The patterns created by dark spots on defrosting south polar dunes are often strange and beautiful. This picture, which the Mars Orbiter Camera team has dubbed, "the snow leopard," shows a dune field located at 61.5S, 18.9W, as it appeared on July 1, 1999. The spots are areas where dark sand has been exposed from beneath bright frost as the south polar winter cap begins to retreat. Many of the spots have a diffuse, bright ring around them this is thought to be fresh frost that was re-precipitated after being removed from the dark spot. The spots seen on defrosting polar dunes are a new phenomenon that was not observed by previous spacecraft missions to Mars. Thus, there is much about these features that remains unknown. A mother snow leopard and her two kittens were recently caught on camera at the Altai Nature Reserve in western Siberia — with one of the curious kittens even knocking the camera over. Ecologists say that such high-quality footage of snow leopard kittens in the wild has never been captured before. Just 65 of these endangered and extremely secretive animals live in Russia, or about 2% of the global population. The pudgy furballs love nothing more than to go on mini adventures in their playground at Magdeburg Zoo, and not even their mother was able to curb their curious mischievousness. We saw them nudge around a soccer ball, dip their huge, snowshoe-like paws into bowls of water, and tinkle on the clinic floor (somehow even that was cute). To top it off they are the official symbol of the Girl Scout Association of Kyrgyzstan. We bet they really like their cookies! Experts estimate that there are only between 3500-7000 snow leopards left in the wild... Mongolia's Snow Leopard Enterprises is an income-generation project that helps people living in poverty increase their standard of living, and at the same time protect their local ecosystems. They provide women across Central Asia with the training and equipment necessary to produce hand-made felt and other wool products, which are sold internationally through the Snow Leopard Trust and other venues. This provides the herding communities with an alternative income and helps to prevent the poaching of endangered snow leopards for survival. The Snow Leopard Enterprises project has been running in Mongolia since 1997. In that time it has grown to include over 350 households from 28 communities in seven different provinces of the mountainous west and desert south of the country.
