some high temperature superconductors (HTSC) such as $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$ and $\rm Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+\delta}$, at very high magnetic field, is similar to that of thin films of amorphous InOx near the magnetic field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. Analyzing the InOx data at high fields in terms of persisting local pairing amplitude, we argue by analogy that local pairing amplitude also persists well into the dissipative state of the HTSCs, the regime commonly denoted as the "normal state" in very high magnetic field experiments.

The effects of pressure on a quantum spin liquid are investigated in an organic Mott insulator $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ with a spin-1/2 triangular lattice. The application of negative chemical pressure to $\kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, which is a well-known sister Mott insulator, allows for extensive tuning of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, with $J/k_{\rm B} = 175 - 310$ K, under hydrostatic pressure. Based on $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance measurements under pressure, we uncover universal scaling in the static and dynamic spin susceptibilities down to low temperatures $\sim 0.1k_{\rm B}T/J$. The persistent fluctuations and residual specific heat coefficient are consistent with the presence of gapless low-lying excitations. Our results thus demonstrate fundamental finite-temperature properties of quantum spin liquid in a wide parameter range.

We have observed multiple magnetic field driven superconductor to insulator transitions (SIT) in amorphous Bi films perforated with a nano-honeycomb (NHC) array of holes. The period of the magneto-resistance, H=H_M=h/2eS where S is the area of a unit cell of holes, indicates the field driven transitions are boson dominated. The field-dependent resistance follows R(T)=R_0(H)exp(T_0(H)/T) on both sides of the transition so that the evolution between these states is controlled by the vanishing of T_0 to0. We compare our results to the thickness driven transition in NHC films and the field driven transitions in unpatterned Bi films, other materials, and Josephson junction arrays. Our results suggest a structural source for similar behavior found in some materials and that despite the clear bosonic nature of the SITs, quasiparticle degrees of freedom likely also play an important part in the evolution of the SIT.

Considerations of the bad-metal behavior led to an early proposal for a quantum critical point under a P for As doping in the iron pnictides, which has since been experimentally observed. We study here an effective model for the isoelectronically tuned pnictides using a large-$N$ approach. The model contains antiferromagnetic and Ising-nematic order parameters appropriate for $J_1$-$J_2$ exchange-coupled local moments on an Fe square lattice, and a damping caused by coherent itinerant electrons. The zero-temperature magnetic and Ising transitions are concurrent and essentially continuous. The order-parameter jumps are very small, and are further reduced by the inter-plane coupling; quantum criticality hence occurs over a wide dynamical range. Our results provide the basis for further studies on the quantum critical properties in the P-doped iron arsenides.

By using a hydrostatic pressure, we have successfully tuned the ground state and superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 single crystals. It is found that, with the increase of pressure, the original superconducting phase with Tc about 3.5 K can be tuned to a state with lower Tc, and then a new superconducting phase with Tc about 6.5 K emerges. Accompanied by this crossover, the ground state is switched from a semiconducting state to a metallic one. Accordingly, the normal state resistivity also shows a nonmonotonic change with the external pressure. Furthermore, by applying a magnetic field, the new superconducting state under pressure with Tc about 6.5 K is suppressed, and the normal state reveals a weak semiconducting feature again. These results illustrate a non-trivial relationship between the normal state property and superconductivity in this newly discovered superconducting system.

We have studied the magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator quantum transition (SIT) in amorphous In-O films with different oxygen content and, hence, different electron density. While for states of the film near the zero-field SIT the two-dimensional scaling behaviour is confirmed, for deeper states in the superconducting phase the SIT scenario changes: in addition to the scaling function that describes the conductivity of fluctuation-induced Cooper pairs, there emerges a temperature-dependent contribution to the film resistance. This contribution can originate from the conductivity of normal electrons.

Femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy was used to systematically study photoexcited carrier relaxation dynamics in the intermediate-valence heavy fermion system Yb1-xLuxAl3 (0 < x < 1). Given the demonstrated sensitivity of this experimental technique to the presence of the low energy gaps in the charge excitation spectrum, the aim of this work was to study the effect of dilution of the Kondo lattice on its low energy electronic structure. The results imply that in Yb1-xLuxAl3 the hybridization gap, resulting from hybridization of local moments and conduction electrons, persists up to 30% doping. Interestingly, below some characteristic, doping dependent temperature T*(x) the relaxation time divergence, governed by the relaxation bottleneck due to the presence of the indirect hybridization gap, is truncated. This observation is attributed to the competing ballistic transport of hot electrons out of the probed volume at low temperatures. The derived theoretical model accounts for both the functional form of relaxation dynamics below T*(x), as well as the doping dependence of the low temperature relaxation rate in Yb1-xLuxAl3.

The mean free path of light ($l^*$) calculated for elastic scattering on a system of nanoparticles with spatially correlated disorder is found to have a minimum when the correlation length is of the order of the wavelength of light. For a typical choice of parameters for the scattering system, this minimum mean free path ($l^*_{min}$) turns out to satisfy the Ioffe-Regel criterion for wave localization, $l^*_{min} \sim \lambda$, over a range of the correlation length, defining thus a stop-band for light transmission. It also provides a semi-phenomenological explanation for several interesting findings reported recently on the transmission/ reflection and the trapping/storage of light in a magnetically tunable ferrofluidic system. The subtle effect of structural anisotropy, induced by the external magnetic field on the scattering by the medium, is briefly discussed in physical terms of the anisotropic Anderson localization.

The main properties and the type of the field-tuned quantum critical point in the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$ arisen upon applying magnetic fields $B$ are considered within the scenario based on the fermion condensation quantum phase transition. We analyze the behavior of the effective mass, resistivity, specific heat, charge and heat transport as functions of applied magnetic fields $B$ and show that in the Landau Fermi liquid regime these quantities demonstrate the critical behavior which is scaled by the critical behavior of the effective mass. We show that in the high-field non-Fermi liquid regime, the effective mass exhibits very specific behavior, $M^*\sim T^{-2/3}$, and the resistivity demonstrates the $T^{2/3}$ dependence. Finally, at elevated temperatures, it changes to $M^*\sim T^{-1/2}$, while the resistivity becomes linear in $T$. In zero magnetic field, the effective mass is controlled by temperature $T$, and the resistivity is also linear in $T$. The obtained results are in good agreement with recent experimental facts.

Abstract Insects have evolved physiological adaptations and behavioral strategies that allow them to cope with a broad spectrum of environmental challenges and contribute to their evolutionary success. Visual performance plays a key role in this success. Correlates between life style and eye organization have been reported in various insect species. Yet, if and how visual ecology translates effectively into different visual discrimination and learning capabilities has been less explored. Here we report results from optical and behavioral analyses performed in two sympatric ant species, Formica cunicularia and Camponotus aethiops. We show that the former are diurnal while the latter are cathemeral. Accordingly, F. cunicularia workers present compound eyes with higher resolution, while C. aethiops workers exhibit eyes with lower resolution but higher sensitivity. The discrimination and learning of visual stimuli differs significantly between these species in controlled dual-choice experiments: discrimination learning of small-field visual stimuli is achieved by F. cunicularia but not by C. aethiops, while both species master the discrimination of large-field visual stimuli. Our work thus provides a paradigmatic example about how timing of foraging activities and visual environment match the organization of compound eyes and visually-driven behavior. This correspondence underlines the relevance of an ecological/evolutionary framework for analyses in behavioral neuroscience.
