In the 21st century, the United States will increasingly rely on cyberspace to advance its national interests within a strategic environment characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. Concurrently, our adversaries are afforded increased opportunities to undermine our efforts by conducting a broad spectrum of nefarious activities in the digital domain. While not all of their acts will pose a direct and imminent threat to the nation s security, some will. Given these challenges, cyber strategists, government leaders, and scholars frequently disagree over whether the U.S. should establish thresholds (or red lines) for using military power when responding to hostile acts in cyberspace against government computer networks. This paper argues that delineating indistinct vice ambiguous or distinct red lines for hostile acts in cyberspace will better protect U.S. government networks and provide policymakers and military leaders ample flexibility to tailor response options in the same manner they are developed for threats in the other global domains.

Clausewitz's notion of the culminating point is strongly endorsed in US military doctrinal manuals. While the concept appears valid, few sources offer clues on how the operational commander is to identify the culminating point except, perhaps, in retrospect. Identifying that point as it happens could signal the military leader if and when he has lost or won the fight. This study determined that absent any practical advice, one has to revert to theory to deduce an answer. Clausewitz says there are three means of determining victory: the enemy's greater loss of material strength, his loss of morale, and his admission of giving up his intentions. The first falls in the physical domain of combat, the second lies in the moral domain, and the third is a function of initiative. Determining victory or defeat, therefore, is both an art and a science. Several historical accounts of operational culminating points are analyzed to see how that point could be identified. It also appears that the loser is the side which invariably sends the signs of the culminating point. The point is extremely difficult to see (and my never be accurately determined), but using the indicators discussed, the commander and his staff should plan for, anticipate, create, and capitalize upon the culminating point of victory. They need to anticipate the culminating point before the battle, but they also must seek it as the battle ensues. (AN)

We derive an analytic expression for the transitional column density value ($s_t$) between the lognormal and power-law form of the probability distribution function (PDF) in star-forming molecular clouds. Our expression for $s_t$ depends on the mean column density, the variance of the lognormal portion of the PDF, and the slope of the power-law portion of the PDF. We show that $s_t$ can be related to physical quantities such as the sonic Mach number of the flow and the power-law index for a self-gravitating isothermal sphere. This implies that the transition point between the lognormal and power-law density/column density PDF represents the critical density where turbulent and thermal pressure balance, the so-called "post-shock density." We test our analytic prediction for the transition column density using dust PDF observations reported in the literature as well as numerical MHD simulations of self-gravitating supersonic turbulence with the Enzo code. We find excellent agreement between the analytic $s_t$ and the measured values from the numerical simulations and observations (to within 1.5 A$_V$). We discuss the utility of our expression for determining the properties of the PDF from unresolved low density material in dust observations, for estimating the post-shock density, and for determining the HI-H$_2$ transition in clouds.

We review theoretical models of the early stages of star formation, in which gravitational collapse is strongly regulated by magnetic fields and the associated process of ambipolar diffusion. We discuss results of numerical simulations and analytical studies of core formation and collapse, which can be directly tested against observation. We also focus on recent data which are relevant to this theory of star formation, such as: observations of extended infall in protostellar cores, estimates of evolutionary timescales ~ 1 Myr for cores, measured mass-to-flux ratios of cores, and the relative alignment of polarization vectors with apparent cloud elongation. It is shown that in all of these areas, the data lie within the observationally allowable range of parameter space. Other areas of interest (protostellar accretion rates and the presence of core edges) and issues that remain unresolved or under study (the role of non-thermal motions and cluster formation) are also discussed. Moreover, we highlight some differences between our model predictions and those of highly turbulent star formation models, and discuss how these differences can be distinguished observationally.

"The Razor's Edge" was a Dallas/Ft Worth public affairs program that ran on cable access for ages.. Each week, the host (Roy Williams) would interview local politicians, school board councilpersons, store owners, and assorted other boring guests.. There was no "edge" to the program, except for whenever technical glitches and mishaps, Roy's upbeat attitude would swiftly plummet and Mr. Roy would get the grumps.. At this particular public access studio (the former TCI Cablevision Of Dallas, later DCTV, and finally  Dallas iMedia until it was hatefully murdered like Katie Vick).. if you wanted to book the studio to film your own program, you would have to take several classes first. You would take a class in camera operation, then move onto sound, then lights.. After passing all courses, THEN AND ONLY THEN, would you be allowed to book the studio for your own personal gain!!As you took the classes, you would be required (forced) to learn on the job, helping others with their programs. This, of course meant, that every program was produced by total amateurs.. And judging from the production qualities of "The Razor's Edge"... BOY DOES IT SHOW!!! Every episode was not only plagued by countless snooze-fest interviews and dull banter, but also hefty doses of technical glitches, mistakes, botches, miscues, and piss-poor production values.. In this thrilling episode from 2001, we see Roy (wearing a bloody bandage below his ear for some reason) presenting a group of local fashion designers, showing off their latest clothing line..   But, in typical "The Razor's Edge" fashion (pun intended) things don't go as planned.. Old Bloody Roy (seemingly reluctantly, as a favor to the side piece?! Maybe that's why Roy needs a bandage to heal that bloody wound, perhaps the old ball and chain found out about stuff that ain''t none of her business) throws it to "Deborah Deborah Brown," the bubbly fashion coordinator .. Wait.. the ENTERTAINMENT COORDINATOR for this very special fashion show! Presenting models from "Another Level Salon" who simply call themselves "A.L.S Styling, Fashion, And En-Ter-Tain-MENT" So without further ado, "Deborah Deborah Brown" brings the ladies on (hubba hubba VAVAVOOM!) while Roy begins to look confused.. We hear alot of uncomfortable whispers, but then the magical tones of  "Silver Shadows" by Atlantic Starr ring out like a bell!! (Here is the song so YOU TOO can put on a failed fashion show in your VERY OWN HOME! https://youtu.be/xS5Mdr2Y-II?si=D08aYVn_ZCk-HRug ) But wait! Why are the models hiding behind the pillars? Aren't they supposed to be coming out to show off their new fashion line (which looks like it came straight from the "St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store of Dallas" collection).. No music!! What gives?? Roy says: "A little louder, please! We can't hear the music!" So Mister Bloodshed Roy is annoyed by this glitch. Staring into the camera, waiting for someone to TURN THE MUSIC UP!! After all, these lovely Oakcliff honeyz's can't MODEL without hearing the MUSIC! Roy stalls for a moment (taking sneak peaks at the stems of the woman wearing the blue dress in the middle, no doubt daydreaming about slipping her the ol' Bill Cosby Spanish Fly Cocktail) and FINALLY, the music restarts at an acceptable level, and the cruddy fashion show begins!!! Laugh all you want, Roy made a point. There can't be a fashion show without audible music.. That's just heresy and crazy talk... See!? What Roy lacks in charisma, he sure makes up for it with his awareness of how a fashion show is SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!! The newspapers appealed to different constituencies, had contrasting orientations, and enjoyed substantial influence within the Irish-American community. The primary role of the Irish-American press at the beginning of the twentieth century was to make sense out of the tangle of aspirations and insecurities and to devise comprehensible strategies by which respectability and acceptance might be won by the Irish in America. As the world moved inexorably toward World War One, the Irish-American press would scramble for a strategy by which hatred of Britain and all things Anglo-Saxon might somehow be kept in harmony with loyalty to the United States. Irish immigrants remained in search of a definition of themselves, and the Irish-American press provided that definition in the American context. The Irish-American press provided a critical forum in which the passions, insecurities, and conflicting yearnings of the Irish might be voiced and reconciled. This is a copy of the Wikimedia page, the original uploaded blanked out all of the copyrighted images, the original uploader also notes that it was unlikely that The Razor's Edge got proper authorization to use such images. For a long time, I couldn't find much information online about the magazine. All I knew about the magazine is from the online copy of it and from the Wikimedia page . While trying (and failing) to find information on The Razor's Edge, I found a website for a magazine that has the similar name of RazorsEdge Magazine , that is published in Baltimore and " is a unique, quarterly lifestyle periodical targeted to the hair and fashion industries " - but despite its name, it would seem that it has nothing at all to do with the 1970's "Razor's Edge", for one it is aimed towards 17-to-60-year-olds, and two it would seem that it was first published in April of 2004 and not 1977. My luck changed when I decided to research one of the authors of the magazine, that being Alan Shenker, looking his name up online, I came across an article written in 2013 by The Comics Journal who were reporting on his death. As it turns out, Alan Shenker was a Jewish guy who was born in March of 1945 and often used the pen name of Yossarian. To quote Shenker on why he used a pen name; Basically my parents didn't want me to use the family name. Plus if you choose a name, you have a lot more leeway. People start to accept you the way you want to be, rather than some name that your parents chose twenty years earlier and forced on you. Plus it's nice to be semi-anonymous. I can go into a certain situation as Shenker and get better feedback on my work, because they don't know I was the one who had done the work. The article goes over The Razor's Edge and Yossarian's work by saying; Yossarian had a fetish for bald women and self published several issues of The Razor's Edge, which featured women shaving their heads. [...] ["]Yossarian was sweet and shy["], said [Rex] Weiner and as a good Jewish boy, he was conflicted about his art. "He had a fetish for bald women you know, but he was out front about it. There was a nice militancy about his cartoon work. He believed that cartoonists should be organized and independent and he was proud of being part of that underground movement." The story follows Phillip Carey from early childhood through his 30’s. Orphaned at 9, Phillip spends his early years raised by his childless aunt and uncle. His aunt tries to be a mother to Philip, but she is unsure how to behave whereas his uncle, a vicar, takes a cold disposition towards him. Philip is sent to a boarding school but his shyness and his club foot make it difficult for him to fit in. The novel follows this theme throughout as Phillip travels to Germany, France, and England, makes new acquaintances, searches for his life’s calling, and experiences romantic episodes. Mildred in particular, will leave you wondering about Phillip's obsession and passion for such a woman. More than a few of us have had “our Mildred”. The characters in <i>Of Human Bondage</i> are real-life with faults, qualities, and feelings that Maugham describes so vividly. It would not be unusual that we have encountered individuals with traits similar to the characters in this book. At times the emotions in this novel, so simply but purely written, will leave you either sad or happy and even perhaps, teary-eyed as the enthusiasm of youth is met with reality as Phillip tries to discover the meaning of HIS life through the dreams of others. A committed, principled, epidemiologist, Dr. Fane, falls in love with the beautiful, but vain and foolish, Kitty Garstin. She agrees to marry him only because she wishes to beat her sister to the altar. She soon commits adultery with a British official in Hong Kong, where they have relocated. Dr. Fane decides that she must accompany him to a small village, deep within China, where cholera is rampant; otherwise, he will reveal the betrayal, with grave consequences for all. It appears to be a suicide mission. The story is one of love, of a search for meaning of life, of forgiveness, and of personal growth and change. The inner thoughts of the several characters--especially Kitty--are thoroughly painted by Maugham. The title presumably refers to the veil of illusion that often hides the truth we feel about ourselves. We will not spoil for the reader the surprises that make this a compelling novel. The wife of a plantation manager in "British Malaysia" shoots a man of their acquaintance while her husband is away from home. She claims that the man she shot had attempted to rape her. Her lawyer supposes that her defense will be rather straightforward until his law clerk informs him that a blackmailer possesses evidence that will incriminate her. The defendant and her lawyer must determine whether it is best to 'explain away' the potentially damning implications of the titular letter or pay the sum demanded for its suppression. <BR><BR> The Letter premiered (24 February 1927) at London's Playhouse Theatre where it ran 60 weeks starring Dame Gladys Cooper who was also the play's producer. While in rehearsal Maugham rewrote Act 3 using an innovative flashback to portray events preceding the shooting with which Act 1 opens. Katharine Cornell starred in the Broadway production which opened (26 September 1927) at the Morosco Theatre and ran for 104 performances. This production reverted to the original script, scrapping the flashback in favor of the starring actor's recantation of its events. Meanwhile, Margaret's former roommate, Susie, has fallen for Arthur, although she knows it is hopeless. Eventually, all four meet up at a dinner party and Arthur rescues Margaret from her loveless marriage. After this novel was published in 1908, he was accused of plagiarism by magician Aleister Crowley. It was re-published in 1909, with some changes.
