The aim of this study is to construct a prediction model for next day smoking relapse vulnerability (inferred by increases in smoking lapse risk factors) using machine learning algorithms applying objective and subjective sleep, and physical activity data collected pre and during cigarette abstinence as input features. The output of the model will be a prediction of relapse vulnerability.

Performance stability, as assessed by trial-to-trial variance in a choice reaction time (RT) task, was evaluated as a measure of stimulant effects on performance during sleep deprivation. Administration of methyiphenidate, pemoline, and a placebo be- gan 16 hr into a 64-hr sleep-deprivation protocol. Performance stability deteriorated significantly. especially during the circadian nadirs. In absolute terms, sleep depriva- tion increased trial-to-trial variance more than it increased the mean correct RT. In ad- dition, this measure demonstrated differing effects of the 2 drug regimens. Pemoline, at a dose of 37.5 mg every 12 hr, significantly reduced the overall average effeets of sleep loss on performance stability during the first 24 hr of drug administration. Pemoline also reduced circadian-related instability in performance throughout the study. Methylphenidate, at a dose of 10 mg every 6 hr, counteracted circadian-related instability in performance during the first 24-hr period of drug administration (1640 hr of sleep deprivation) but not during the second 24-hr period (4O%64 hr of sleep de- privation). Methylphenidate did not significantly affect the overall average effects of sleep loss on performance stability. Thus, trial-to-trial variance appears to be a valu- able measure for elucidating stimulant effects during sleep deprivation.

If so you are not alone. Ayurvedic medicine and the Ayurvedic clock has some guidelines that may be helpful for you. Ayurveda is a sacred system of science and philosophy that is designed to help you connect with the truth in your daily life. It is a holistic form of medicine based on a close relationship between yourself and your natural environment. It holds true that we are a microcosm of our larger macrocosm. When the five basic elements of nature, ether, air, fire, water and earth are in balance in us, we will experience harmony. At 6 pm in the evening we transition into kapha time. Kapha energy is slow, heavy, lethargic, and calm like earth. If we take advantage of that energy and enhance it, by keeping our lights dim and staying away from the lights of screens, we too can take on the qualities of earth, slow, heavy, calm and lethargic like earth. Kapha time transitions to pitta at around 10 pm. Pitta is the fire that transforms into energy, and so if you want a peaceful sleep, it is best to get to bed before 10 pm. Background: Sleep quality is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being, and excessive smartphone usage has been linked to poor sleep quality. However, the majority of studies on this topic rely on self-reported smartphone usage, which may not be accurate. By using objective measures of smartphone usage, such as screen time and app usage, we aim to investigate the relationship between smartphone usage and sleep quality more accurately. Objectives: The primary objective of this study is to determine if smartphone usage time, as measured by screen time and app usage, can predict sleep quality. We will also explore whether specific types of smartphone activities, such as social media usage, are more strongly associated with poor sleep quality. Additionally, we will investigate whether demographic factors such as age, gender, and employment status moderate the relationship between smartphone usage and sleep quality. Methods: This study will be a cross-sectional survey of adult smartphone users recruited from online platforms. Participants will complete a battery of questionnaires assessing smartphone usage time, sleep quality, and demographic information. Smartphone usage time will be assessed objectively using app usage and screen time data collected from participants' smartphones. Sleep quality will be measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We will use multiple regression analyses to investigate the relationship between smartphone usage time and sleep quality, controlling for demographic factors and other potential confounding variables. Expected outcomes: We expect to find that higher smartphone usage time, particularly social media usage, is associated with poorer sleep quality. We also anticipate that age and employment status will moderate the relationship between smartphone usage and sleep quality, with older individuals and those who are employed experiencing a stronger negative impact of smartphone usage on sleep quality. Our findings could have implications for interventions aimed at promoting healthy smartphone usage habits and improving sleep quality. Conclusion: This pre-registered study aims to investigate the relationship between smartphone usage time and sleep quality using objective measures of smartphone usage. The findings could have important implications for public health and inform interventions aimed at promoting healthy smartphone usage and improving sleep quality.

Background: A number of school systems worldwide have proposed and implemented later school start times as a means of avoiding the potentially negative impacts that early morning schedules can have on adolescent students. Even mild sleep deprivation has been associated with significant health and educational concerns: increased risk for accidents and injuries, impaired learning, aggression, memory loss, poor self-esteem, and changes in metabolism. Although researchers have begun to explore the effects of delayed school start time, no one has conducted a rigorous review of evidence to determine whether later school start times support adolescent health, education, and well-being. Objectives: We aimed to assess the effects of a later school start time for supporting health, education, and well-being in high school students. Secondary objectives were to explore possible differential effects of later school start times in student subgroups and in different types of schools; to identify implementation practices, contextual factors, and delivery modes associated with positive and negative effects of later start times; and to assess the effects of later school start times on the broader community (high school faculty and staff, neighborhood, and families). Search methods: We conducted the main search for this review on 28 October 2014 and updated it on 8 February 2016. We searched CENTRAL as well as 17 key electronic databases (including MEDLINE, Embase, ERIC, PsycINFO, and Sociological Abstracts), current editions of relevant journals and organizational websites, trial registries, and Google Scholar. Selection criteria: We included any randomized controlled trials, controlled before-and-after studies, and interrupted time series studies with sufficient data points that pertained to students aged 13 to 19 years and that compared different school start times. Studies that reported either primary outcomes of interest (academic outcomes, amount or quality of sleep, mental health indicators, attendance, or alertness) or secondary outcomes (health behaviors, health and safety indicators, social outcomes, family outcomes, school outcomes, or community outcomes) were eligible. Data collection and analysis: At least two review authors independently determined inclusion and exclusion decisions through screening titles, abstracts, and full-text reports. Two review authors independently extracted data for all eligible studies. We presented findings through a narrative synthesis across all studies. When two or more study samples provided sufficient information to permit effect size calculations, we conducted random-effects meta-analyses to synthesize effects across studies. Results: Our search located 17 eligible records reporting on 11 unique studies with 297,994 participants; the studies examined academic outcomes, amount and quality of sleep, mental health indicators, attendance, and student alertness. Overall, the quality of the body of evidence was very low, as we rated most studies as being at high or unclear risk of bias with respect to allocation, attrition, absence of randomization, and the collection of baseline data. Therefore, we cannot be confident about the effects of later school start times. Preliminary evidence from the included studies indicated a potential association between later school start times and academic and psychosocial outcomes, but quality and comparability of these data were low and often precluded quantitative synthesis. Four studies examined the association between later school start times and academic outcomes, reporting mixed results. Six studies examined effects on total amount of sleep and reported significant, positive relationships between later school start times and amount of sleep. One study provided information concerning mental health outcomes, reporting an association between decreased depressive symptoms and later school start times. There were mixed results for the association between later school start times and absenteeism. Three studies reported mixed results concerning the association between later school start times and student alertness. There was limited indication of potential adverse effects on logistics, as the qualitative portions of one study reported less interaction between parents and children, and another reported staffing and scheduling difficulties. Because of the insufficient evidence, we cannot draw firm conclusions concerning adverse effects at this time. This article is from Nature and Science of Sleep , volume 6 . Abstract There is increasing evidence that sleep promotes off-line enhancement of a variety of explicitly learned motor tasks in young adults. However, whether sleep promotes off-line consolidation of implicitly learned motor tasks is still under question. Furthermore, the role of sleep in promoting transfer of learning remains unknown. This study examined the role of sleep in learning and transfer of learning of an implicit continuous motor task. Twenty-three neurologically intact individuals (mean age 26.4 years) were randomly assigned to either a sleep group or a no-sleep group. The sleep group practiced a continuous tracking task in the evening and underwent retention and transfer testing the following morning, while the no-sleep group practiced the tracking task in the morning and underwent retention and transfer testing in the evening. The results show that in both the sleep and no-sleep groups, performance improved off-line without further practice for both the general skill and the sequence-specific skill. The results also indicate that sleep and time promote transfer of learning of both sequence-specific and general skill learning to a spatial and temporal variation of the motor task. These findings demonstrate that sleep does not play a critical role in promoting off-line learning and transfer of learning of an implicit continuous motor task.

NATO needs better methods of measuring and predicting human performance, as well as novel methods of training soldiers that might enhance performance. New breakthroughs with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) show promise in both areas. Rationale: Our group initially and now at least three others, have demonstrated that a baseline fMRI scan while subjects are performing a task can predict who will respond poorly or well after sleep deprivation (SD). That is, the degree a person activates specific brain regions while performing a task when fully rested is related to and can predict their performance under a stressful condition like sleep deprivation (SD). We discuss whether more research in this area might develop this into a useful vocational screening tool. Description of methods employed and results obtained: Over the past year, we have developed methods to detect brain activity during MRI scanning and to feed those activity levels back to participants during the scan. This real-time feedback allows participants to adjust their performance based on their own brain activity, with the aim to increase brain activity. We have completed a preliminary study with 12 healthy young adults in a 3 Tesla Siemens MRI scanner and have ongoing research to further optimize brain feedback protocols. In the preliminary study, we first completed a baseline scan where participants were asked to imagine moving their right hand. In the second and third scans, participants were given real or false feedback (counterbalanced order) regarding their brain activity in left premotor brain cortex. Often brain activity decreases with repeated scanning, perhaps due to fatigue effects. We found that brain activity with real feedback remained at baseline levels in left premotor cortex, while brain activity with false feedback decreased. We hypothesize that brain feedback training can be used to enhance performance or maintain performance at baseline levels despite fatigue.

Caffeine has been shown to improve tasks with a vigilance component. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of caffeine in sleep-deprived individuals exposed to high levels of operational and environmental stress. Volunteers were 68 Navy SEAL trainees. Volunteers were administered caffeine (100, 200, 300 mg or placebo) after 72 hrs of sleep deprivation. Performance testing occurred 1-1.5 hrs and 8-10 hrs after caffeine or placebo administration. Tests included auditory and visual vigilance tests, four-choice reaction time, matching to sample, repeated acquisition, rifle marksmanship, mood and subjective sleepiness assessment. The combined effects of sleep deprivation and the operational and environmental stress of training significantly affected all measures adversely (ANOVAs, p<0.05 to 0.0001). Caffeine (200 or 300 mg) significantly improved (p<0.05) visual vigilance, reaction time, repeated acquisition, mood and alertness measures compared to placebo when sleep-deprived. Marksmanship was not affected by caffeine.

The onset of Daylight Savings Time (DST) occurs annually in the spring in most US states and many countries worldwide. It has previously been linked to increased incidence of motor vehicle accidents (Smith, 2016) and cardiac events (e.g., Hook et al., 2021), with acute sleep restriction believed to contribute. Whether DST onset has implications for young people’s cognitive function or academic performance has been less well studied, though some evidence an acute impact on cognitive performance has been identified in adolescents (e.g., Medina et al., 2015). This study adds to this evidence base by examining within-student variation in daily lesson performance (duration and score) on the days immediately following DST onset, compared to lessons completed during standard time (ST). We compare students who attend schools in states that follow DST to students in states that do not follow DST to determine whether any change in lesson performance arises due to the onset of DST.

In the second half of the 19th century, London was becoming a wealthy, industrialized city. It attracted many working class people from nearby towns and rural areas, all hoping to improve their lives and the futures of their family. But this growing population led to stiff competition for jobs, and the wealthy business owners didn't need to offer fair wages to get or keep workers, resulting in rampant poverty, overcrowding, and unsanitary slums. Many emigrated from Britian during this time, but for others things remained very desperate. This "light", satirical novel deals with what Ginx, one such poor man, did with the baby he could not afford to keep, and then what Charity and the Churches did with Ginx's Baby, what the Parish did with him, what the Clubs and Politicians did with him, and ultimately, what Ginx's Baby did with himself. - Summary by Lisa Reichert
