The initial part of this article discusses some recent experiments on electron transfer reactions and comments on the related theory, including the frequency of solvent fluctuations. Also described are recent advances with Babamov and Lopez on the dynamics of H(-)atom transfer reactions. We then outline the application of the basic idea to H and H(+) transfers in complex systems and in condensed phases (fast H(-) coordinates, slow remaining coordinates). Similarities and differences between electron transfers and H or H(+) transfers are next described. The relation of the present theory of such transfers to conventional transition state theory is discussed. (Author)

We develop a theory of magnetooscillations in the photoconductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas observed in recent experiments. The effect is governed by a change of the electron distribution function induced by the microwave radiation. We analyze a nonlinearity with respect to both the dc field and the microwave power, as well as the temperature dependence determined by the inelastic relaxation rate.

Using first principles, all-electron calculations and dynamical simulations we study the behavior of the A_1g and E_g coherent phonons induced in Bi by intense laser pulses. We determine the potential landscapes in the laser heated material and show that they exhibit phonon-softening, phonon-phonon coupling, and anharmonicities. As a consequence the E_g mode modulates the A_1g oscillations and higher harmonics of both modes appear, which explains recent isotropic reflectivity measurements. Our results offer a unified description of the different experimental observations performed so far on bismuth.

The temperature dependence of the electron spin relaxation time in MgB2 is anomalous as it does not follow the temperature dependence of the resistivity above 150 K, it has a maximum around 400 K, and it decreases for higher temperatures. This violates the well established Elliot-Yafet theory of electron spin relaxation in metals. We show that the anomaly occurs when the quasi-particle scattering rate (in energy units) becomes comparable to the energy difference between the conduction- and a neighboring band. We find that the anomalous behavior is related to the unique band structure of MgB$_2$ and the large electron-phonon coupling. The saturating spin-lattice relaxation can be regarded as the spin transport analogue of the Ioffe-Regel criterion of electron transport.

The unusual dispersion of electron states in antinodal direction for $n_{h}\simeq\frac{1}{8}$ holes/copper is explained. In photoelectron excitations, transformations of the $\mathbf{k}$ space as a consequence of symmetry breaking proves to be an exceptional phenomenon distinctly reflected by the experiments. Paired photoelectron emissions are predicted that enable a new energetic upward shift termed as \emph{pair shake-up effect} which explains the experimentally observed sharp transition between non-dispersive and dispersive behaviour. The disappearance of antinodal states for $\mathbf{k}_{||}\epsilon[0,\pm \pi/2]$ is explained.

Local and semilocal density-functional approximations for the exchange-correlation energy fail badly in the zero-thickness limit of a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas, where the density variation is rapid almost everywhere. Here we show that a fully nonlocal fifth-rung functional, the inhomogeneous Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sj\"olander (STLS) approach, which employs both occupied and unoccupied Kohn-Sham orbitals, recovers the true two-dimensional STLS limit and appears to be remarkably accurate for any thickness of the slab (and thus for the dimensional crossover). We also show that this good behavior is only partly due to the use of the full exact exchange energy.

A series of weak-coupling perturbation theories which include the lowest-order vertex corrections are applied to the attractive Holstein model in infinite dimensions. The approximations are chosen to reproduce the iterated perturbation theory in the limit of half-filling and large phonon frequency (where the Holstein model maps onto the Hubbard model). Comparison is made with quantum Monte Carlo solutions to test the accuracy of different approximation schemes.

We derive a non-Markovian theory for waiting time distributions of consecutive single electron transfer events. The presented microscopic Pauli rate equation formalism couples the open electrodes to the many-body system, allowing to take finite bias and temperature into consideration. Numerical results reveal transient oscillations of distinct system frequencies due to memory in the waiting time distributions. Memory effects can be approximated by an expansion in non-Markovian corrections. This method is employed to calculate memory landscapes displaying preservation of memory over multiple consecutive electron transfers.

It is pointed out that relativistic classical electron theory with classical electromagnetic zero-point radiation has a scaling symmetry which is suitable for understanding the equilibrium behavior of classical thermal radiation at a spectrum other than the Rayleigh-Jeans spectrum. In relativistic classical electron theory, the masses of the particles are the only scale-giving parameters associated with mechanics while the action-angle variables are scale invariant. The theory thus separates the interaction of the action variables of matter and radiation from the scale-giving parameters. Classical zero-point radiation is invariant under scattering by the charged particles of relativistic classical electron theory. The basic ideas of the matter -radiation interaction are illustrated in a simple relativistic classical electromagnetic example.

We study ground-state properties of a two-site, two-electron Holstein model describing two molecules coupled indirectly via electron-phonon interaction by using both exact diagonalization and self-consistent diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory. The Hartree and self-consistent Born approximations used in the present work are studied at different levels of self-consistency. The governing equations are shown to exhibit multiple solutions when the electron-phonon interaction is sufficiently strong whereas at smaller interactions only a single solution is found. The additional solutions at larger electron-phonon couplings correspond to symmetry-broken states with inhomogeneous electron densities. A comparison to exact results indicates that this symmetry breaking is strongly correlated with the formation of a bipolaron state in which the two electrons prefer to reside on the same molecule. The results further show that the Hartree and partially self-consistent Born solutions obtained by enforcing symmetry do not compare well with exact energetics, while the fully self-consistent Born approximation improves the qualitative and quantitative agreement with exact results in the same symmetric case. This together with a presented natural occupation number analysis supports the conclusion that the fully self-consistent approximation describes partially the bipolaron crossover. These results contribute to better understanding how these approximations cope with the strong localizing effect of the electron-phonon interaction.

The paper determines the anomalous magnetic moment and Lamb energy level shift in the second order of the perturbation theory using the algorithm of self-energy expression regularization in quantum electrodynamics that meets the relativistic and gauge invariance requirements; the comparison is made to the associated conventional quantum electrodynamics results. A limiting 4-impulse with an infinitely large temporal component and limited value of spatial components that depend quite weakly on the Dirac particle impulse variation is introduced within the algorithm. The answer in regard to the agreement between the experimental data and results of the calculations by the algorithm of this paper will be given by the calculations of the next order of the perturbation theory which are being planned for the nearest future.

We have studied the temperature dependence of the rate of energy transfer from electronic sub-system to phononic sub-system in the case of cuprates, when the system is photo-excited by a femtosecond laser pulse. In the pseudogap state, taking the electronic dispersion {\it as linear} near the nodal points of the Brillouin zone, we show that the rate of energy transfer from electronic sub-system to phononic sub-system is proportional to $T^{5}$ at lower temperatures ($T T_0$), here $T_0$ is the Debye temperature for cuprates. The linear electronic dispersion in the pseudogap state introduces new terms in the expression of energy transfer as given by M. I. KAGANOV et.al. \cite{kaganov}. {\it But the leading terms are the same which are found in the case of metals in the above reference.} The electron-phonon relaxation time follows $T^{-3}$ law for cuprates which agrees well with the experimental results \cite{demsar,Jdemsar}.

This paper deals primarily with 3-D effects and efficiency enhancement methods in a steady state FEL amplifier configuration. We treat finite transverse dimension effects associated with (1) the wiggler field, (2) electron beam, and (3) radiation beam. Our formulation includes efficiency enhancement schemes such as spatially contouring the wiggler field as well as accelerating the electron beam. Finally, a 3-D example of a 10.6 microns FEL with enhanced efficiency is given. (Author)

In order to model the phase-coherent scattering of electrons in two-dimensional electron gases in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a general partial-wave expansion is developed for scattering from a cylindrically symmetric potential. The theory is applied to possible electron flow imaging experiments using a moveable scanning probe microscope tip. In such experiments, it is demonstrated theoretically that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling can give rise to spin interference effects, even for unpolarized electrons at nonzero temperature and no magnetic field.

A theory of the cyclotron maser interactions between an annular electron beam and the standing electromagnetic wave in a cavity structure is formulated on the basis of the relativistic Vlasov equation and the Maxwell equations. Detailed analytical expressions for the beam-wave coupling coefficient, beam energy gain, and threshold beam power have been derived for the fundamental and higher cyclotron harmonics. Physical interpretations of these results and comparison with cyclotron maser interactions in a waveguide structure will be presented. Methods of parameter optimization and their applications to experiments will be illustrated through numerical examples. (Author)

In this paper the linear and nonlinear theory of the electron cyclotron maser instability is considered. The configuration used to study the laser instability consists of relativistic electrons gyrating about and drifting along a uniform magnetic field within a parallel plate waveguide. Relativistic effects associated with the gyrating electrons are responsible for excitation of the transverse electric mode in the waveguide. Linear theory shows that the growth rate maximizes when the actual beam velocity coincides with the axial wave group velocity of the excited electromagnetic wave. This allows the performance of nonlinear analysis in a frame where both the axial wave number and axial beam velocity vanish. The nonlinear analysis shows that there are two possible mechanisms for the saturation of the unstable wave: i. depletion of the available free energy associated with the rotating particles. ii. phase trapping of the gyrating electrons in the wave. The initial beam parameters determine which of the two mechanisms is responsible for saturation. Competition between the two saturation mechanisms leads to a peaking in the energy conversion efficiency as a function of beam energy. Numerical results of the nonlinear formalism show that energy conversion efficiencies from the particles to the wave can be as high as 60 percent in the beam frame.

We apply the Thermal Field Theory methods to study the propagation of photons in a plasma layer, that is a plasma in which the electrons are confined to a two-dimensional plane sheet. We calculate the photon self-energy and determine the appropriate expression for the photon propagator in such a medium, from which the properties of the propagating modes are obtained. The formulas for the photon dispersion relations and polarization vectors are derived explicitly in some detail for some simple cases of the thermal distributions of the charged particle gas, and appropriate formulas that are applicable in more general situations are also given.

Physically valid and numerically efficient approximations for the exchange and correlation energy are critical for reduced density-matrix functional theory to become a widely used method in electronic structure calculations. Here we examine the physical limits of power functionals of the form $f(n,n')=(n n')^\alpha$ for the scaling function in the exchange-correlation energy. To this end we obtain numerically the minimizing momentum distributions for the three- and two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas, respectively. In particular, we examine the limiting values for the power $\alpha$ to yield physically sound solutions that satisfy the Lieb-Oxford lower bound for the exchange-correlation energy and exclude pinned states with the condition $n({\mathbf k})

This report presents several contributions to the formulation, calculation and understanding of the effects of electron-phonon interaction in metals with variation in the electronic density of states on the scale of a typical phonon energy. The A15 compound Nb3Sn is studied in detail with this theory. (Author)

This paper presents a self-consistent non-linear treatment of the finite transverse dimensional effects associated with (1) the wiggler field, (2) the electron beam and (3) the radiation beam of the free electron laser (FEL) in a steady state amplifying configuration. Our formulation incorporates various efficiency enhancement schemes. A linearly polarized magnetic wiggler is used for our formulation. The inherent gradient of the magnetic wigglers in the transverse direction introduces betatron oscillations, which cause an increase in the effective axial beam temperature. The radiation beam in the presence of the electron beam and the magnetic wiggler experience diffraction as well as refraction effects. We find that the 3-D effects can lead to substantial differences in the effects compared to the 1-D theory. Finally a 3-D numerical illustration of a 10.6 micron FEL is given.

The condensation energy of the homogeneous electron gas is calculated within the density functional theory for superconductors. Purely electronic considerations include the exchange energy exactly and the correlation energy on a level of the random phase approximation. The singlet superconductivity is assumed, and the Coulomb interaction is studied with a model pairing potential at the angular momentum up to $l$=9 and at densities 1$\leq$$r_s$$\leq$10. The homogeneous gas remains nonsuperconducting up to $r_s$$\simeq$9. Very weak negative value of the condensation energy has been found for f-waves and higher-$l$ pairing at $r_s$=10.

In this work, a promising new electron cyclotron wear oscillator is proposed and analyzed. The configuration utilizes an open resonator cavity containing a gyrating electron beam which translates along an external magnetic field. The magnetic field is directed perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of the open resonator. Because the wave-particle interaction volume is extremely large, the total input electron beam power can be high and the power density low.

A simple expression for the conductance steps in the inelastic electron tunneling from spin excitations in a single magnetic atom adsorbed on a non-magnetic metal surfaces is derived. The inelastic coupling between the tunneling electron and the spin is via the exchange coupling and is treated in an impulsive approximation using the Tersoff-Hamann approximation for the tunneling between the tip and the sample. Our results for conductance steps justify the analysis carried out by Hirjebedin et al. [Science 317, 1199 (2007)] of observed step-like conductances by inelastic electron tunneling from spin excitations in a single magnetic adatom using a simple spin matrix element. In addition, our result gives a simple expression for the magnitudes of conductance steps and their lateral spatial variation with respect to the tip position, which can be calculated directly from spin-polarized wave functions at the Fermi level of the sample.

A simple optimization scheme is used to compute the density-density response function of an electron liquid. Higher order terms in the perturbation expansion beyond the random phase approximation are summed approximately by enforcing the constraint that the spin density pair correlation functions be positive. The theory is applied to the 3-D homogeneous electron gas at zero temperature. Quantitative comparison is made with previous theory and data from quantum Monte Carlo simulation. When thermodynamic consistency is enforced on the compressibility, agreement with the available simulation data is very good for the entire paramagnetic region, from weakly to strongly correlated densities. In this case, the accuracy of the theory is comparable to or better than the best of previous theory, including the full GW approximation. In addition, it is found that the spin susceptibility diverges at a lower density ($r_s \approx 107$) than the current estimate for the liquid-solid transition. Application of the theory to inhomogeneous electron liquids is discussed.

We develop a theory for the anomalous interlayer conductance peaks observed in bilayer electron systems at nu=1. Our model shows the that the size of the peak at zero bias decreases rapidly with increasing in-plane magnetic field, but its location is unchanged. The I-V characteristic is linear at small voltages, in agreement with experimental observations. In addition we make quantitative predictions for how the inter-layer conductance peaks vary in position with in-plane magnetic field at high voltages. Finally, we predict novel bi-stable behavior at intermediate voltages.

Flucturations in electron density and temperature coupled through OHM's Law are studied for MHD power generator and MPD arc thruster applications. The dispersion relation based on linear theory is derived, and the two limiting cases of infinite ionization rate and frozen flow are examined. The nonlinear effects of the frozen flow case are then studied in the quasilinear limit. Equations are derived for the amplitude of the fluctuation and its effect upon Ohm's Law and the electron temperature equation. Conditions under which a steady state can exist in the presence of the fluctuation are examined, and effective transport properties are determined.

A novel method of microwave power conversion to direct current is discussed that relies on a modification of well known resonant linear relativistic electron accelerator techniques. An analysis is presented that shows how, by establishing a 'slow' electromagnetic field in a waveguide, electrons liberated from an array of field emission cathodes, are resonantly accelerated to several times their rest energy, thus establishing an electric current over a large potential difference. Such an approach is not limited to the relatively low frequencies that characterize the operation of rectennas, and can, with appropriate waveguide and slow wave structure design, be employed in the 300 to 600 GHz range where much smaller transmitting and receiving antennas are needed.

Due to the strongly nonlocal nature of $f_{xc}({\bf r},{\bf r}',\omega)$ the {\em scalar} exchange and correlation (xc) kernel of the time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT), the formula for Q the friction coefficient of an interacting electron gas (EG) for ions tends to give a too large value of Q for heavy ions in the medium- and low-density EG, if we adopt the local-density approximation (LDA) to $f_{xc}({\bf r},{\bf r}',\omega)$, even though the formula itself is formally exact. We have rectified this unfavorable feature by reformulating the formula for Q in terms of the {\em tensorial} xc kernel of the time dependent current-density functional theory, to which the LDA can be applied without intrinsic difficulty. Our numerical results find themselves in a considerably better agreement with the experimental stopping power of Al and Au for slow ions than those previously obtained within the LDA to the TDDFT.

Zij maakt, in het geheim, een nieuw testament, waarin ze al haar geld nalaat aan een arm achternichtje, Lina Ochten. Er is wel een voorwaarde: Lina moet getrouwd zijn op het moment dat het testament in werking treedt. De twee neven van de oude dame, de ijdele hoofdambtenaar Pieter Botwater en de flamboyante musicus Anasthase van Sterren, zijn er altijd van uit gegaan dat zij het fortuin samen zouden erven. Als ze bij toeval te weten komen van het nieuwe testament zijn ze woedend, en beramen ze ieder voor zich een plan. Spiegel, das Kätzchen (Untertitel: Ein Märchen) ist eine Novelle des Schweizer Dichters Gottfried Keller. Sie bildet den Schluss des ersten Bandes der 1856 erschienenen Novellensammlung Die Leute von Seldwyla. Der Kater Spiegel schließt, um nicht zu verhungern, mit dem Seldwyler Stadthexenmeister Pineiß einen schlimmen Vertrag: Pineiß, der zu seiner Hexerei den Schmer (das Fett) von Katzen braucht, verpflichtet sich, Spiegel herauszufüttern. Als Gegenleistung muss Spiegel sich schlachten lassen, sobald er fett genug ist. Aber der kluge Kater windet sich heraus, und am Ende ist Pineiß der Angeschmierte: Spiegel vermittelt ihm eine schöne junge Ehefrau mit reicher Mitgift, die sich aber in der Hochzeitsnacht als scheußliche alte Hexe entpuppt; woher, laut Erzähler, das Sprichwort stammen soll: „er hat der Katze den Schmer abgekauft“, wenn jemand einen schlechten Handel gemacht hat. – Vordergründig geht es in der Novelle um die Erklärung der Herkunft eines Sprichwortes. Johannes Kabis, der sich selbst John Kabys nennt, weil dies fremdartiger und glückhafter klingt, ist der Meinung, dass der rechte Mann ruhig, mit nur wenigen Meisterschlägen sein Glück zu schmieden habe. Das scheint ihm selbst auch nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten und Rückschlägen recht gut zu gelingen. Da sie alle drei die Kammmacherei kaufen möchten, und dazu alle die selbe vermögende Jungfer heiraten wollen, werden sie zu erbitterten Rivalen. Er könnte zufrieden sein, doch fühlt er sich zu höherem berufen und widmet sich ohne Talent aber mit desto größerer Hingabe und Selbstüberschätzung der Schriftstellerei. Die gutmütige Gritli kann für die überdrehte Schreiberei ihres Mannes kein Verständnis aufbringen, dennoch bestimmt er sie zu "seiner Muse" und verfällt auf die Idee, ihr von einer Geschäftsreise salbungsvoll leidenschaftliche Liebesbriefe zu schreiben; diese soll sie in gleichem Sinne beantworten, auf dass er diesen Briefwechsel einmal in Buchform veröffentlichen könne. Gritli, die sich dieser Aufgabe nicht gewachsen sieht, findet in ihrer Not eine listige Lösung: sie schreibt die Briefe ihres Mannes säuberlich ab und lässt sie ihrem Nachbarn, dem schüchternen und schwärmerischen armen Unterlehrer Wilhelm zukommen. Dieser, von der heimlichen Liebe der Gritli ganz betört, schreibt ihr leidenschaftlich zurück, so dass Gritli diese Briefe nur wiederum abzuschreiben braucht, um ganz die von ihrem Manne gewünschten Antworten bereit zu haben. So meinen die beiden Männer, ihre Briefe jeweils an Gritli zu richten, schreiben sich jedoch letztlich gegenseitig die herzlichsten Liebesbeteuerungen. Doch kann das natürlich nicht lange gut gehen - während Wilhelm, durch "Gritlis" Briefe ermuntert, sich Hoffnungen macht, entdeckt Viggi bald Gritlis schändlichen Betrug... In fact, over half of the book is Anne Sullivan's written reports for the Perkins Institute on her unique (homeschooling on steroids!) teaching methods, which she invented as she went along. John Albert Macy, Anne Sullivan's husband, was uniquely positioned to gather the written material in this book. He helped Helen edit the now famous "The Story Of My Life" (Part 1 of this trilogy), describing her early life in her own words. He was able to gather Helen's early letters (Part 2), and for Part 3 to gain access to Anne Sullivan's papers, and sundry correspondence from the great influencers in Helen's life.
