The rise in recent years of right wing, so-called strongmen leaders - from Donald Trump in the United States, to Viktor Orban in Hungary and Narendra Modi in India - has fuelled fears that liberal values are under attack around the world.Now as millions of Americans head to the polls, many worry a second term for Trump would put democracy under serious threat in the US.But are those fears overblown? Instead, his improvement steadily escalated. So in 2011, he went completely vegan. And believe it or not, he has accomplished all of these extraordinary, superhuman feats without the one thing long-held conventional wisdom dictates is absolutely necessary to optimally perform as an elite strength athlete: animal protein.I first met Patrik at the 2013 at the Toronto VegFest, where I stood on the WestJet Stage at Harbourfront Centre before a crowd 1,000 deep to cheer him towards a Guinness World Record setting yoke walk - a feat that entailed carrying 1,216 pounds (550kilos) a distance of 10 meters in less than 60 seconds (which he recently bettered to a current 560kg world record, completed in just 28 seconds). Under what conditions can women navigate the hypermasculine stereotypes associated with charismatic leadership to establish unmediated emotional bonds with their followers? This study argues that the pathway through which women achieve charismatic attachments with voters is distinct from that of men. Drawing on theories of charisma, systems justification, and role congruity, I theorize that men are more likely to establish charismatic bonds by rising independently, while women are more likely to do so by emphasizing a genuine familial linkage with a charismatic man predecessor—e.g., as wife, daughter, or sister—to underscore their complementary feminine role. Consequently, while ordinarily disadvantaged by the hypermasculine nature of charismatic leadership, women relatives may have an advantage over men in contexts of charismatic succession because they can more credibly claim to serve as the intimate complement and mouthpiece of their heroic predecessor. I evaluate this theory in Peru, where two children of charismatic leader Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000)—his daughter, Keiko, and his son, Kenji—have attempted to claim his mantle of authority. Both siblings have served in Congress and have played active roles in the Popular Front (Frente Popular—FP), a Fujimorista-affiliated party Keiko founded in 2009. Moreover, Keiko has run for president in the past three elections, each time narrowly missing a majority of votes, while Kenji has expressed interest in running in future elections. I leverage this context to investigate the influence of leaders’ gender, family ties, and strategic performance of gender stereotypes on movement followers’ perceptions of the leaders’ charisma. First, I conduct an observational analysis to shed light on the strategies adopted by Keiko and Kenji over the course of their political careers to grapple with their father’s legacy and attempt to establish charismatic appeal. Second, I [propose to] implement a randomized survey experiment to parse out and evaluate the influence of gender and family ties on followers’ perceptions of candidates’ charisma. To enhance internal validity, the experiment focuses on Fujimori’s remaining two children, daughter Sachi and son Hiro. While sharing a genuine family tie to Alberto Fujimori with their siblings, Keiko and Kenji, Sachi and Hiro are far less politically active and thus have less information associated with their profiles. The results will shed light on the influence of gender and family ties on candidate charisma in contexts of political succession.

With just weeks away from the big contest that our Everyday Strongmen (and women) have been training for, we wanted to get in touch with the organizer of the Stoughton Viking Games to learn more about how the contest came about and what the contestants and spectators can expect from this challenging competition. Tim Strandlie shares with us how he became interested in strongman games and how that passion eventually lead to him reaching out to the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce and creating the Viking Games. He also fills us in on how the contests are chosen and why he loves encouraging others to compete, but refrains from doing so himself. Overall, these games bring about a sense of community, are always a highlight of the Syttende Mai Festival and seem to keep growing year over year. This year the Festival runs May 19th through the 21st, with the games taking place in the afternoon on Saturday, May 20th, 2017.
