What would happen if someone who had an interest in the Parmenides now picked up the Phaedo? (..of course, this is what we're now doing.) What would they see? Would a Pythagorean who knew about the Apology want to know about the death? Destiny - Socrates has the kind of soul.. Mystery!: all the autos'es Crito: self - why? How do they use autos? Does it highlight the myth? Socrates as a different kind of self. Is it possible that autos is used to highlight important distinctions made in the dialogue? touke vs moira There are 14 youths (7 female, 7 male) in the myth, plus Theseus himself. So that's 15. But there are 16 (named) characters to match, in the Phaedo dialogue itself. Why doesn't Phaedo include himself? Synopsis Another fun Friday night with Pierre and members of the NS. A bit of Phaedo discussion and then a dream exploration with Josh. Highlights Josh's and Jed's Phaedo question at 75A (using the Balboa Translation ). the only way to come through self-realization is through perception. Would you agree all perceptions are identical? (Cebes: Yes) then if this whole world through our sense-perception is set up for us to have self-realization, then what is this in front of us that we are experiencing that is bringing us to Self-realization? a certain kind of perception (i.e., not as we usually use the word -- as seeing, hearing, etc.) "Reaching" or striving is inherent in Nature is the "aim" or direction, moving from .. and this can be perceived in perceptions two "equal" pencils: not "seen" but "judged" What are all beautiful things reaching for? (Beauty Itself) Proposition 35 of Proclus' Elements of Theology . All things in nature have an inherent tendency to reach beyond themselves to their more ideal forms. I am too I am in some sort of competition. The competition is to make the best coin. To make the most beautiful coin. I do not know really what it is for. But in this competition, the coin has to involve New York City and it needs to involve the empire state building. I lay out the front and the back of the coin into different patterns. On the front side is the building itself. I remember measuring the dimensions of the coin so that it was symmetrical, so that the tip of the Empire State building was at the top and at the bottom or the base of the building was at the bottom of the coin. I remember measuring such that the base was equally split across the bottom. I remember measuring the coin and the dimensions of the building sets that the building would match the ratios of the golden ratio as much as possible and yet represent the Empire State building. After I laid that down on a piece of paper, then I said out to do the actual work on the coin. I said out to do the metal work for the metallurgy of making the coin. I said out to mold the actual coin of the metal. First I forged the metal, then I poured it into the mold, then I polished the pieces, yes they were two pieces. Part of the requirements was that you did both sides of the coin so that they could be seen like in the old TV commercials when people sell coins. I remember thinking that I did not really know how to do the metal, like the carving on it. I did not know how to make the imprint on the metal. Or how to draw it. I took this little tool which look like a pencil, but it had a little wire at the end. I went around and I etched the marks on the side of the cord. I carved out the lines around the side of the coin so that it would not be so smooth in your hand. I carved out a little lip so that it would grip better. Then I went in and I carved out the building so that you could see it. It was strange because even though I did the carving by pressing into the coin you could see the building because somehow the lines lifted up so you could see it. I remember wondering what am I going to do with the backside? What is going to go on the backside? I don’t know if I decided that, but I remember later in the next room thinking like, oh I’m going to put a spiral there, like a spiral universe. I had this idea that the Empire State building was a spiritual vortex. Like a place where spiritual energy happened. I made the coin and it was beautiful. I remember thinking that this coin was going to win the competition. Josh's Dream #2 -- Sun 17 Jan 2021 1 After awakening and going to the bathroom I came back and fell asleep. I came back in this dream to the competition, but this time I wasn’t the person making the coin, I wasn’t even in the dream. It was like I went back and it was this other man, He looked like this chess grandmaster that Elijah watches on YouTube. He looked like Hikaru Nakamura. He was a Japanese American man, with a round face and somewhat shorter, and round and look somewhat like a bear with a furry face and round cheeks. 2 I remember seeing him in his workshop again and he was laying out all of these plans and details. The task was the same task, he had to make a coin of the Empire State building. He lays out the plants on the front and the back, but this time there is commentary going on. The commentary that is going on is the announcers of the competition, like television announcers at a sporting event. They are able to somehow see all of the different people making their coins. Most of the other coin makers are at the competition. They are making their coins where the competition is occurring. But this coin maker is doing a lot of his work in his workshop. As he is working in his workshop the commentators are saying we don’t know if he is going to get the coin done and they were criticizing his design and the way in which he was working from his workshop. They could see the layout and the pattern and they could see the order of the front side, but they thought that it wasn’t enough. They were like, can’t you see the shoreline behind the Empire State building. Doesn’t he need to add more detail? Shouldn’t we see buildings across the river behind the building? I remember wondering in the dream if you could actually see the shoreline behind the Empire State Building? I don’t remember seeing that behind the building. Then there was a moment where I was above New York and I remember seeing the Empire State building. I could see that depending on what view you were looking at the building, it was possible to see the river behind it. I could see that from both perspectives, that both of them were true. But if this metal worker made the coin like the way the commentators thought he should it would not have the proportions that he had laid out and the detail that he laid out earlier in his planning stage. It would come from a different perspective, so you would not see the symmetry of the building and it would not contain the approximations of the golden ratio. 3 Then the dream changes to the actual competition location and I am seeing the guy make the coin. As he is making the coin, he has done a lot of the work back at his workshop, but now he needs to finalize the final details of it. He is now at the competition and they have a makeshift workshop there. He is having trouble finishing the coin because he does not have the right tools. He left some of his tools at home, like the etching pencil or sandpaper and various things. I remember thinking that he needed help and that he needed an assistant. But he didn’t have one. He has done so much planning at home that he missed completing the project at the competition itself. Like he didn’t finish and he was very very disappointed with himself. The commentators were shocked that he did not finish. They said that he had shown too much arrogance in thinking that he could wait till the last minute to complete the coin. I remember seeing him and he was dejected and let down, but he also said to himself that he was going to go home and finish the coin because this coin is going to be beautiful. I may not win the competition, but I am going to complete my project. I am going to finish it. Synopsis Pierre and the NS continue our discussion on the place of the Ideas/Virtues. This leads us into a discussion of the Phaedo. Why is the dialogue named after him? Highlights Justice Philosophical Midwifery (PMW) as a way of dealing with (understanding) their anger What is it about tracing the consequences that is so important in reflection? How does this idea of Justice relate to Knowledge? Could we explore Courage, Temperance, Wisdom – all the virtues – in the same way we explored Justice yesterday ? Could we see how important these ideas are for ourselves ? Then our culture has agreed to keep all these ideas out of its formal educaiton: How all these ideas fit together and why they must, etc. The problem of Relativism: We conclude these ideas don’t have anything in common You must see these yourself and in yourself. Philosophy is thus everywhere. Isn’t this what everyone has to see in this election? 30-40% of the people do not know how to think in terms of implications Why is it that most of the Platonic dialogues are named after a person, but the Republic is not? The problem of implications. What follows if all of this is true? Must these virtues/ideas be connected with the Self? Justice-Self, Beauty-Self, Knowledge-Self, etc. (in the Greek) : Should each of the virtues really be called Self, self, self, self? How is Being connected with Self? Chinul: gradual (understanding of the virtues) and sudden (experience of ‘Self’) The Pillar of Justice: Beyond just seeing Beauty What does Be, Being mean? How are the virtues connected to Being? What is so hot about the Phaedo? Again: Why is the dialogue Phaedo named after Phaedo? Doesn’t the Phaedo ialogue start with a conversation with Eckecrates What do you make about the fact that these guys came a long way to hear about Socrates’ Self in the introduction of the Phaedo The number of people named as having been there at Socrates’ death is the same number that went to be sacrificed to the Minotaur in the myth mentioned in the Phaedo: 14 What are they interested in? How did he die? These folks (philosophers!) are intelligent, who want to hear from Phaedo. But what does this mean though, for Phaedo? Again: Why is his name on the dialogue? Try this: How is Phaedo functioning ? For that matter: How do all the people function who have dialogues named after them? What do you think of the statement: “The way to the logos is by understanding function ” What do you think of how Phaedo is functioning ? The minotaur: slaying of reason What does it mean that Socrates is fucntioning as a mean term between the divine and the mortal? What does it mean to you when you pick up this dialogue and consider Phaedo?: The whole . How to die: Whether you can die before you drop dead How to play with implications All different yogas agree with Plato: Every yoga says the same thing. Simias and Cebes: Is it really just an ‘intellectual pathologos’? Or is there more going on in the Phaedo? This dialogue undermines the philosophy of their local religions. What follows if the implications of that can be pushed into the modern world? Would you say that there are some religions that people hold onto which undermine their own idea of death, and therefore how they function? (((missed around 11:25-28))) no greater vice than to hate any logos. Hatred of mankind. 89D Once again: Why did Plato choose the name, Phaedo, for the title of this dialogue This is an invitation for you to continue with that tradition. He is living it. And is challenging the contemporary religious views which undermine the Logos. That is the last piece put in on implications, conclusions. 11:34 David asks: Why is Crito not included in the list of those present? Phaedo now is greater than any of the 14. None of the 14 knew whether the Minotaur was slain or not. Only Theseus knew whether (and how) he slew the Minotaur. The rest have to be “believers”. Pierre leaves 11:38. Continued discussion.
