The Glendale Unified School District will be monitoring 13,000 students at 8 middle and high schools. According to the superintendent, the service will monitor for keywords to see if a student is considering harming themselves or harming someone else. Will programs like this encourage students to become even more apathetic to government spying when they are adults? This week, we cover Sorge's career in Tokyo, and explore just how he was able to convince so many people that he was exactly what he was not -- a loyal Nazi here to report on Japan for the benefit of Hitler's regime. Plus, some thoughts on Sorge's significance in the history of the Second World War. Show notes here.

We present results from our ongoing follow-up observations of double white dwarf binaries detected in the ESO SN Ia Progenitor SurveY (SPY). We discuss our observing strategy and data analysis and present the orbital solutions of five close double white dwarf binaries: HE0320-1917, HE1511-0448, WD0326-273, WD1013-010 and WD1210+140. Their periods range from 0.44 to 3.22 days. In none of these systems we find any spectral lines originating from the companion. This rules out main sequence companions and indicates that the companion white dwarfs are significantly older and cooler than the bright component. Infrared photometry suggests the presence of a cool, helium-rich white dwarf companion in the binary WD0326-273. We briefly discuss the consequences of our findings for our understanding of the formation and evolution of double white dwarfs.

An alert literary scavenger named Ladislas Farago dug a tin box of German intel- ligence papers out of the Na- tional Archives, and recycled them into a bestseller: The Game of the Foxes. The book, an almost day-to-day account of German agents at work in Britain and the U.S. during World War II, is a stunning proof of the incredible cost and even more incredible in- efficiency of most espionage networks. Of the many Ab- ,,vehr agents smuggled into England, fot example, not one was still operating at the . time of the Normandy in- vasion in 1944. Diaries are negotiable cur- rency, too. Episode 5 of season 3 of this obscure teen drama. All season 2 and 3 episodes are from the Japanese DVD set(the first volume is weirdly enough called season 2 despite having both seasons 1 and 2 on it), unfortunately many episodes are lacking their end credits(only half the episodes on each set have them for some odd reason)and the few that do have end credits have a completely different ending theme song by some J-pop band(which plays even if you choose the English audio option, it's OK but I prefer the English ending theme, interestingly enough there's also a seperate Japanese dub for the show which is said to be absolutely terrible according to reviews on Amazon JP). Despite those minor annoyances i'm glad at least someone respected this show enough to give it a full series DVD release, so enjoy!
