We propose an X Window Graphical User Interface (GUI) which is tailored to the operations of NASA GSFC's Network Control Center (NCC), the NASA Ground Terminal (NGT), the White Sands Ground Terminal (WSGT), and the Second Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Ground Terminal (STGT). The proposed GUI can also be easily extended to other Ground Network (GN) Tracking Stations due to its standardized nature.

In the last couple of years, several organizations have developed bindings to, or implementation of, the X Window System software for use in Ada programs. Two of the more significant accomplishments were the bindings developed by the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) 1,2 and those developed by the boeing Aerospace Corporation 3. In 1987, SAIC developed Ada bindings to X11R4. Their work was performed under a Software Technology for Adaptable Reliable Systems (STARS) foundation contract, and is therefore in the public domain. Stephen Hyland gives an overview of these bindings in 1. In this paper we present a detailed example of how to use the SAIC and Boeing bindings to interface an Ada program to X. We discuss issues involving SAIC/Boeing binding compatibility, pixmap creation and use, connection with the X-server, creation of several different widgets, and adding appropriate callback procedures. We give a more general description of the issues involved in building Ada/X interfaces.

Intelligent tutoring systems have failed to achieve practical benefits commensurate with their potential for time savings, increased efficiency, and improved effectiveness. The problem consists of three inter- related factors. First, the complexity and computational requirements of these systems often causes user interface design to be relegated to an ancillary role in the development cycle. Second, creating an effective and usable interface is an inherently difficult task that often requires as much time and effort as the logical components. Finally, the lack of an intuitive and navigable interface interferes with the student's primary task of learning new material, precluding the success of these systems. Our approach is to provide an alternative framework for tutorial developers which assumes the burden of interface design. This framework consists of a hypertext-based instructional format that authors can easily convert their lessons into, facilitating rapid prototype development. By creating an Intelligent Learning Environment (ILE) designed to dynamically integrate hypertext-based tutors and reference materials, we can also provide users with a consistent, familiar, and highly navigable interface which will simplify the learning process. Using this approach we have successfully implemented an integrated environment for the X Window System. We have created a course of instruction for the Ada programming language, including the Ada 9X language Reference Manual in hypertext format. The ILE may be dynamically extended through the modification of a text-based configuration file. This enables additional hypertext-based tutorials, reference manuals, and help systems to be incorporated into the learning environment without requiring recompilation.

The objective of this research effort is to perform an object oriented analysis, design and implementation of the graphical user interface (GUI) for the SATool II system. SATool II is a computer Assisted Software Engineering (CASE) workbench developed using Ada and the X Window system. It is designed to serve as an IDEFo graphical project editor and data dictionary editor. IDEF0 is the ICAM Definition Method Zero graphical notation language adopted by the Air Force to produce a function model of a manufacturing system or environment. The Air Force Institute of Technology is conducting on-going research in the use of IDEFo in the requirements analysis phase of the software lifecycle. This thesis describes the object oriented design and implementation of the GUI based on an entity-relationship model developed by earlier research efforts for the IDEFo language. It also describes the integration of the overall SATool II system composed of the essential model, drawing model, machine- independent Ada graphical support environment, and the graphical user interface.

The user interface is the component of the application through which the user's actions are translated unto one or more requests for services of the the applications, and that provides feedback concerning the outcome of the requested actions. Because of the importance of this interaction, the design of efficient and easy to use user interfaces is receiving increased attention. Most people now realize that if an application has a user interface that is unfriendly or difficult to use, it is probably going to sit on the shelf unused. Also, user interfaces using some type of windowing system are fast becoming a common feature of most computer systems. As a result, user tend to expect all application programs to have a professional, polished user friendly interface. Unfortunately, the Ada language has only rudimentary input and output (I/O) capabilities. As such, user interface programmers using Ada had to develop some other methods for anything except simple line or character input/output. This is not the case, however, for some other programming languages. The introduction of the X Window System in the mid 1980's changed the way user interfaces were developed in the language C. The X Window System, or X, is a collection (library) of subroutines that allows for the creation and manipulation of graphical user interfaces using multiple windows. These subroutines provide the mechanism to achieve the goals previously discussed.

A collection of some of the most significant literary work on the English Lake District prior to Thomas West’s A guide to the Lakes (1778). The poet Thomas Gray takes the reader from Brough south to Kendal on his return from a tour in Scotland. An agricultural reformer, Arthur Young, also returning from Scotland, begins his journey in the northern parts of Cumberland with dry descriptions of local farming, but on arriving in Keswick, his account turns to the picturesque scenery around Derwent Water, Ullswater and Windermere. ‘Wild and romantic’ is Young’s phrase, yet the agriculturalist in him comes to the fore as he declares the enclosed landscapes around Kendal and Windermere to be the most picturesque of all. Thomas Pennant’s account of his journey through the district is cursory, and he seems not have noticed the lakes or mountains at all. West’s Guide quotes Gray, Young and Pennant, and its second edition included the full text of Gray’s unpublished letters as an addendum. It also included four short pieces. John Brown’s letter to his former pupil William Gilpin (who would become the foremost exponent of the ‘picturesque’) connects the scenery of the Lakes to European landscape painting. Experimental philosopher Adam Walker provides a note on a local curiosity, the underground passages of Dunald Mill Hole.
