This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 9 . Abstract The endangered snow leopard is a large felid that is distributed over 1.83 million km2 globally. Throughout its range it relies on a limited number of prey species in some of the most inhospitable landscapes on the planet where high rates of human persecution exist for both predator and prey. We reviewed 14 published and 11 unpublished studies pertaining to snow leopard diet throughout its range. We calculated prey consumption in terms of frequency of occurrence and biomass consumed based on 1696 analysed scats from throughout the snow leopard's range. Prey biomass consumed was calculated based on the Ackerman's linear correction factor. We identified four distinct physiographic and snow leopard prey type zones, using cluster analysis that had unique prey assemblages and had key prey characteristics which supported snow leopard occurrence there. Levin's index showed the snow leopard had a specialized dietary niche breadth. The main prey of the snow leopard were Siberian ibex (Capra sibrica), blue sheep (Pseudois nayaur), Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus), argali (Ovis ammon) and marmots (Marmota spp). The significantly preferred prey species of snow leopard weighed 55±5 kg, while the preferred prey weight range of snow leopard was 36–76 kg with a significant preference for Siberian ibex and blue sheep. Our meta-analysis identified critical dietary resources for snow leopards throughout their distribution and illustrates the importance of understanding regional variation in species ecology; particularly prey species that have global implications for conservation.

The patterns created by dark spots on defrosting south polar dunes are often strange and beautiful. This picture, which the Mars Orbiter Camera team has dubbed, "the snow leopard," shows a dune field located at 61.5S, 18.9W, as it appeared on July 1, 1999. The spots are areas where dark sand has been exposed from beneath bright frost as the south polar winter cap begins to retreat. Many of the spots have a diffuse, bright ring around them this is thought to be fresh frost that was re-precipitated after being removed from the dark spot. The spots seen on defrosting polar dunes are a new phenomenon that was not observed by previous spacecraft missions to Mars. Thus, there is much about these features that remains unknown. For example, no one yet knows why the dunes become defrosted by forming small spots that grow and grow over time. No one knows for sure if the bright rings around the dark spots are actually composed of re-precipitated frost. And no one knows for sure why some dune show spots that appear to be "lined-up" (as they do in the picture shown here). A unique conservation effort has helped bring the elusive snow leopard back and given hope to one of the poorest and most isolated communities on earth. Snow leopards are making a comeback in a picturesque corner of Afghanistan, high in the Hindu Kush mountain range.Scientists who have been tracking the shy leopards estimate there are up to 140 cats in the Wakhan National Park, established two years ago across 1 million square hectares.The Wildlife Conservation Society says that's a healthy and sustainable number....other species like the Siberian ibex and golden marmot - the leopards' main prey - are also doing well.The WCS scientists have learned the big cats range widely.They mark their territory by spraying and scratching the ground, but unlike their distant relative - the house cat - they don't mind getting wet.Snow leopard numbers have declined in recent decades as hunters sought their spotted pelts and farmers killed them to protect livestock.Now they appear to be thriving, thanks to conservation efforts in Wakhan.Only around 100 visitors reach Wakhan every year...the area's poverty and isolation has insulated it from decades of war, but has also deterred all but the most adventurous travelers.The hope is that Wakhan can one day rival Afghanistan's only other national park, in the central Bamiyan province, which attracts thousands of tourists each year.For the AP, I'm SH from the Rivet World Desk.

They provide women across Central Asia with the training and equipment necessary to produce hand-made felt and other wool products, which are sold internationally through the Snow Leopard Trust and other venues. This provides the herding communities with an alternative income and helps to prevent the poaching of endangered snow leopards for survival. The Snow Leopard Enterprises project has been running in Mongolia since 1997. In that time it has grown to include over 350 households from 28 communities in seven different provinces of the mountainous west and desert south of the country. We visited a family of snow leopards and immediately fell in love with the little, pudgy cubs. For more fluffy awesomeness, paw at this link: [URL REMOVED] There's nothing better than watching newborn animals curiously explore the world around them. How can your eyes not be glued to all the digging, pouncing, sniffing, falling, and those wide eyes that are too big for their heads. So you can only imagine what it was like when we made friends with a few baby snow leopards in Germany—they were like kittens on special steroids that multiply cuddleability by a factor of 10. The pudgy furballs love nothing more than to go on mini adventures in their playground at Magdeburg Zoo, and not even their mother was able to curb their curious mischievousness. We saw them nudge around a soccer ball, dip their huge, snowshoe-like paws into bowls of water, and tinkle on the clinic floor (somehow even that was cute). To top it off they are the official symbol of the Girl Scout Association of Kyrgyzstan. We bet they really like their cookies!
