Three Men in a Boat is one of the most popular English travelogues, having never been out of print since its publication in 1889 and causing its publisher to comment, “I cannot imagine what becomes of all the copies of that book I issue. I often think the public must eat them.” The novel itself is a brisk, light-hearted, and funny account of a two-week boating holiday taken by three friends up the Thames river. Jerome is a sort of everyman narrator, and even the stodgiest reader can sympathize with at least some of the situations and conundrums he and his friends find themselves in during their adventure. Interspersed between comic moments are slightly more serious descriptions of the picturesque villages and landscape the friends explore, making Three Men in a Boat not just a comic novel but an actual account of the life, times, and land of late 19th century greater London.

I recently came across the book "Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome K. Jerome, published in 1889, while working my way through classic works of literature...and instantly fell in love! This is the most humorous, heart-warming, informative, inspirational and, occasionally, insane book I've ever read, which tells the story of three men and their dog on a boating holiday across the River Thames in a skiff. Unfortunately, while working my way through the text, I came across several words whose meaning have changed over time, several phrases that are no longer in current usage, historical facts and figures that are not commonly known, references to poems, books and songs that have long since been forgotten, and so on. I thought that this was a shame, so I annotated the text. But, I may have gone a bit too far in my annotations, which is why I call this the ULTRA-ANNOTATED EDITION.  Here's what I did: Annotations appear in square brackets within the text, not as footnotes or endnotes.  The annotations are displayed in a slightly smaller grey font whereas the text is black. This will allow you to easily skip over the annotations when you read the book again...and you will read it again and again and again... Any word I believe changed definition, or any word that might be new to younger readers, has been annotated.  I used "Chambers's English Dictionary" from 1889 as my primary source for definitions. Occasionally, I had to create a "franken-definition" based on several sources until I felt the definition satisfied Jerome's intended meaning. Words to songs mentioned throughout the book have been included in the text. The complete text of the poem "Babes in the Wood" as well as one complete story from Thomas Day's "The History of Sandford and Merton" have been included in the appendix. An explanation, including graphics, of how a river/canal lock operates appears in the appendix. A discussion of the origin of the word "Runnymede" appears in the appendix. I have included all of the original graphics from the 1889 edition. Note that the scan of the original images had a slight taupe tinge to them. I attempted to remove this tinge to create black-and-white versions using Gimp, but the images became lifeless, so I kept the original tinged images.  Since the printed paper is colored tan, the taupe images work quite well. I have also included additional images of paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc. not contained in the original work. These are used to further explain Jerome's text as well as produce an edition of the work that is not just another dump of the text (which you can find strewn about amazon.com like garbage on a windy trash day). Please be aware that I have made considerable use of Wikipedia, images from Wikimedia Commons, images from the Art Institute of Chicago and other public domain sources. You can find both book references as well as complete source annotations in the appendix.  I have included Google Earth Pro satellite images of many locks and weirs mentioned throughout the text. I have included Wikipedia's mini-maps whenever a city/town is mentioned in the text. With all of that said, I am neither a scholar nor an academic.
