We consider the a posteriori error analysis of approximations of parabolic problems based on arbitrarily high-order conforming Galerkin spatial discretizations and arbitrarily high-order discontinuous Galerkin temporal discretizations. Using equilibrated flux reconstructions, we present a posteriori error estimates for a norm composed of the $L^2(H^1)\cap H^1(H^{-1})$-norm of the error and the temporal jumps of the numerical solution. The estimators provide guaranteed upper bounds for this norm, without unknown constants. Furthermore, the efficiency of the estimators with respect to this norm is local in both space and time, with constants that are robust with respect to the mesh-size, time-step size, and the spatial and temporal polynomial degrees. We further show that this norm, which is key for local space-time efficiency, is globally equivalent to the $L^2(H^1)\cap H^1(H^{-1})$-norm of the error, with polynomial-degree robust constants. The proposed estimators also have the practical advantage of allowing for very general refinement and coarsening between the timesteps.

The CESE development is driven by a belief that a solver should (i) enforce conservation laws in both space and time, and (ii) be built from a non-dissipative (i.e., neutrally stable) core scheme so that the numerical dissipation can be controlled effectively. To initiate a systematic CESE development of high order schemes, in this paper we provide a thorough discussion on the structure, consistency, stability, phase error, and accuracy of a new 4th-order space-time flux-conserving and neutrally stable CESE solver of an 1D scalar advection equation. The space-time stencil of this two-level explicit scheme is formed by one point at the upper time level and three points at the lower time level. Because it is associated with three independent mesh variables (the numerical analogues of the dependent variable and its 1st-order and 2ndorder spatial derivatives, respectively) and three equations per mesh point, the new scheme is referred to as the a(3) scheme. Through the von Neumann analysis, it is shown that the a(3) scheme is stable if and only if the Courant number is less than 0.5. Moreover, it is established numerically that the a(3) scheme is 4th-order accurate.

We derive source terms for the production of quarks and gluons from the QCD vacuum in the presence of a space-time dependent external chromofield A_{cl} to the order of S^{(1)}. We found that the source terms for the parton production processes A_{cl} -> q\bar{q} and A_{cl},A_{cl}A_{cl} -> gg also include the annihilation processes q\bar{q} -> A_{cl} and gg -> A_{cl},A_{cl}A_{cl}. The source terms we derive are applicable for the description of the production of partons with momentum p larger rhan gA which itself must be larger than \Lambda_{QCD}. We observe that these source terms for the production of partons from a space-time dependent chromofield can be used to study the production and equilibration of the quark-gluon plasma during the very early stages of an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision.

Discretizing the space-time white noise a modeling error is introduced and a regularized fourth-order linear stochastic parabolic problem is obtained. Fully-discrete approximations to the solution of the regularized problem are constructed by using, for discretization in space, a standard Galerkin finite element method based on C1 piecewise polynomials, and, for time-stepping, the Backward Euler method. In this manuscript we prove global existence and linear asymptotic behavior of small solutions to nonlinear wave equations. We assume that the quadratic part of the nonlinearity satisfies a non-resonant condition which is a generalization of the null condition given by Klainerman.

We introduce the spatial correlation function $C_Q(r)$ and temporal autocorrelation function $C_Q(t)$ of the local tetrahedral order parameter $Q\equiv Q(r,t)$. Using computer simulations of the TIP5P model of water, we investigate $C_Q(r)$ in a broad region of the phase diagram. First we show that $C_Q(r)$ displays anticorrelation at $r\approx 0.32$nm at high temperatures $T>T_W\approx 250$ K, which changes to positive correlation below the Widom line $T_W$. Further we find that at low temperatures $C_Q(t)$ exhibits a two-step temporal decay similar to the self intermediate scattering function, and that the corresponding correlation time $\tau_Q$ displays a dynamic crossover from non-Arrhenius behavior for $T>T_W$ to Arrhenius behavior for $T

The spontaneous breakdown of SO(10) symmetry of the IIB matrix model has been studied by using the improved mean field approximation (IMFA). In this report, the eighth-order contribution to the improved perturbative series is obtained, which involves evaluation of 20410 planar two-particle irreducible vacuum diagrams. We consider SO(d)-preserving configurations as ansatz (d=4,7). The development of plateau, the solution of self-consistency condition, is seen in both ansatz. The large ratio of the space-time extent of d-dimensional part against the remaining (10-d)-dimensional part is obtained for SO(4) ansatz evaluated at the representative points of the plateau. It would be interpreted as the emergence of four-dimensional space-time in the IIB matrix model.

Motivated by the problem of solving the Einstein equations, we discuss high order finite difference discretizations of first order in time, second order in space hyperbolic systems.Particular attention is paid to the case when first order derivatives that can be identified with advection terms are approximated with non-centered finite difference operators.We first derive general properties of these discrete operators, then we extend a known result on numerical stability for such systems to general order of accuracy.As an application we analyze the shifted wave equation, including the behavior of the numerical phase and group speeds at different orders of approximations. Special attention is paid to when the use of off-centered schemes improves the accuracy over the centered schemes.

We present a method of directly testing whether time continues to have its usual meaning on scales of 0.003. The same result may be used to deduce that the speed of light in vacuo is exact to a few parts in 10^32.

Frost tells a good tale, and the book is not only of interest to enthusiasts of Dickens and the county of Kent.<BR/><BR/>He includes some of Dickens' own descriptions of locations, as well as regaling us with anecdotes about towns and villages which he visits, including an account of the last armed rising on British soil - the Battle of Bossenden Wood.<BR/><BR/>As well as accounts of his travels through the highways and byways of Kent in the footsteps of Dickens and his characters, he also wanders into the lanes of myth and legend, sometimes making up his own stories along the way.<BR/><BR/>After managing to forgive his cardinal sin of confusing Men of Kent and Kentish Men in the first chapter, I found this rather odd mixture of memoir, short stories and literary travelogue a most enjoyable read.
