In this Fully Connected episode, Daniel and Chris kick it off by noting that Stability AI released their SDXL 1.0 LLM! They discuss its virtues, and then dive into a discussion regarding how the United States, European Union, and other entities are approaching governance of AI through new laws and legal frameworks. In particular, they review the White House's approach, noting the potential for unexpected consequences.

The current study aims to investigate how rational thinking skills develop throughout university education, with a particular focus on comparing theoretical (psychology) and applied (health sciences) training programs. Rational thinking, in this context, is operationalized through multiple dimensions such as probabilistic reasoning, scientific reasoning, temporal discounting, and calibration of knowledge. The study also explores how cognitive dispositions and analytical thinking tendencies influence this development, and how it interacts with moral reasoning and belief systems over time. A central component of the research is the administration of the Assessment of Rational Thinking for Youth (ART-Y) battery (Toplak & Stanovich, 2024), which measures rationality across five subdomains: Probabilistic and Statistical Reasoning, Scientific Reasoning, Knowledge Calibration, Rational Temporal Discounting, and Avoidance of Framing. Based on recent empirical findings, the Avoidance of Framing subtest will be excluded due to its weak psychometric properties. The remaining subtests will be analyzed to evaluate differences between first-year and fourth-year students, as well as between students from psychology and health sciences departments. It is hypothesized that gains in rational thinking will be greater for curriculum-relevant subtests (e.g., scientific and probabilistic reasoning) among psychology students due to the nature of their theoretical training. To explain individual differences in rationality, two major constructs will be evaluated: cognitive dispositions and analytical thinking tendencies. Cognitive dispositions will be assessed using Newton et al.’s (2023) 4-Component Thinking Styles Questionnaire, which synthesizes the literature into four key domains: Actively Open-Minded Thinking (AOT), Preference for Effortful Thinking (PET), Preference for Intuitive Thinking (PIT), and Close Minded Thinking (CMT). Additionally, participants' analytical versus intuitive thinking style will be assessed via the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) (Frederick, 2005), a well-established measure of reflective thinking. Building on dual-process and developmental rationality theories, the study proposes that AOT and PET will mediate or moderate the relationship between academic experience and rational performance. It is also hypothesized that CRT scores will improve over academic years, particularly in psychology students, and will partially mediate rational thinking improvements. Beyond cognitive variables, the study explores moral and belief-related outcomes expected to co-develop with rationality. Specifically, we predict that students scoring higher in rational thinking and cognitive dispositions will show stronger endorsement of individualizing moral foundations (Care/Harm, Fairness/Cheating) and greater moral relativism. These constructs will be measured using the Moral Foundations Questionnaire-2 (MFQ-2) (Zakharin & Bates, 2023)and a shortened version of the Ethical Position Questionnaire (EPQ-5) (O’Boyle & Forsyth, 2021), which retains only the items measuring relativism. The study will also investigate the association between rational thinking and religious belief change (Stagnaro & Pennycook, 2025), a relatively underexplored area in Turkish samples. two custom items assessing belief revision tendencies will be included. It is hypothesized that participants with higher rationality, especially those with high AOT and PET scores, will be more likely to report having reevaluated or changed their religious beliefs. To provide a well-rounded profile, demographic and background variables will also be collected, including university entrance exam rankings, parental education level, political orientation, religiosity, and grades from statistics courses. These variables may serve as covariates in the analyses. Data will be collected from six groups: first- and fourth-year students from psychology, speech and language therapy, and nutrition and dietetics programs. The study will be conducted over the course of a single academic semester. Testing sessions will take place in classroom settings, divided into two parts (each lasting approximately 25–30 minutes) to reduce cognitive fatigue and ensure focus. Participants will complete the study in a quiet and structured environment prior to their regular course hours. Participation will be voluntary and informed consent will be obtained. Students will receive 2 bonus points for their involvement, as permitted within the scope of course evaluation guidelines. Through this multi-method, cross-sectional design, the study aims to generate novel insights into how rationality, cognitive style, moral reasoning and belief change co-develop across disciplines and educational stages, while also contributing culturally relevant data to the literature.

This follow-up study examines effect of environmental cognitive alternatives on system change support and collective environmentalist action intentions, moderated by structural attributions and controlling for individual attributions for climate change.

This session on Generative AI and Inquiring Systems: Ways of Patterning and Ways of Knowing was announced at https://wiki.st-on.org/2025-01-08   Generative AI works by analyzing language (or other digital input), and synthesizing outputs. In what ways might system theories help us augment intelligence? Five ways of knowing were philosophically grounded as inquiring systems.   * "Inquiry is an activity which produces knowledge".  C. West Churchman (1971), p. 8 * "An Inquiry System, or IS for short, is a system of interrelated components for producing knowledge on a problem or issue of importance.".  Ian Mitroff (1995), p. 29 These ways of knowing not only explain how people can come to understand some ideas as "true", but also can aid in grounding logic(s) towards structuring the validity of findings and conclusions. This session will: * trace the development of information processing (i.e. from web search to generative AI); * outline five ways of knowing, as inquiring systems; and * review diversity in the way that generative AI is appraoched by a variety of (free, without charge) providers of chat. ## Session Leaders The session will be moderated by Zaid Khan, a strategist and graduate of the OCADU SFI program. The lead commentator will be David Ing. a trustee of the International Society for the Systems Sciences, and graduate of IBM after 28 years. The discussant will be Nishat Korada, a business analyst with experience in IT project management and data science.

The size of a country’s population has an impact on virtually everything: urbanization and land development, infrastructure, housing, energy use, consumption of resources, waste production and management, jobs and more. Canada is rapidly growing its population yet there is no public discussion about what an optimum population might be. It is assumed that a continually growing population is good thing because it makes the economy grow. But who is benefitting from all that growth? Why are the people upon whom growth is being imposed not consulted about whether they want it? The world population is still growing by about 70 million annually. Even with vastly increased immigration, Canada cannot have much impact on such growth. It can however support ethical family planning programs in its foreign aid and share its knowledge and expertise on sustainability issues. Ideally, it could lead by example to show that a stable or shrinking population is economically viable. Bio: Madeline Weld is retired from Health Canada, having previously worked at the University of Ottawa. She has a B.Sc. in zoology from the University of Guelph (1977) and an M.S. (1979) and Ph.D. (1983) in physiology from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. Madeline has had a lifelong interest in population – triggered no doubt by seeing population density and poverty up close, starting at the age of four, when her father was posted to Rio de Janeiro (the then capital of Brazil) for three years (1959-62) and later to Pakistan (1965-67). She has been a member of Population Institute Canada since its founding in 1992 (under another name by retired engineer Whitman Wright) and president since 1995. PIC is a voluntary organization that promotes awareness of population matters and sustainable populations for all countries.
