The problem of evil and human suffering is the chief reason for atheism and doubt. H. Stuart Atkins, lecturer at Cal State Fullerton's College of Business and Economics, challenges skeptics and encourages believers in this book, tackling big questions from a secular and biblical perspective. The goal is to answer this: If God exists and is all loving, why do the innocent suffer and why does evil exist? On the theological and philosophical side, attempts to reconcile the existence of God with the reality of evil often fall prey to logical fallacies of the nature of God. Such attempts not only fail to solve the problem of pain and suffering, but they turn a difficult problem into an impossible problem. By confronting the truth, we can serve the best interests of scholarship, theology, and philosophy. If one is to use logic as a tool for exposing the alleged inconsistencies of the Christian faith, the game must be played by logical rules. In this paper, I ask whether the occurrence of the Holocaust is good reason to doubt the existence of God. To do so, I will explore different varieties of the problem of evil to determine exactly what kind of argument the problem of the Holocaust is. I will then explore proposed solutions to the relevant varieties of the problem of evil to see if they can solve the problem of the Holocaust. The logical problem of the Holocaust, I will argue, can only be solved at the cost of embracing an unorthodox (heretical?) “open” view of God. The evidential problem of the Holocaust can be solved, but only at the cost of embracing a deistic view of God that would entail that he might as well not exist. What’s more, both solutions are rooted in the idea of free will. Consequently, either the theist will have to answer the myriad of arguments which suggest that libertarian free will doesn’t exist, or embrace a compatibilist notion of free will which renders the above solutions moot and turns the problem of the Holocaust into a version of the logical problem of natural evil—a problem which has not yet been satisfactorily solved.

Because materialism is the belief that the physical properties of the universe are all that exist. There is no invisible, transcendent dimension of reality – only what can be observed physically. But if you hold this view, and you want to arrive at some rational explanation for the kinds of evil I discuss in the video, you have to account for those events by appealing to exclusively material causes. But as soon as you do make an explanation like that, if one is available, notice what you’ve forfeited. What you cannot say after having observed such phenomena is, “That was evil or that was wrong.” Because as soon as you admit that, what you’re saying is, “Something that happened, and is therefore real and part of reality, should not have happened.” In effect, you’re saying, “I disapprove of those events which are part of the fabric of reality and, therefore, I disapprove of reality.” To say that is to insist that reality and the events that constitute it should have been another way. Something else should have happened; specifically, that guy shouldn’t have brutally murdered an innocent life. And he shouldn’t have gloated about it afterwards as if he did something enviable with complete indifference to goodwill or the lives that he has now traumatized. But if all there is is material reality, how can you lay claim to knowledge of an alternate reality, which doesn’t exist, and which you believe should exist – some invisible better world that you would have approved of?
