In this segment Les talks with historian Rick Britton about TODAY IN US HISTORY: Today, October 11th, is the 198th birthday of Sir George Williams, an English philanthropist who is little-known and yet he founded an organization that’s benefited millions around the world. Born on an English farm in 1821, Williams as a young man was a “careless, thoughtless, godless, [and] swearing . . . fellow.” He was apprenticed at a draper’s shop while still young, and in 1841 went to London to work in that trade (the making and selling cloth). Appalled by the terrible conditions in London for young working men, he gathered together a group of his fellow drapers to create a place that would not tempt young men into sin. Founded on June 6, 1844, that place was the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Since then it's become the largest youth charity in the world. In the beginning, the YMCA promoted Muscular Christianity, a mid-19th century English belief system characterized by discipline, patriotic duty, self-sacrifice, manliness, and the moral and physical beauty of athleticism. The movement came into vogue as a method of building character among the students in the English public-school system. Williams was knighted by Queen Victoria, and after his death in 1905 was commemorated at Westminster Abbey with a stained-glass window. THE LOCAL CONNECTION: Madison Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia—opened in 1905, directly across University Ave. from the Rotunda—was originally the home of the first campus-based YMCA in the United States. It was named after former president James Madison, the second rector of the University. Madison took over the position after Thomas Jefferson’s death in 1826. Transcript: Governor Christie: You know, I hear candidates for governor now saying that the problem is that New Jersey’s economy is not growing. Now listen, I was a candidate for governor once and I understand you say lots of things but someone has to be there as the referee to actually tell people what’s really happened. When I became governor, unemployment was nearly 10 percent, nearly 10 percent. Today, and it was higher than the national average, by the way, today, unemployment in New Jersey is 4.2 percent; below the national average of 4.5 percent. Today, in New Jersey, we have 4,331,300 people working. Why is that number important? That is the highest number of people employed in the state of New Jersey in the state’s history. So if the economy is not growing enough, yet we have more people working today than we’ve had in any time in our history- not the go-go 80s, not the tech bubble 90s, no right now, we have more people working than ever. Who is that a testimony to? Not me. It’s a testimony to Goya, it’s a testimony to LG Electronics, to Honeywell, to UPS, to Amazon, to Quick Chek, to Subaru, to Bass Pro Shops and to Hard Rock. All companies who have grown or arrived here in the last seven years to create private sector jobs and how many private sector jobs have we created? Over 306,000 new private sector jobs. So not only have we recovered all the jobs lost during the last administration, but we have another 56,000 more on top of that. And what happened to the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund? We advocated for and passed a constitutional amendment that said that governors and legislatures can no longer raid that fund for other purposes. You put the money in and employees put the money in and it should be there when the rainy day comes. So what’s happened? We repaid the federal government two years ahead of schedule because of our discipline and today we have a multi-billion dollar surplus in the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund and what did that allow us to do? Last year alone, we cut unemployment insurance taxes to business by $400 million. A $400 million tax cut for the businesses of this state for money they could put back in, reinvest in their businesses. # # #

TODAY IN U.S. HISTORY September 6 | Rick Britton In this segment, Les Sinclair talks with historian Rick Britton – TODAY IN US HISTORY: Today, September 6, marks the Marquis de Lafayette’s 262nd birthday. Born Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, he was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War, commanding American troops in several battles, including the Siege of Yorktown. After returning to France, he was a key figure in the French Revolution as well. Lafayette was born into a wealthy land-owning family and followed the family's tradition, becoming a commissioned officer at age 13. Convinced that the American Revolution was a noble cause, he traveled to America—against the orders of the French king—and was commissioned a major general by Congress at age 19 (thus becoming the youngest major general in American history). During the war, Lafayette returned home and successfully lobbied for more French support. In 1781, troops under his command in Virginia blocked forces led by Charles, Lord Cornwallis until other allied forces could position themselves for the decisive Siege of Yorktown. During the French Revolution, Lafayette, with Thomas Jefferson’s assistance, penned the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. AND THE LOCAL CONNECTION: In 1824, President James Monroe invited him to the United States as the nation's guest, and he visited all 24 states in the union. In the fall of 1824 Lafayette stayed at Monticello for 10 days. Newark, 3-24-2016.Transcript: Governor Christie: The results are undeniable, and I had a great question when I was in Newark a week or so ago from a member of the press who asked me, did I think this was coincidental, and I thought that’s just so typical of the kind of questions I get asked. When we were a full point or more higher than the national average, everyone said it was because our policies were failing. Now that we’re 6/10ths of a point below I have certain members of the media asking me if that’s coincidental. Well, if it wasn’t coincidental when we were a point or more higher, it certainly isn’t coincidental when we’re 6/10ths of a point lower. The fact is that this administration has over and over again said that taxes and regulation are the biggest impediment to New Jersey’s growth, so we’ve cut corporate taxes by $2.3 billion on businesses both large and small in New Jersey and those cuts have now been fully phased in. We killed the corporate business tax surcharge in 2010, which is a remnant of the Corzine administration. We cut regulation by one-third over where it was when I took office after Governor Corzine’s time. Under the leadership of Commissioner Wirths, we brought the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund back into solvency two years ahead of projections, and that saved businesses $213 million in taxes just in 2014 and another billion dollars over the succeeding five years, and that’s unemployment taxes that the businesses do not have to pay that they otherwise would have had to pay if we hadn’t done our job in the way we did it and the Commissioner deserves great credit for that, and the incentive programs now have over 192 projects approved for up to nearly $4 billion in incentives and over $4 ½ billion in resulting capital investment in our state, not to mention the employment that that’s created. On that employment, 22,000 new jobs are being created by those incentives. 15,000 additional construction jobs that are being created because of these incentives. There’s no doubt that New Jersey’s economy has turned around and is more vibrant, more active with more people employed than any time in our history. The unemployment rate is lower than it’s been at any time since 2007, nine years ago, and so it’s undeniable that New Jersey’s story is good, and what the Legislature needs to do now is open their ears and understand that it’s these policies that have created this growth and it’s beyond what’s happened in any other state in the region, and we need to do more. We need to reduce taxes more for the people and the businesses of this state. We need to reduce regulation more, and if we do we’re going to be in a situation where New Jersey can continue to thrive. We know this is a wonderful place to live. We know it is a great place to work, but we also know that over time misguided policies by the state has made it too expensive to live in, too expensive to work in. We need to continue to drive that down, and that’s why I’ve vetoed every tax increase that’s come to my desk in 6 ½ years as Governor and why I will veto every tax increase that comes to my desk that puts the people of New Jersey at a disadvantage and doesn’t represent tax fairness for the people of the state, so the proof is in the pudding everybody. A 4.3% unemployment rate. It was 9.8% when I took office in January of 2010, more than cut in half now, and as I said before, the real great news of today, more people employed in the state of New Jersey today than at any time in the state’s history. That’s economic success. All those, all those things are really good news. The best part of all this is the smiling faces of the employees that I saw when I walked in here. They love working here. They have a job that provides them with a good salary and good benefits, provides for their families, and allows them to feel really good about coming to work every day. Historian Rick Britton joins Les Sinclair to tell us about Today in Virginia history. On November 4, 1737, Willian Anne Keppel, second earl of Albemarle, was named governor of Virginia by King George II of England. Born in 1702, Keppel succeeded to his father's titles and estates in 1718 (at the age of 16). He had a distinguished military career, rising to the rank of lieutenant general. Prior to becoming governor of Virginia, Keppel served as ambassador to France and as member of the king's Privy Council. The earl of Albemarle never crossed the pond to actually visit Virginia, and his relationships with the lieutenant governors who actually governed the Old Dominion from Williamsburg were increasingly strained. This meant that Keppel was often inclined to outmaneuvered them in making colonial appointments; and this weakened imperial ties between England and Virginia, thus leading directly to revolution. Keppel did in Paris in 1754. Interestingly, the word "Albemarle" is an anglicized version of "Aumale," a place name in Normandy.
