We report unexpected features of the transport in the dielectric spin density wave (SDW) phase of the quasi one-dimensional compound (TMTSF)_2PF_6: the resistance exhibits a maximum and a subsequent strong drop as temperature decreases below approximately 2K. The maximum in R(T) is not caused by depinning or Joule heating of the SDW. The characteristic temperature of the R(T) maximum and the scaling behavior of the resistance at different magnetic fields B evidence that the non-monotonic R(T) dependence has an origin different from the one known for the quantum Hall effect region of the phase diagram. We also found that the borderline T_0(B,P) which divides the field induced SDW region of the P-B-T phase diagram into the hysteresis and non-hysteresis domains, terminates in the N=1 sub-phase; the borderline has thus no extension to the SDW N=0 phase.

A short review is presented of a recently developed computational approach which allows the study of the resistance noise over the full range of bias values, from the linear regime up to electrical breakdown. Resistance noise is described in terms of two competing processes in a random resistor network. The two processes are thermally activated and driven by an electrical bias. In the linear regime, a scaling relation has been found between the relative variance of resistance fluctuations and the average resistance. The value of the critical exponent is significantly higher than that associated with 1/f noise. In the nonlinear regime, occurring when the bias overcomes the threshold value, the relative variance of resistance fluctuations scales with the bias. Two regions can be identified in this regime: a moderate bias region and a pre-breakdown one. In the first region, the scaling exponent has been found independent of the values of the model parameters and of the bias conditions. A strong nonlinearity emerges in the pre-breakdown region which is also characterized by non-Gaussian noise. The results compare well with measurements of electrical breakdown in composites and with electromigration experiments in metallic lines.

The non-linear zero-differential resistance state (ZDRS) that occurs for highly mobile two-dimensional electron systems in response to a dc bias in the presence of a strong magnetic field applied perpendicular to the electron plane is suppressed and disappears gradually as the magnetic field is tilted away from the perpendicular at fixed filling factor $\nu$. Good agreement is found with a model that considers the effect of the Zeeman splitting of Landau levels enhanced by the in-plane component of the magnetic field.

We show that the size effects radically affect the electric field-current ($E-I$) relation of superconducting films. We calculate $E(J)$ due to thermally-activated hopping of single vortices driven by current $I$ across the film in a magnetic field $H$, taking into account interaction of free vortices with their antivortex images and peaks in the Meissner currents at the film edges. Unbinding of virtual vortex-antivortex pairs not only mimics the transport uniform BKT behavior, it can dominate the observed $E(J)$ and result in the field-dependent ohmic resistance at small $I$. We show that $E(I)$ can be tuned by changing the film geometry and propose experimental tests of this theory.

Examining how the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) has responded to external threats over the past 50 years, this book provides a compelling account of regional state actions and foreign policy in the face of potential sovereignty violation. The author draws on a large amount of previously unanalysed material, including declassified government documents and WikiLeaks cables, to examine four key cases since 1975. Taking into account state interests and the role of external powers, the author develops the ‘vanguard state theory’ to explain ASEAN state responses to sovereignty violation, which, it is argued, has universal applicability and explanatory power.

The effects of grazing flow on the steady state flow resistance and acoustic impedance of seven Feltmetal and three Rigimesh thin porous faced liners were studied. The steady-state flow resistance of the ten specimens was measured using standard fluid mechanical experimental techniques. The acoustic impedance was measured using the two microphone method. The principal findings of the study are that the effects of grazing flow were measured and found to be small; small differences were measured between steady-state and acoustic resistance, and a semi-empirical model was derived that correlated the steady-state resistance data of the seven Feltmetal liners and the face sheet reactance of both the Feltmetal and Rigimesh liners.

Direct shear (DS) tests with controlled shear rates were performed in two soils from the Baixada Fluminense region, in the city of São João do Meriti – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first soil characterized as Inorganic Clay of high plasticity (CH) was located in a hillside region. The second soil characterized as medium plasticity clay (CL) was located in a central region of the studied area with a slight slope. The soils in question are deposited on non-compacted soft soil with the addition of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Both samples of compacted soil were excavated at a depth of 1.0 m, and undisturbed samples were collected. In addition to the previously mentioned tests, oedometric tests and soil physical classification tests were carried out to evaluate geotechnical parameters. In both tests the shear rate of 0.043 mm / min was adopted. The tests presented coherent results with probabilistic accuracy greater than 95% inreliability compared to three tests with compacted tropical soils.

Innovations create new possibilities for the welfare state. Digital technologies, however, can create a range of surprising and unintended effects. Lost in Digital Translations: Studies of Digital Resistance and Accommodation to the Welfare State in Practice is an exploration of what happens when digital technologies intersect with welfare state practices. This book seeks to develop a creative critique of digital welfare. Digitalising welfare runs the risk of undermining or suppressing knowledge dimensions that are central in the distribution of welfare – in short, knowledge can be ‘lost in digital translation’. The universal welfare state is intended for all citizens. By sensitizing us to what is lost in digital translation, we are made aware of some of the exclusionary mechanisms that impact our digital society. In this anthology a group of researchers investigate how digitalisation influences the most ambitious welfare state in the world: Norway. Given Norway’s extensive welfare system, the process of digitalisation has had a profound impact. Digital technologies are used to enhance cooperation and coordination between health trusts and municipalities, standardizing communication between frontline workers and citizens, and even altering the architectural design of public buildings, all of which influences the quality of welfare services. At the same time, patient security is endangered, vulnerable groups experience even more exclusion from society, and for others, the quality of welfare deteriorates.

Electrical transport and broadband resistance noise measurements in an ultra low frequency window (30 mHz - 8 Hz) are carried out in single nanoribbon devices of charge density wave (CDW) conductor NbSe$_{3}$. In the temperature and electric field range where the CDW is expected to be completed pinned by residual impurities, a hitherto unseen non-monotonic behavior in the noise magnitude vs. electric field is observed. This behavior can be attributed to the proliferation of thermally activated phase slip events and this idea is supported by the observation of a smeared activated behavior described by the Dutta-Horn relation. Certain features of the temperature dependence of the noise magnitude do not follow an activated behavior pointing to a complex origin of the fluctuations in a CDW system.

This study draws from narrative research, wherein stories of individuals, groups, and communities are central to the interpretation. Through a process of interpretive interactionism, the author examined the groups and institutions involved in the ongoing conflict between the state and public education in Oaxaca, and then included comparisons and contrasts to the current struggle in Wisconsin. Moreover, the very public nature of the rebellion in Oaxaca and Wisconsin lends itself to the interpretation of these struggles as performance events. This article begins with a discussion of narrative inquiry as a tool to select sites for participant observation and to interview teachers, administrators, and others involved in those sites. Through interviews, participant observation, and library research, the author compared teacher preparation as well as current attempts to undermine traditional preparation in both states, Oaxaca and Wisconsin. What follows is a brief history of public education and teacher preparation in Oaxaca and Wisconsin, especially focusing on the polarizing events of 2006, when teachers and their supporters took over the city of Oaxaca and were only driven out by the Mexican army, and events in February and March of 2011 in Wisconsin, when mass resistance developed to the Republican effort to remove collective bargaining rights for state public employees. Through library and internet research, the author examined the conflicts between states, teachers, and public schools as they have developed in Oaxaca and Wisconsin, especially in the past five years. School funding is discussed, as well as current attempts to support private education with public funds. Finally, the struggle for better schools and better working conditions is highlighted, along with the importance of building networks of solidarity that cross state and international boundaries.

Normal-state resistance data from Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 single crystals were fitted to the (bi)polaronic conduction model, $R=R_0 (T+\sigma_b T^2)/(1+bT)$, with satisfactory agreement over a wide temperature range. The fluctuating conduction region is found to be much narrower than that in the usual sense, as is the case for a charged Bose-gas. We estimate the effective (bi)polaron mass to be ~ 4m_e.

The transport properties of La$_{1.89}$Ce$_{0.11}$CuO$_{4}$(LCCO) and La$_{1.89}$Ce$_{0.11}$(Cu$_{0.99}$Co$_{0.01}$)O$_{4}$ (LCCO:Co) superconducting thin films are investigated. When the external field $\bf H$ is applied along the crystallographic c-axis, a double sign reversal of the Hall voltage in the mixed state of LCCO:Co thin films is observed whereas a single sign reversal is detected in LCCO. A double sign reversal of the Hall signal in LCCO can be recovered if the magnetic field is tilted away from the plane of the film. We find that the transition from one to two of the Hall sign reversal coincides with the change in the pinning from strong to weak. We report on electronic transport measurements in $La_2NiO_{4.14}$. Non-Ohmic and hysteretic $V(I)$ curves are measured for $T \lesssim$ 220 $K$. Large and non Gaussian resistance fluctuations can be observed, with strong cooling rate dependence. During a slow cooling, the resistance reaches plateaus and then suddenly jumps for $T \lesssim$ 100 $K$, evidencing a macroscopic freezing of the charges. Anti-correlation between time-series of orthogonal resistances is also observed. These results are discussed in the framework of the stripes state scenario.

Strategy employed to avoid community resistance involved: (1) an intensive literature review; (2) use of a stratified cluster sample to permit a representative sample at a minimum cost and eliminate the possibility of creating the impression that only certain residents were chosen; (3) development of a non-threatening title for the study via elimination of words such as "poor", "black people", etc.; (4) preliminary visits to local officials explaining the research project; (5) a pretest to determine whether local or outside interviewers were better received (results indicated outsiders were more successful, but tensions prevented whites from applying). Survey success was attributed primarily to: (1) use of the cluster sampling technique; (2) use of the observational survey; and (3) completing all interviews within one day or less. (JC)
