Summoning the specters of musical forbears, and channeling the spirits of their successors, the 2008 New Music Seance Concerts featured a marathon of performances by pianist Sarah Cahill, and the dynamic violin/piano duo of Kate Stenberg and Eva-Maria Zimmermann. The concerts were held in the intimate, candle lit setting of the historic Arts & Crafts styled Swedenborgian Church in San Francisco on December 6, 2008. The first concert, entitled “Birds in Warped Time”, featured music by the pioneering American composers Percy Grainger and Steed Cowart; a host of women composers including Grażyna Bacewicz, Meredith Monk, and Lois V. Vierk; two Asian composers, Somei Satoh and Tan Dun; European masters of the avant-garde such as Per Nørgård, Luciano Berio, and Oliver Messiaen; and Dylan Mattingly a promising talent who has yet to reach his 20th birthday. We present a novel family of continuous linear time-frequency transforms adapted to a multitude of (nonlinear) frequency scales. Similar to classical time-frequency or time-scale representations, the representation coefficients are obtained as inner products with the elements of a continuously indexed family of time-frequency atoms. These atoms are obtained from a single prototype function, by means of modulation, translation and warping. By warping we refer to the process of nonlinear evaluation according to a bijective, increasing function, the warping function. Besides showing that the resulting integral transforms fulfill certain basic, but essential properties, such as continuity and invertibility, we will show that a large subclass of warping functions gives rise to families of generalized coorbit spaces, i.e. Banach spaces of functions whose representations possess a certain localization. Furthermore, we obtain sufficient conditions for subsampled warped time-frequency systems to form atomic decompositions and Banach frames. To this end, we extend results previously presented by Fornasier and Rauhut to a larger class of function systems via a simple, but crucial modification. The proposed method allows for great flexibility, but by choosing particular warping functions we also recover classical time-frequency representations, e.g. $F(t) = ct$ provides the short-time Fourier transform and $F(t)=\log_a(t)$ provides wavelet transforms. This is illustrated by a number of examples provided in the manuscript.

Time-dependent soliton solutions are explicitly derived in a five-dimensional theory endowed with one (warped) extra-dimension. Some of the obtained geometries, everywhere well defined and technically regular, smoothly interpolate between two five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-times for fixed value of the conformal time coordinate. Time dependent solutions containing both topological and non-topological sectors are also obtained. Supplementary degrees of freedom can be also included and, in this case, the resulting multi-soliton solutions may describe time-dependent kink-antikink systems.

The explicit coordinate transformations which show the equivalence between a four-dimensional spatially flat cosmology and an appropriate submanifold in the flat five-dimensional Minkowski space-time are presented. Analogous procedure is made for the case of five-dimensional warped brane world models. Several examples are presented.

House price increases have been steady over much of the last 40 years, but there have been occasional declines, most notably in the recent housing bust that started around 2007, on the heels of the preceding housing bubble. We introduce a novel growth model that is motivated by time-warping models in functional data analysis and includes a nonmonotone time-warping component that allows the inclusion and description of boom-bust cycles and facilitates insights into the dynamics of asset bubbles. The underlying idea is to model longitudinal growth trajectories for house prices and other phenomena, where temporal setbacks and deflation may be encountered, by decomposing such trajectories into two components. A first component corresponds to underlying steady growth driven by inflation that anchors the observed trajectories on a simple first order linear differential equation, while a second boom-bust component is implemented as time warping. Time warping is a commonly encountered phenomenon and reflects random variation along the time axis. Our approach to time warping is more general than previous approaches by admitting the inclusion of nonmonotone warping functions. The anchoring of the trajectories on an underlying linear dynamic system also makes the time-warping component identifiable and enables straightforward estimation procedures for all model components. The application to the dynamics of housing prices as observed for 19 metropolitan areas in the U.S. from December 1998 to July 2013 reveals that the time setbacks corresponding to nonmonotone time warping vary substantially across markets and we find indications that they are related to market-specific growth rates.

In this work the role of extra dimensions in the accelerated universe through the scenario of higher-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology has been studied. For this purpose, we first consider warped space-time in the standard flat brane scenario as the modified form of Robertson-Walker (RW) metric in five-dimension (5D) space-time and then the variation of the bulk scale factor (warp factor), with respect to both space-like and time-like extra dimensions is obtained. Finally, it is shown that both of two types of extra dimensions are important in this scenario and also the bulk scale factor plays two different roles.

The non-linear fluid dynamics of a warped accretion disc was investigated in an earlier paper by developing a theory of fully non-linear bending waves in a thin, viscous disc. That analysis is here extended to take proper account of thermal and radiative effects by solving an energy equation that includes viscous dissipation and radiative transport. The problem is reduced to simple one-dimensional evolutionary equations for mass and angular momentum, expressed in physical units and suitable for direct application. This result constitutes a logical generalization of the alpha theory of Shakura & Sunyaev to the case of a time-dependent warped accretion disc. The local thermal-viscous stability of such a disc is also investigated.

In this paper, we have studied a 5-dimensional warped product space-time with a time-dependent warp factor. This warp factor plays an important role in localizing matter to the 4-dimensional hypersurface constituting the observed universe and leads to a geometric interpretation of dynamical dark energy. The five-dimensional field equations are constructed and its solutions are obtained. The nature of modifications produced by this warp factor in the bulk geometry is discussed. The hypersurface is described by a flat FRW-type metric in the ordinary spatial dimension. It is found that the effective cosmological constant of the four-dimensional universe is a variable quantity monitored by the time-dependent warp factor. The universe is initially decelerated, but subsequently makes a transition to an accelerated phase at later times.

We present the explicit solution to the geodesic equations in a warped de Sitter space-time proposed by Randall-Sundrum. We find that a test particle moves in the bulk and is not restricted on a 3-brane (to be taken as our universe). On the 3-brane, the test particle moves with uniform velocity, giving the appearance that it is not subject to a force. But computing the particle's energy using the energy-momentum tensor yields a time-dependent energy that suggests a time-dependent mass. Thus, the extra force, which is the effect of the warped extra dimension on the particle's motion on the 3-brane, does not change the velocity but the mass of the particle. The particle's motion in the bulk also results in a time-dependent modification of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle as viewed on the 3-brane. These two results show that the classical physics along the extra dimension results in the time-dependence of particle masses and the uncertainty principle. If the particle masses are time-independent and the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is to remain unchanged, then there must be a non-gravitational force that will restrict all particles on the 3-brane. Finally, we just note that although classically, these time-dependent corrections on the 3-brane can be removed, quantum mechanical corrections along the extra dimension will restore back the problem.
