Pain has been repeatedly associated with negative emotions such as anger and depression, with recent findings indicating that greater anger predicts increased pain intensity. Furthermore, there is evidence that difficulties in controlling one’s emotions are also associated with pain intensity. Taken together, these findings suggest that the way individuals experience and regulate their negative emotions may play an important part in their consequent pain intensity. Thus, the aim of the proposed study is to examine hypothesis that the association between negative emotions and pain is mediated by emotion regulation (ER). Additionally, we will test the role of the trait anger as a possible moderator of this association. Specifically, we propose that maladaptive ER would increase the negative association between negative emotions and pain intensity, while adaptive ER would decrease it. In addition, we propose that greater anger will be associated with increased negative associations between negative emotions and pain, and with maladaptive ER. Our sample will include approximately 250 chronic lower back pain patients.
