We derive differential equations for the modified Feynman propagator and for the density operator describing time-dependent measurements or histories continuous in time. We obtain an exact series solution and discuss its applications. Suppose the system is initially in a state with density operator $\rho(0)$ and the projection operator $E(t) = U(t) E U^\dagger(t)$ is measured continuously from $t = 0$ to $T$, where $E$ is a projector obeying $E\rho(0) E = \rho(0)$ and $U(t)$ a unitary operator obeying $U(0) = 1$ and some smoothness conditions in $t$. Then the probability of always finding $E(t) = 1$ from $t = 0$ to $T$ is unity. Generically $E(T) \neq E$ and the watched system is sure to change its state, which is the anti-Zeno paradox noted by us recently. Our results valid for projectors of arbitrary rank generalize those obtained by Anandan and Aharonov for projectors of unit rank.

One of the axioms of quantum field theory is the property of unitarity of the evolution operator. However, if one considers the quantum electrodynamics in the external field in the leading order of perturbation theory, one will find that the evolution transformation is a non-unitary canonical transformation of creation and annihilation operators. This observation was one of the arguments for the hypothesis that one should choose different representations of the canonical commutation relations at different moments of time in the exact quantum field theory. In this paper the contradiction is analyzed for the case of a simple quantum mechanical model being an analog of the leading order of the large-N field theory. On the one hand, this model is renormalized with the help of the constructive field theory methods; the Hilbert space and unitary evolution operator are constructed. On the other hand, the leading order of the evolution transformation in the strong external field is shown to be non-unitary. Thus, unitarity of evolution in the exact theory is not in contradiction with non-unitarity of the approximate theory.

Parrondo's games manifest the apparent paradox where losing strategies can be combined to win and have generated significant multidisciplinary interest in the literature. Here we review two recent approaches, based on the Fokker-Planck equation, that rigorously establish the connection between Parrondo's games and a physical model known as the flashing Brownian ratchet. This gives rise to a new set of Parrondo's games, of which the original games are a special case. For the first time, we perform a complete analysis of the new games via a discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) analysis, producing winning rate equations and an exploration of the parameter space where the paradoxical behaviour occurs.

We show analytically that the answer to the question, "The longer it has been since the last earthquake, the longer the expected time till the next ?" depends crucially on the statistics of the fluctuations in the interval times between earthquakes. The periodic, uniform, semigaussian, Rayleigh and truncated statistical distributions of interval times, as well as the Weibull distributions with exponent greater than 1, all have decreasing expected time to the next earthquake with increasing time since the last one, for long times since the last earthquake; the log-normal and power-law distributions and the Weibull distributions with exponents smaller than 1, have increasing times to the next earthquake as the elapsed time since the last increases, for long elapsed times. There is an identifiable crossover between these models, which is gauged by the rate of fall-off of the long-term tail of the distribution in comparison with an exponential fall-off. The response to the question for short elapsed times is also evaluated. The lognormal and power-law distributions give one response for short elapsed times and the opposite for long elapsed times. Even the sampling of a finite number of intervals from the Poisson distribution will lead to an increasing estimate of time to the next earthquake for increasing elapsed time since the last one.

Recently a suggestion has been made that standard textbook representations of hypersurfaces of simultaneity for the travelling twin in the twin "paradox" are incorrect. This suggestion is false: the standard textbooks are in agreement with a proper understanding of the relativity of simultaneity.

The Einstein-Podolski-Rosen paradox highlights several strange properties of quantum mechanics including the super position of states, the non locality and its limitation to determine an experiment only statistically. Here, this well known paradox is revisited theoretically for a pair of spin 1/2 systems in a singlet state under the assumption that in classical physics time evolves in discrete time steps Deltat while in quantum mechanics the individual spin system(s) evolve(s) between the eigenstates harmonically with a period of 4 Deltat. It is further assumed that time is a single variable, that the quantum mechanics time evolution and the classical physics discrete time evolution are coherent to each other, and that the precision of the start of the experiment and of the measurement time point are much less than Deltat. Under these conditions, it is demonstrated for a spin 1/2 system that the fast oscillation between the eigen states spin up and spin down reproduces the expected outcome of a single measurement as well as ensemble measurements without the need of postulating a simultaneous superposition of the spin system in its quantum state. When this concept is applied to a spin 1/2 system pair in a singlet state it is shown that no entanglement between the two spins is necessary to describe the system resolving the Einstein-Podolski-Rosen paradox.

A nomenclature for inertial frames and a notation for space and time coordinates is proposed to give an unambigous description of space-time experiments in special relativity. Of particular importance are the concepts of `base' and `travelling' frames and `primary' and `reciprocal' experiments. A detailed discussion of the twin paradox is presented. The physical basis of the differential aging effect is found to be a relativistic relative-velocity transformation relation, not, as hitherto supposed, the spurious `length contraction' effect.

It is proved in the paper that the non-conservative dissipative force and asymmetry of time reversal can be naturally introduced into classical statistical mechanics after retarded electromagnetic interaction between charged microparticles is considered. In this way, the rational dynamic foundation for classical statistical physics can established and the revised Liouville equation is obtained. The micro-canonical ensemble, the canonical ensemble, the distribution of near-independent subsystem, the distribution law of the Maxwell- Boltzmann and the Maxwell distribution of velocities are achieved directly from the Liouville equation without using the hypothesis of equal probability. The micro-canonical ensemble is considered unsuitable as the foundation of equivalent state theory again, for most of equivalent states of isolated systems are not the states with equal probabilities actually. The reversibility paradoxes in the processes of non-equivalent evolutions of macro-systems can be eliminated completely, and the united description of statistical mechanics of equivalent and nonequivalent states is reached. The revised BBKGY series equations and hydromechanics equations are reduced, the non-equivalent entropy of general systems is defined and the principle of entropy increment of the non-equivalent entropy is proved at last.

One of the major issues confronting theoretical physics is finding a quantum theory of gravity and a resolution to the cosmological constant problem. It is believed that a true quantum theory of gravity will lead to a solution to the this problem. Finding a quantum theory of gravity has been a difficult issue mainly because of the high energy scale required for testing quantum gravity which is far the reach of current accelerators. Also general relativity does not possess a natural time variable thus the nature of time is not clear in quantum gravity, a problem called the time paradox. The two main approaches are string theory and loop quantum gravity. String theory unifies all interaction but provides a perturbative background dependent formulation which violates general covariance. Loop quantum gravity provides a non-perturbative approach but does not provide a unified theory of interactions, which most physicist believe should be the case at Planck scale energies. It doesn't also seem to connect with low energy phenomena. In this note I look at how quantum cosmology provides useful inference toward a quantum gravity theory by merging inputs from the perturbative and the non-perturbative approaches, and resolving the time paradox issue.

This raises the question as to how physics ensures that only self-consistent loops are possible. We show that, for one particular case at least, the condition of self consistency is ensured by the interference of quantum mechanical amplitudes associated with the loop. If this can be applied to all loops then we have a mechanism by which inconsistent loops eliminate themselves.

The definition of probabilities in eternally inflating universes requires a measure to regulate the infinite spacetime volume, and much of the current literature uses a global time cutoff for this purpose. Such measures have been found to lead to paradoxical behavior, and recently Bousso, Freivogel, Leichenauer, and Rosenhaus have argued that, under reasonable assumptions, the only consistent interpretation for such measures is that time must end at the cutoff. Here we argue that there is an alternative, consistent formulation of such measures, in which time extends to infinity. Our formulation begins with a mathematical model of the infinite multiverse, which can be constructed without the use of a measure. Probabilities, which obey all the standard requirements for a probability measure, can then be defined by mathematical limits. They have a peculiar feature, however, which we call time-delay bias: if the outcome of an experiment is reported with a time delay that depends on the outcome, then the observation of the reports will be biased in favor of the shorter time delay. We show how the paradoxes can be resolved in this interpretation of the measure.

The paper is intended to clarify operational meaning of mass and time quantities as main characteristics of an atomic clock, which is considered a quantum oscillator in association with the de Broglie wave concept. The specification of the concept of clock in quantum terms reflects the idea of relativistic mass and time complementarity, which is important for avoiding ambiguity of such notions as ``time rate'', ``time record'', and ``elapsed time'' under relativistic conditions. We used this approach in SRT Kinematics to conduct a detailed analysis of the clock paradox; results are discussed. It is also shown that in SRT Dynamics the proper mass must be acted by Minkowski force, what results in a clock rate variation.

Tests such as Bell's inequality and Hardy's paradox show that joint probabilities and correlations between distant particles in quantum mechanics are inconsistent with local realistic theories. Here we experimentally demonstrate these concepts in the time domain, using a photonic entangling gate to perform nondestructive measurements on a single photon at different times. We show that Hardy's paradox is much stronger in time and demonstrate the violation of a temporal Bell inequality independent of the quantum state, including for fully mixed states.
