FROM THE EDITOR’S INTRODUCTION: In what promises to be a significant contribution to political economy, Malik seeks to combine the philosophical understanding of the nature and logic of the derivatives market with an analysis of the entirely novel, structurally-specific mode of capitalist power it expresses. This ambitious ‘ontology of finance’ supplements Ayache’s understanding of the fundamental logic of derivatives with Jonathan Nitzan and Shimshon Bichler’s account of capital as power. Such a ‘power theory of finance’ answers both to Ayache’s claims as to the singular importance of derivatives for an understanding of pricing as such, and to Land’s claim that risk-bearing vehicles and agencies tend to corrode the inherited social forms from which they historically emerge. According to Malik, though, this inquiry requires the adjunction of Nitzan and Bichler’s understanding of capital qua absentee ownership, with its primary ordering mechanism of differential accumulation. Equally, however, it necessitates a supplement to Nitzan and Bichler’s own account: the latter already agree that ownership of property, stocks, bonds, and derivatives all pertain ultimately to the same, immanent market, with all of them being ordered by means of the universal mechanism of pricing (namely, through the discounting of anticipated future earnings). They also countenance the refusal to subordinate the analysis of capitalism to any dependency upon conditions exogenous to finance (diverging from Marxism in insisting that finance is not an excrescence of ‘real production’ or a ‘parasitical, supplementary or “fictitious” mode of capital’). However their analysis must be extended to take account of the specific operations of derivatives, in order that it might encompass the new modalities through which their complex operations multiply and transform the power axiom of differential accumulation, and, crucially, the transformations they bring about in the inherent dimension of sabotage that Nitzan and Bichler see as integral to capital-power.

HERSH YEOMAN CHARLES E. RADFORD DID NOT WANT TO BE reassigned to Washington, but it was the fall of 1970 and he was in the Navy and his country was at war. Radford, twenty-seven years old, had been hand- picked by Rear Admiral Rembrandt C. Robinson to serve as his confidential aide and secretary on the National Secu- rity Council staff in the White House. The bright and am- bitious Radford was an obvious choice for the sensitive job: he was married and had young children; he was a devout Mormon who did not drink and would never consider using drugs; and he was fierce in his determination to earn a commission and become a Navy officer. Radford reported for duty on September 18, replacing a civilian secretary who was being transferred. We propose a term structure power price model that, in contrast to widely accepted no-arbitrage based approaches, accounts for the non-storable nature of power. It belongs to a class of equilibrium game theoretic models with players divided into producers and consumers. The consumers' goal is to maximize a mean-variance utility function subject to satisfying an inelastic demand of their own clients (e.g households, businesses etc.) to whom they sell the power. The producers, who own a portfolio of power plants each defined by a running fuel (e.g. gas, coal, oil...) and physical characteristics (e.g. efficiency, capacity, ramp up/down times...), similarly, seek to maximize a mean-variance utility function consisting of power, fuel, and emission prices subject to production constraints. Our goal is to determine the term structure of the power price at which production matches consumption. In this paper we show that in such a setting the equilibrium price exists and also discuss the conditions for its uniqueness.

Using a conjoint experiment with a paired choice design embedded in a survey, this study investigates political candidates’ preferences across four features inherently connected to officeholding, namely 1) institutional position (political power), 2) remuneration, 3) time consumption and 4) work environment. The survey is conducted in Denmark from December 2-21 2021 and sent out to 7688 (83.7%) of the total pool of political candidates running for the Danish municipal election in November 2021. In total, 1941 candidates responded to the survey, which corresponds to a response rate of appr. 25% of the invited candidates, and appr. 21% of the total candidate pool.

We investigate the total resistive losses incurred in returning a power network of identical generators to a synchronous state following a transient stability event or in maintaining this state in the presence of persistent stochastic disturbances. We formulate this cost as the input-output $H^2$ norm of a linear dynamical system with distributed disturbances. We derive an expression for the total resistive losses that scales with the size of the network as well as properties of the generators and power lines, but is independent of the network topology. This topologically invariant scaling of what we term the price of synchrony is in contrast to typical power system stability notions like rate of convergence or the region of attraction for rotor-angle stability. Our result indicates that highly connected power networks, whilst desirable for higher phase synchrony, do not offer an advantage in terms of the total resistive power losses needed to achieve this synchrony. Furthermore, if power flow is the mechanism used to achieve synchrony in highly-distributed-generation networks, the cost increases unboundedly with the number of generators.

In this paper we propose a quadratic programming model that can be used for calculating the term structure of electricity prices while explicitly modeling startup costs of power plants. In contrast to other approaches presented in the literature, we incorporate the startup costs in a mathematically rigorous manner without relying on ad hoc heuristics. Moreover, we propose a tractable approach for estimating the startup costs of power plants based on their historical production. Through numerical simulations applied to the entire UK power grid, we demonstrate that the inclusion of startup costs is necessary for the modeling of electricity prices in realistic power systems. Numerical results show that startup costs make electricity prices very spiky. In the second part of the paper, we extend the initial model by including the grid operator who is responsible for managing the grid. Numerical simulations demonstrate that robust decision making of the grid operator can significantly decrease the number and severity of spikes in the electricity price and improve the reliability of the power grid.

In a recent Nature paper, Gabaix et al. \cite{Gabaix03} presented a theory to explain the power law tail of price fluctuations. The main points of their theory are that volume fluctuations, which have a power law tail with exponent roughly -1.5, are modulated by the average market impact function, which describes the response of prices to transactions. They argue that the average market impact function follows a square root law, which gives power law tails for prices with exponent roughly -3. We demonstrate that the long-memory nature of order flow invalidates their statistical analysis of market impact, and present a more careful analysis that properly takes this into account. This makes it clear that the functional form of the average market impact function varies from market to market, and in some cases from stock to stock. In fact, for both the London Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange the average market impact function grows much slower than a square root law; this implies that the exponent for price fluctuations predicted by modulations of volume fluctuations is much too big. We find that for LSE stocks the distribution of transaction volumes does not even have a power law tail. This makes it clear that volume fluctuations do not determine the power law tail of price returns.

We consider the problem of scheduling wireless links in the physical model, where we seek an assignment of power levels and a partition of the given set of links into the minimum number of subsets satisfying the signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) constraints. Specifically, we are interested in the efficiency of local power assignment schemes, or oblivious power schemes, in approximating wireless scheduling. Oblivious power schemes are motivated by networking scenarios when power levels must be decided in advance, and not as part of the scheduling computation. We first show that the known algorithms fail to obtain sub-logarithmic bounds; that is, their approximation ratio are $\tilde\Omega(\log \max(\Delta,n))$, where $n$ is the number of links, $\Delta$ is the ratio of the maximum and minimum link lengths, and $\tilde\Omega$ hides doubly-logarithmic factors. We then present the first $O(\log{\log\Delta})$-approximation algorithm, which is known to be best possible (in terms of $\Delta$) for oblivious power schemes. We achieve this by representing interference by a conflict graph, which allows the application of graph-theoretic results for a variety of related problems, including the weighted capacity problem. We explore further the contours of approximability, and find the choice of power assignment matters; that not all metric spaces are equal; and that the presence of weak links makes the problem harder. Combined, our result resolve the price of oblivious power for wireless scheduling, or the value of allowing unfettered power control.

In this paper, we describe a newly discovered statistical property of time series data for daily price changes. We conducted quantitative investigation of the {\it calm-time intervals} of price changes for 800 companies listed in the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and for the Nikkei 225 index over a 27-year period from January 4, 1975 to December 28, 2001. A calm-time interval is defined as the interval between two successive price changes above a fixed threshold. We found that the calm-time interval distribution of price changes obeys a power law decay. Furthermore, we show that the power-law exponent decreases monotonically with respect to the threshold. This paper outlines the contours of a new research agenda for the analysis of food price crises. By weaving together a detailed quantitative examination of changes in corporate profit shares with a qualitative appraisal of the restructuring in business control over the organisation of society and nature, the paper points to the rapid ascendance of a new power configuration in the global political economy of food: the Agro-Trader nexus. The agribusiness and grain trader firms that belong to the Agro-Trader nexus have not been mere 'price takers', instead they have actively contributed to the inflationary restructuring of the world food system by championing and facilitating the rapid expansion of the first-generation biofuels sector. As a key driver of agricultural commodity price rises, the biofuels boom has raised the Agro-Trader nexus’s differential profits and it has at the same time deepened global hunger. These findings suggest that food price inflation is a mechanism of redistribution.
