1The Ujamaa Hour S3E2 (Cooperative Study As A Pathway Towards Liberation) W/Joan Fadayiro

By

MOVEMENT MONDAY: Tune in on Monday (2/10) at 7:30 pm CST as we interview Joan R. Fadayiro of Cooperation For Liberation Study & Working Group. Otherwise known as Coop 4 Lib. Coop 4 Lib is a bi-weekly intentional gathering space where participants explore, enrich, and exchange insights on the historical and contemporary use of cooperative economic development strategies within Black communities towards the ultimate goal of developing a worker-owned cooperative enterprise in one of their target communities. Joan Fadayiro initiated a series of public forums exploring radical organizing strategies following the 2016 elections which served as a precursor to Coop 4 Lib in its current form. These forums led her to conclude that cooperative formations were one concrete process which could improve the material conditions within Black communities and cultivating study groups to explore these models would be a useful step forward. On this episode, we discuss what led Joan to launch those initial exploratory forums; what her life organizing around housing and other issues in Chicago have taught her community building; and peer into her vision of a future where cooperative economic models are more widely realized and deployed in Black communities. On the recap, we catch up on the current momentum towards timebanking as the Kola Nut Collaborative prepares the launch of several new presentations in February and March; catch up on what Coop 4 Lib has been studying in the month of January and its upcomong co-facilitated sessions; and touch upon why our Black History Month gatherings could use a more bold approach to envisioning the future. Tune in. Initially broadcast February 10, 2020 via Facebook Live to Kola Nut Collaborative at 7:30 pm

MOVEMENT MONDAY (on a Wednesday): Tune in on Wednesday (7/22) at 7:30 pm CST as we interview Elizabeth Carter formerly of Urban Cooperative Enterprise Legal Center and now in private practice supporting Black entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, cooperatives, and nonprofits by democratizing access to business capital. As founder and past Executive Director of Urban Cooperative Enterprise Legal Center, Elizabeth founded, presided over the Board of Directors, served as General Counsel, and lead its organizational and programmatic over the course of three years. Urban Cooperative Enterprise Legal Center is a nonprofit legal center whose mission is to create and support cooperative enterprises within marginalized communities through innovative mobilization efforts like the Street Team.
