The FILE menu presents the UNIX file hierarchy that allows users to organize files into directories by subject (e.g. writing and programming). The PROGRAM menu presents UNIX programs in a hierarchy organized into workbenches according to the tasks for which they are used (e.g. writing and programming) much as files can be organized in directories. Special facilities are provided for: finding out about useful commands; using variables to set options, to save commands, and to avoid typing long strings; and for editing strings (including recent commands). This thesis examines the viability of a microcomputer based process which allows its terminal to become a terminal to become a terminal to a remote host which utilizes the UNIX operating system. The means of communication to the remote host is an Ethernet local area network. The preponderance of the software to accomplish the remote login is PL/I thus enabling the software to be utilized by any combination of computer/operating system that supports PL/I. The Ethernet driver makes use of assembly language in order to program the Ethernet Controller Board and is therefore dependent upon the underlying microprocessor. Although the communications medium is the Ethernet, ARPANET Internet and Transmission Control protocols are also utilized. This is necessitated by the manner in which the UNIX operating system's remote login process operates and allows the far more general case where the remote host is part of the ARPANET. (Author).

The specialized device interfaces for the University of Maryland Computer Vision Laboratory image acquisition and display equipment extend the capabilities of a PDP-11/45 hosting the UNIX operating system. The devices include the Grinnell GMR-27 color display processor, the other Computer Vision Laboratory display and scanning equipment, and the Digi-Data TM-11/TU-16 compatible tape drive. Subroutine packages give easy access to the interfaces from user programs, allowing full use of the special features. Programs using these subroutine packages and the well-designed UNIX operating system provide a flexible and powerful environment for image processing and program development. This report considers interprocess communication (IPC) facilities with the goal of developing an improved IPC capability for UNIX. A companion report outlines the major issues involved in providing IPC, describes the standard UNIX IPC facilities, and points out several of their weaknesses. The present report describes the 'port' mechanism developed at Rand to overcome some of those weaknesses. The Validation Summary Report presents the results and conclusions of testing performed on the Verdix Ada Development System (VADS), version 5.2. Standardized tests serve as input to an Ada compiler, producing results which are evaluated by the validation team. This summary briefly states the highlights of the VADS, Version 5.2, validation. The suite of tests known as the Ada Compiler Validation Capability (ACVC), Version 1.6, was used. The ACVC is used to validate conformance of a compiler to ANSI/MIL-STD-1815A Ada. The purpose of testing is to ensure that a compiler properly implements legal language constructs and that it identifies and rejects illegal language. The testing also identifies behavior that is implementation dependent but permitted by the Ada Standard. Six classes of tests are used. These tests are designed to perform checks at compile time, at link time, or during execution.

The user interface is a crucial, but often overlooked, part of the computer and software package. It is often the last thing designed. Short term memory aids and session pacing are two of the most important areas in which the machine can assist the user. Inclusion of a screen pointing device brings the computer closer to communicating on human terms. Basing the interface on a common metaphor, e.g. a desk top, can make it easy to learn and use. In this thesis three facets of the interface are examined. Communication from the machine, to the machine, and the dialog between user and machine. The Amiable interface designed for the UNIX operating system is described. Amiable is implemented on a SUN model 150 Workstation in the Naval Postgraduate School Computer Science Laboratory. Interface design is a hard problem, much remains to be done.

This thesis reports the results of an investigation of the applicability of paging and segmentation to memory management in modified UNIX operating systems on the PDP-11/50 minicomputer system at the Naval Postgraduate School Signal Processing and Display Laboratory. Two memory managers are specifically considered: a partitioned segmented memory manager that was designed and implemented; and a simpler, segmented memory manager that was designed based on the performance of the partitioned segmented memory manager. Recommendations are given for future work.

Lord Cochrane was a Napoleonic-era sea captain, whose adventures were the source material for many popular series of naval fiction. He started to write a biography but passed away after completing only two volumes. This work, co-authored by a naval historian and Cocharne's son, completes his "Autobiography of a Seaman". 5King's Son, Or, a Memoir of Billy Bray

Billy Bray, was an unconventional Cornish preacher. He was born in 1794 in the village of Twelveheads, Cornwall, England. After leaving school Billy Bray worked as a miner in Cornwall and Devon; during this time he was a drunkard and was prone to riotous behaviour. In 1823 he had a close escape from a mining accident, and later said that he was converted in November of that year through reading John Bunyan. He became attached to a group of Methodists known as the Bible Christians, and became a well-known but unconventional preacher; his sermons being enlivened by spontaneous outbursts of singing and dancing. He also raised enough funds to build three new Methodist chapels. Billy Bray died in 1868 and is buried at the parish church of Saint Michael and All Angels in Baldhu where his grave is marked by a granite obelisk. This Biography, by F. W.
