2Looking At The Eyes To Help: The Association Between Dwell Time In The Eyes Area And Prosocial Behavior

In order to help another in distress, we must recognize the other’s emotional state and regulate our own emotional state (Decety & Meyer, 2008). People tend to look mainly at the eyes and mouth to collect information regarding others' emotional states (Blais et al., 2012), but there is an individual difference in the pattern of scanning the faces (Guy et al., 2019). Perceiving others’ emotional states can also increase own arousal, and over-arousal often prohibits prosocial helping (Davidov et al., 2013). The aforementioned is based on studies mainly conducted with children and adults, but little is known about earlier in development, during toddlerhood. In the proposed study, 30-month-old toddlers will watch a video of a peer crying for 40 seconds while an eye-tracker is recording the gaze of the participant. Dwell time in the eyes and mouth areas of interest will be calculated. We aim to replicate findings from other stages of development in young toddlers and examine whether toddlers look predominantly at the eyes or the mouth to infer others' emotions. In addition, we predict that the ability to self-regulate interacts with the tendency to look at others’ eyes in predicting prosocial behavior

3The Relationship Between BOLD Sensitivity And Echo Time In The Human Spinal Cord

In BOLD-based fMRI, the time interval between tissue excitation and signal measurement (echo time, TE) is set to optimize the contrast between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, which is maximal at TE ≈ T2*. However, BOLD sensitivity is also influenced by additional TE-dependent factors, such as physiological noise, signal dropout and ratio of parenchymal to venous signal and optimal BOLD sensitivity might therefore not necessarily be observed at TE ≈ T2*. While the exact relationship between TE and BOLD sensitivity has been established in the brain, it is currently unknown in the spinal cord. In order to provide an empirical basis for choosing an optimal TE in spinal cord fMRI, we will measure task-induced spinal cord BOLD responses with fMRI across several different TEs. Our experimental design will furthermore allow us to assess the reliability of spinal cord BOLD responses across separate days and investigate spatial aspects of thermal stimulation.

4Associations Between Children's Screen Time And Psychosocial Adjustment During The Preschool And School Years In A Large Australian Cohort Study

Screen devices are omnipresent in children's home environment in majority of high-income countries. However, previous evidence suggests that the high amount of screen time in preschool children might have negative effects on cognitive skills, academic performance, behavioral and emotional problems among others (Christakis et al., 2004; Hinkley et al., 2014; Wu et al., 2016). Although a large number of studies suggests negative effects of screen time on children's psychosocial health, the majority of these studies are cross-sectional (Przybylsky et al., 2020; Wu et al., 2017; Zhao et al., 2018). Hence, the aim of this study is to longitudinally examine the effects of screen time in preschool children (4-5-years of age) on children's psychosocial adjustment at school age (10-11-years of age) focusing on the following: - Association between preschool children's screen time and concurrent psychosocial adjustment; - Association between preschool children's screen time and school age psychosocial adjustment; - Mediation of the association between children's screen time and psychosocial adjustment via home activities, out of home activities and extra curriculum activities.

8Comparison Between The Recovery Time Of Alfentanil And Fentanyl In Balanced Propofol Sedation For Gastrointestinal And Colonoscopy: A Prospective, Randomized Study.

This article is from BMC Gastroenterology , volume 12 . Abstract Background: There is increasing interest in balanced propofol sedation (BPS) titrated to moderate sedation (conscious sedation) for endoscopic procedures. However, few controlled studies on BPS targeted to deep sedation for diagnostic endoscopy were found. Alfentanil, a rapid and short-acting synthetic analog of fentanyl, appears to offer clinically significant advantages over fentanyl during outpatient anesthesia.It is reasonable to hypothesize that low dose of alfentanil used in BPS might also result in more rapid recovery as compared with fentanyl. Methods: A prospective, randomized and double-blinded clinical trial of alfentanil, midazolam and propofol versus fentanyl, midazolam and propofol in 272 outpatients undergoing diagnostic esophagogastroduodenal endoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy for health examination were enrolled. Randomization was achieved by using the computer-generated random sequence. Each combination regimen was titrated to deep sedation. The recovery time, patient satisfaction, safety and the efficacy and cost benefit between groups were compared. Results: 260 participants were analyzed, 129 in alfentanil group and 131 in fentanyl group. There is no significant difference in sex, age, body weight, BMI and ASA distribution between two groups. Also, there is no significant difference in recovery time, satisfaction score from patients, propofol consumption, awake time from sedation, and sedation-related cardiopulmonary complications between two groups. Though deep sedation was targeted, all cardiopulmonary complications were minor and transient (10.8%, 28/260). No serious adverse events including the use of flumazenil, assisted ventilation, permanent injury or death, and temporary or permanent interruption of procedure were found in both groups. However, fentanyl is New Taiwan Dollar (NT$) 103 (approximate US$ 4) cheaper than alfentanil, leading to a significant difference in total cost between two groups. Conclusions: This randomized, double-blinded clinical trial showed that there is no significant difference in the recovery time, satisfaction score from patients, propofol consumption, awake time from sedation, and sedation-related cardiopulmonary complications between the two most common sedation regimens for EGD and colonoscopy in our hospital. However, fentanyl is NT$103 (US$ 4) cheaper than alfentanil in each case. We consider the one-step prediction problem for discrete-time linear systems in correlated plant and observation noises, and non-Gaussian initial conditions. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the expected square Et of the difference between the MMSE and LMMSE (or Kalman) estimates of the state given past observations. We characterize the hrnit of the error seqnence {Et, t = 0,1,...) and obtain some related rates of convergence, with complete analysis being provided for the scalar case. The discussion is based on the explicit representations which were obtained by the authors in [ , ] for the MMSE and LMMSE estimates, and which explicitly display the dependence of these quantities on the initial distribution.

The main purpose of conducting this research study is to identify the impact of perceived crowding on emotional responses of the shoppers and identify the moderating effect of time of the day on the relationship between perceived crowding and emotional responses. And fast food industry in Sri Lanka has been taken as the research base to identify the fast food consumers’ perception on the crowding. Moreover, perceived crowding observed as a major concern for shoppers as well as a challenge for organizations which was also addressed in International context. That issue encouraged this particular study and it will be further examined and tested broadly throughout this research study. And the other concern is what types of moderating effect can be seen on the relationship between perceived crowding and emotional responses. Therefore, this research study has examined the effect of “time of the day” on the main relationship. A well-structured questionnaire was used to obtain primary data for the study. A total of 405 Sri Lankan fast food clients were chosen as the sample for the study. The sampling method was convenience sampling, and the data was analyzed using SPSS 25 software. The multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data. Charts and graphs are used to display the research findings. The study's findings demonstrated it can be concluded that it indicates that 12.2% of dependent variable (Emotional Responses) is explained by independent variables (Perceived Crowding). 17A Systematic Review Of The Relationship Between The Time Distribution And Substitution Of 24-hour Activities And Health-related Quality Of Life In Children And Adolescents

24 hours a day includes physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (sb) and sleep, collectively referred to as 24 activity behavior. Previous studies mostly studied the effect of single behavior on health in isolation. Health related quality of life (HRQOL) is a subjective multidimensional structure covering physical, psychological and social health. It is also widely used in the health evaluation of children and adolescents. In recent years, countries have successively issued 24h activity behavior guidelines, which recommend that children and adolescents spend ≥ 60 minutes a day on moderate to intense physical activity (MVPA) for ≥ 5 days a week, and limit recreational st to ≤ 2 hours/day, sleep 9 to 11 hours per night (5-13 years old) or 8 to 10 hours per night (14-18 years old) (5-7 years old). 24h activity behavior belongs to component data, and the sum is equal to 1440 minutes or 24 hours, with fixed sum limit. Compositional data analysis (coda) can remove the restriction of the sum of component data and make it suitable for traditional statistical methods. Research hotspots also emphasize the impact of various activities on health from an overall perspective. This study systematically reviewed the research on the relationship between 24-hour activity behavior and health related quality of life (HRQOL) of children and adolescents in recent ten years, and discussed the correlation and isochronal substitution benefits of different activity behavior combinations, in order to provide scientific evidence for children and adolescents to build a healthy lifestyle and promote healthy development

In BOLD-based fMRI, the time interval between tissue excitation and signal measurement (echo time, TE) is set to optimize the contrast between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, which is maximal at TE ≈ T2*. However, BOLD sensitivity is also influenced by additional TE-dependent factors, such as physiological noise, signal dropout and the ratio of parenchymal to venous signal and optimal BOLD sensitivity might therefore not necessarily be observed at TE ≈ T2*. While the exact relationship between TE and BOLD sensitivity has been established in the brain, it is currently unknown in the spinal cord. In order to provide an empirical basis for choosing an optimal TE in spinal cord fMRI, we will measure task-induced spinal cord BOLD responses with fMRI across several different TEs. Our experimental design will furthermore allow us to assess the reliability of spinal cord BOLD responses across separate days and investigate spatial aspects of thermal stimulation.

30Time Lag In Sgr A* Intra-Day Variability Between The Light Curves At 90 And 102 GHz

We performed the observation of the flux densities of Sgr A* at 90 and 102 GHz on 6 April 2005 using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array in order to detect the time lag between these frequencies. We constructed light curves covering a few hour with 1 min bin, and the Intra-Day Variability, which had a rising phase and intensity peak, of Sgr A* is clearly seen at both frequencies. We calculated the z-transformed discrete correlation function between the light curves of Sgr A* at 90 and 102 GHz. The derived time lag of the flares at these frequencies was approximately zero, contrary to our expectations based on the previously reported time lag at lower frequencies. If the radio flares of Sgr A* are explained by the expanding plasma model, the light curve at 90 GHz would be delayed with respect to the one at 102 GHz. However, we could not find such a delay with statistical significance in our data.

The empirical HOD model of Wang et al. 2006 fits, by construction, both the stellar mass function and correlation function of galaxies in the local Universe. In contrast, the semi-analytical models of De Lucia & Blazoit 2007 (DLB07) and Guo et al. 2011 (Guo11), built on the same dark matter halo merger trees than the empirical model, still have difficulties in reproducing these observational data simultaneously. We compare the relations between the stellar mass of galaxies and their host halo mass in the three models, and find that they are different. When the relations are rescaled to have the same median values and the same scatter as in Wang et al., the rescaled DLB07 model can fit both the measured galaxy stellar mass function and the correlation function measured in different galaxy stellar mass bins. In contrast, the rescaled Guo11 model still over-predicts the clustering of low-mass galaxies. This indicates that the detail of how galaxies populate the scatter in the stellar mass -- halo mass relation does play an important role in determining the correlation functions of galaxies. While the stellar mass of galaxies in the Wang et al. model depends only on halo mass and is randomly distributed within the scatter, galaxy stellar mass depends also on the halo formation time in semi-analytical models. At fixed value of infall mass, galaxies that lie above the median stellar mass -- halo mass relation reside in haloes that formed earlier, while galaxies that lie below the median relation reside in haloes that formed later. This effect is much stronger in Guo11 than in DLB07, which explains the over-clustering of low mass galaxies in Guo11. Our results illustrate that the assumption of random scatter in the relation between stellar and halo mass as employed by current HOD and abundance matching models may be problematic in case a significant assembly bias exists in the real Universe.

This project surveyed evening students enrolled in the Office of Occupations Division of the Houston Community College as to their opinions concerning the effectiveness of their instructor. Of the approximately 870 students enrolled, 236 students of "professional educators" responded, and 119 students of teachers who "worked full-time in the business world" responded. A five-point opinionnaire was used for instructor ratings to determine if exceptional ratings were dependent on teachers' full-time vocational classifications. The chi-square technique was used to analyze the data with a .05 confidence level. It was found that there was no significant difference, in the opinions of the students, between the effectiveness of professional educators and those who work in the business world. (Author/DB)

Currently, there are approximately 1.3 million annual high school dropouts who potentially might lose $355 billion of income over their lifetimes. Effectively addressing retention and dropout issues has far-reaching societal implications. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between ninth-grade retention and on-time graduation. For the purposes of this study, on-time graduation was defined as completion of high school within four years after entering as freshmen. A convenience method of sampling was utilized to measure ninth-grade retention and dropout rates among students (n = 1,202) in a Southeast Texas high school. A chi-square analysis determined the relationship between the variables. The findings indicated a statistically significant relationship between ninth-grade retention and on-time graduation, yielding a very large effect size (Cramer's V = 0.61). Specifically, ninth-grade students who had been retained were more than six times less likely not to graduate on time than were the ninth-grade students who had not been retained. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Recent theoretical work on the role of microscopic chaos in the dynamics and relaxation of many-body quantum systems has made several experimentally confirmed predictions about the systems of interacting nuclear spins in solids, focusing, in particular, on the shapes of spin echo responses measured by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). These predictions were based on the idea that the transverse nuclear spin decays evolve in a manner governed at long times by the slowest decaying eigenmode of the quantum system, analogous to a chaotic resonance in a classical system. The present paper extends the above investigations both theoretically and experimentally. On the theoretical side, the notion of chaotic eigenmodes is used to make predictions about the relationships between the long-time oscillation phase of the nuclear free induction decay (FID) and the amplitudes and phases of spin echoes. On the experimental side, the above predictions are tested for the nuclear spin decays of F-19 in CaF2 crystals and Xe-129 in frozen xenon. Good agreement between the theory and the experiment is found.

There is a certain consensus that the very fast growth of the relaxation time $\tau$ occurring in glass-forming liquids on lowering the temperature must be due to the thermally activated rearrangement of correlated regions of growing size. Even though measuring the size of these regions has defied scientists for a while, there is indeed recent evidence of a growing correlation length $\xi$ in glass-formers. If we use Arrhenius law and make the mild assumption that the free-energy barrier to rearrangement scales as some power $\psi$ of the size of the correlated regions, we obtain a relationship between time and length, $T\log\tau \sim \xi^\psi$. According to both the Adam-Gibbs and the Random First Order theory the correlation length grows as $\xi \sim (T-T_k)^{-1/(d-\theta)}$, even though the two theories disagree on the value of $\theta$. Therefore, the super-Arrhenius growth of the relaxation time with the temperature is regulated by the two exponents $\psi$ and $\theta$ through the relationship $T\log\tau \sim (T-T_k)^{-\psi/(d-\theta)}$. Despite a few theoretical speculations, up to now there has been no experimental determination of these two exponents. Here we measure them numerically in a model glass-former, finding $\psi=1$ and $\theta=2$. Surprisingly, even though the values we found disagree with most previous theoretical suggestions, they give back the well-known VFT law for the relaxation time, $T\log\tau \sim (T-T_k)^{-1}$.

This study explores the relationship between subjective time perception and the sense of agency during joint actions involving both human-human and human-computer pairs. Participants will use individual force feedback devices to press buttons in a virtual environment. After each button press, a brief delay precedes an auditory tone, and participants are asked to estimate the duration of this delay. Three experimental conditions are used: (1) participants control their own pointer independently; (2) participants share control with a computer, with the computer guiding the pointer toward a button in a mechanistic and uncompromising manner; and (3) participants jointly control a single pointer in the same environment. Naturalistic physical feedback is provided so participants can feel the button press as well as the influence of their partner—human or computer—on the movement. At the end of the experiment, participants complete a questionnaire assessing their subjective sense of control in each condition. The primary aim is to investigate how different forms joint control relate to the reported sense of agency and to the intentional binding effect. It is hypothesized that actions performed individually compared to actions performed with a dominating artificial partner (i.e. one that has overwhelming influence over the action outcome) will reflect the typical contrast between intentional and non-intentional actions in terms of reported sense of agency and temporal binding. Additionally, it is expected that joint action with a human partner will produce a weaker binding effect than solo action, but a stronger effect than joint action with a computer partner. In the human-human joint control condition, participants’ subjective reports of agency are expected to vary. We hypothesize that participants who report a stronger sense of agency will also exhibit stronger intentional binding effects. We show new data from the $^{64}$Ni+$^{124}$Sn and $^{58}$Ni+$^{112}$Sn reactions studied in direct kinematics with the CHIMERA detector at INFN-LNS and compared with the reverse kinematics reactions at the same incident beam energy (35 A MeV). Analyzing the data with the method of relative velocity correlations, fragments coming from statistical decay of an excited projectile-like (PLF) or target-like (TLF) fragments are discriminated from the ones coming from dynamical emission in the early stages of the reaction. By comparing data of the reverse kinematics experiment with a stochastic mean field (SMF) + GEMINI calculations our results show that observables from neck fragmentation mechanism add valuable constraints on the density dependence of symmetry energy. An indication is found for a moderately stiff symmetry energy potential term of EOS.

This article is from BMC Infectious Diseases , volume 11 . Abstract Background: In 2010, intense focus was brought to bear on febrile convulsions in Australian children particularly in relation to influenza vaccination. Febrile convulsions are relatively common in infants and can lead to hospital admission and severe outcomes. We aimed to examine the relationships between the population incidence of febrile convulsions and influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) seasonal epidemics in children less than six years of age in Sydney Australia using routinely collected syndromic surveillance data and to assess the feasibility of using this data to predict increases in population rates of febrile convulsions. Methods: Using two readily available sources of routinely collected administrative data; the NSW Emergency Department (ED) patient management database (1 January 2003 - 30 April 2010) and the Ambulance NSW dispatch database (1 July 2006 - 30 April 2010), we used semi-parametric generalized additive models (GAM) to determine the association between the population incidence rate of ED presentations and urgent ambulance dispatches for 'convulsions', and the population incidence rate of ED presentations for 'influenza-like illness' (ILI) and 'bronchiolitis' - proxy measures of influenza and RSV circulation, respectively. Results: During the study period, when the weekly all-age population incidence of ED presentations for ILI increased by 1/100,000, the 0 to 6 year-old population incidence of ED presentations for convulsions increased by 6.7/100,000 (P < 0.0001) and that of ambulance calls for convulsions increased by 3.2/100,000 (P < 0.0001). The increase in convulsions occurred one week earlier relative to the ED increase in ILI. The relationship was weaker during the epidemic of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza virus.When the 0 to 3 year-old population incidence of ED presentations for bronchiolitis increased by 1/100,000, the 0 to 6 year-old population incidence of ED presentations for convulsions increased by 0.01/100,000 (P < 0.01). We did not find a meaningful and statistically significant association between bronchiolitis and ambulance calls for convulsions. Conclusions: Influenza seasonal epidemics are associated with a substantial and statistically significant increase in the population incidence of hospital attendances and ambulance dispatches for reported febrile convulsions in young children. Monitoring syndromic ED and ambulance data facilitates rapid surveillance of reported febrile convulsions at a population level.

In His Famous Work Al-Fatawa Al-Hindiyyah Volume 1, Page 15 States The Following Ruling: “And Penetrating An Animal Or A Dead Body And A Child That Cannot Bear Penetration Does Not Make Ghusl Obligatory If He Does Not Ejaculate As Mentioned In Al-Muhit, But The Correct Opinion Is That If He Is Able To Penetrate The Small Child In The Place Of Intercourse And Does Not Cause Her Ifdhaa (i.e. Tearing The Tissue Between Vagina And Anus And Making Them One Canal), Then She Counts As A Woman That Can Bear Intercourse As It Is Mentioned In Al-Siraj Al-Wahhaj”. "Those Scenarios Wherein An Obligatory Bath Is Not Required At Page 119: 4. If Person Has Sexual Intercourse With A Minor Girl, Ghusul (Bath) Will Not Become Obligatory On Her. But In Order To Get Her Into The Habit, She Should Be Made To Bath. Hanafi Work, Fatwa Alamgiri: “If Someone Marries Five Women At A Time Or Marries A Fifth Woman While Already Having Four Wives Or Marries His Sister In Law Or Mother In Law And Then Performs Intercourse With Her And Then Says That I Knew That It Is Haram For Me Or Performs Nikah Al Mutah With A Woman Then There Will Be No Plenty Of Adultery On Him In All Of These Situations Though He Confessed That He Knew It Was Haram On Him” Al Bidaya: “One Day ‘Ali Attacked Amr Ibn Aas, He Threw A Spear And Amr Fell To The Ground, Amr Fell To The Ground And He Then Exposed His Buttocks. ‘Ali Then Turned Away His Face [people Said] This Was Amr Bin Aas. ‘Ali Replied He Showed Me His Anus And This Made Me Merciful To Him. When Amr Ibn Aas Returned, Mu’awiya Said ‘You Should Praise Allah And Your Anus”. People Asked ‘How Do You Know?’ I Replied ‘When A Man Dies His Anus Goes Cold, And I Have Made This Comment In Light Of This Fact, Verily He Is Alive’. Robert van Bergen was one of the first Americans to enter Japan after the country opened its borders to foreign visitors following centuries of isolation. He taught English to Japanese aristocrats, eventually becoming principal of the Nobles' School in Tokyo. This book, which he wrote for young readers during his stay in the country, was first published in 1897. It includes many illustrations.<br><br> From the preface: "Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written.
