The general equations governing the large amplitude flexural vibration of any thin elastic shell using curvilinear orthogonal coordinates are derived and consist of two coupled, nonlinear, partial differential equations in the normal displacement w and the stress function F. From these equations, the governing equations for the case of shells of revolution or flat plates can be readily obtained as special cases. The material of the shell or plate is isotropic and homogeneous and Hooke's law for the two-dimensional case is valid. It is suggested that the difference between the hardening type of nonlinearity in the case of flat plates and straight beams and the softening type of nonlinearity in the case of shells and rings can, in general, be traced to the amount of curvature present in the underformed median surface of the structure concerned.

Progress on bending and buckling of plates and deep buckling and post-buckling regime analysis for complete spherical and oblate spheroidal shells is reported. The use of von Karman-type equations and the Galerkin method (with orthogonal series) is reported. Some new work on orthogonal expansions and hydrodynamic stability are also reported. Special emphasis is placed on new program for solving non-linear numerical equations in several variables. (Author)

9DTIC AD0739976: Random Vibration Of Thin Elastic Plates And Shallow Shells

The large amplitude vibrations of thin elastic plates and shallow shells having boundary conditions and subjected to random excitation are investigated by using various approximate techniques. The random vibrations of rectangular plates and circular plates subjected to white random excitation are simulated numerically by two different methods. The first method is that the governing equations are reduced to a single-degree-of-freedom dynamical system and the reduced equation is then integrated numerically by the Runge-Kutta method employing the simulated approximate white noise as an input. The second method consists in integrating the equation of motion and the compatibility equation numerically by a finite-difference method employing the simulated approximate white noise as an input.
