1ERIC ED318027: Teaching The Controversies: The Other Within The Classroom.
By ERIC
In presenting courses to students, teachers should acknowledge opposition to their educational choices. Discussions of the bases and possible consequences of choices may--and should--lead students to ask for more freedom and more options. Students understand that teachers must evaluate them, so if teachers offer as much leeway as they can, students will try to be as fair as their teachers are. The teaching of controversies recognizes existing conflicts and avoids pretending a unity that does not exist. In writing-about-literature courses, teachers can explain why particular readings are chosen, where they fit, what the teachers' biases are, and what opposition to the teachers' methods exist. Acknowledgement of others' truths is a step toward becoming a teacher. This implies options in ways of thinking, which is at the core of educational goals. Allowing beliefs to shape teachings, without admitting to questions about those positions, gives rise to a monologue posing as a dialogue. (SG)

4Exploring The Views And Experiences Of Making Every Contact Count And Other Brief Interventions Within Service Providers And Users Within The Third And Social Economy Sector
By Beth Nichol, Catherine Haighton, Angela Rodrigues and Rob Wilson
Making Every Contact Count (MECC) aims to promote healthy lifestyle behaviours by utilising the everyday conversations that service providers have with their clients. Through opportunistic conversations lasting between seconds and minutes, MECC aims to target behaviours relating to smoking, diet, physical activity, and alcohol intake. Due to its brief and therefore cost-effective nature, MECC has been widely applied within healthcare settings, and is now a compulsory part of training for all NHS healthcare staff. Numerous studies have investigated the implementation of MECC training and MECC conversations within these settings, and there is some evidence for its effectiveness, namely in pregnant individuals and recent mothers. The Third and Social Economy (TSE) sector includes all voluntary and community groups that operate independently to the government, outside of friends and family, and predominantly for social benefit. This sector offers an appropriate setting to deliver MECC and other brief interventions for a number of reasons. Firstly, TSE organisations may have more regular and sustained interactions with service users, and thus may have built more rapport. Secondly, a brief intervention delivered by volunteers reduces costs even further than when delivered within healthcare. Thirdly, the TSE allows increased access and interaction with those of low socio-economic status (SES) and other seldom heard groups. Due to an established relationship between SES and health behaviour, the delivery of MECC may be even more important within this setting. However, brief interventions have seldom been explored within the TSE, with MECC specifically researched even less. Research is needed to explore the views and opinions of those who would be delivering MECC and receiving it; questions such as whether MECC would be appropriate in a TSE setting, how it might best be implemented, and what the barriers may be. The current qualitative study aims to explore these questions through semi-structured interviews with TSE service providers and users. The underlying epistemological standpoint is critical realist, and as such the methodology will apply content analysis to identify barriers and facilitators mapped onto the Theoretical Domain Framework (TDF) but also apply thematic analysis within these to explore latent themes and concepts. The aim of the current research is that by understanding the barriers and facilitators to implementing MECC within a TSE setting, current training can be assessed as to whether it is adequate, informing future funding and training in this area.

5Protocol For An Evidence Review Of The Needs, Benefits And Risks Related To Priority Assistive Products Within The ISO 9999:2023 Class 18 Furnishings, Fixtures And Other Assistive Products For Supporting Activities In Indoor And Outdoor Human-made Environments
By Irene Calvo, Hana Phillips, Rachael McDonald, River Rea, Johan Borg, Steve Milanese and Sameer More
Objective: The proposed scoping review's objective is to examine the need, benefits, and risks associated with selected assistive products within ISO 9999:2023 class 18 Furnishings, fixtures and other assistive products for supporting activities in indoor and outdoor human-made environments. Introduction: Assistive products are increasingly essential for supporting people to live independent, productive, healthy, and dignified lives. In 2016, the World Health Organization published the Priority Assistive Product List to improve access to assistive products. This scoping review examines the evidence surrounding selected assistive products to support the update of the World Health Organization’s Priority Assistive Product List. Inclusion criteria: The research included in this study will address selected assistive products within ISO 9999:2023 class 18 Furnishings, fixtures and other assistive products for supporting activities in indoor and outdoor human-made environments considered for prioritisation for the World Health Organization Priority Assistive Product List update. All research included will respond to at least one of the three research topics (i.e., need, benefit, and risk). Methods: Search terms were developed using the World Health Organization Priority Assistive Product List and product classes, subclasses and descriptions listed within ISO 9999:2023 class 18 Furnishings, fixtures and other assistive products for supporting activities in indoor and outdoor human-made environments. Initial searches will be conducted using the following databases: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Epistemonikos, Medline/PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. All research will be limited to publications in the English language published in 2001 or later. Screening will be conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses: Extension for Scoping Reviews checklist and flow diagram and checklist will be followed for reporting. The methodological quality of included studies will be assessed using the ‘Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool’ for primary research and, for systematic reviews, ‘A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews’.

9Do School Absenteeism And Bullying Victimization Reinforce Each Other? A Longitudinal Examination Of Within-Person Associations And The Role Of Internalizing Problems.
By Qingqing Yang, Jiho Park, Paul Morgan, Yoonkyung Oh and Eric Hengyu Hu
Being bullied and being absent from school co-occur during elementary school. Students who are bullied or who are absent display lower academic and socio-behavioral functioning and well-being over time. Yet whether and how being bullied and being absent are bidirectionally related is less clear. We will investigate the bidirectional relations between victimization and absenteeism and the role of internalizing problem behaviors in their relations using a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model across 3rd to 5th grade in analyses of a nationally representative sample (N= 7,973). We will address two questions: 1) Are there longitudinal reciprocal relations between school absenteeism and bullying victimization from Grades 3 to 5? We focus on within-student associations, that is, does being involved in higher than usual school absenteeism and bullying victimization at a given time point lead to higher than usual levels of each other at a subsequent time point? 2)To what extent do internalizing problem behaviors function as the underlying mechanism in the relations between school absenteeism and bullying victimization?

10Why One Sibling Is Socially Anxious While The Other Is Not: A Longitudinal Within-family Study Examining The Roles Of Parenting And Personality
By Karen Rienks, Susan Branje, Stefanie Nelemans and Wim Meeus
Social anxiety is among the most common types of psychopathology, and is associated with wide-ranging psychosocial difficulties (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; de Lijster et al., 2018). Adolescence is of importance in examining social anxiety symptoms, due to an increased self-consciousness and sensitivity for social stimuli in this stage of life (Caouette & Guyer, 2014; Somerville, 2013). In the development of social anxiety, both individual characteristics, like personality, and environmental influences, like parenting, are crucial (Kessler et al., 2012). Specifically, within-family research is still lacking, but necessary to entangle effects of environmental- and individual characteristics (Boyle et al., 2004). Restrictive parenting, characterized by high control and low autonomy support, has often been associated to social anxiety (Wong & Rapee, 2015; Wong & Rapee, 2016). Differential parenting might explain sibling differences in social anxiety: if one sibling experiences restrictive parenting they might develop social anxiety, while the other sibling, who does not experience restrictive parenting, does not develop social anxiety (Avinun & Knafo, 2014). However, contradictory evidence has been found as well. Studies have found that parents reported that all children in one family receive a similar level of control, regardless of their level of (social) anxiety (Hudson & Rapee, 2002; Lindhout et al., 2009). This suggests that restrictive parenting might not be the main reason for why some siblings develop social anxiety, while others do not. Therefore, individual characteristics have to be investigated as well. Differences in social anxiety might be explained by the personality of the siblings, since adolescents with an overcontroller personality profile have higher levels of anxiety than adolescents with other personality profiles (Akse et al., 2007; Klimstra et al., 2010; Meeus et al., 2011; van Aken & Dubas, 2004). Besides directly influencing social anxiety, personality might alter the association between parenting and social anxiety. Undercontrollers were found to display the greatest levels of internalizing problems when experiencing an unfavourable parenting style (Dubas et al., 2002). The current longitudinal within-family study aims to create an integrative picture with regard to the roles of parenting and personality in explaining the differences in social anxiety between adolescent siblings.

13DTIC ADA1003040: Development Of A Distributed, Adaptive, Direction And Control (Civil Preparedness Communications) Network Within The State Of Rhode Island, Which May Serve As A Prototype Model For The Design Of State Area Networks In Other States.
By Defense Technical Information Center
This report describes the problems and a series of solutions to the implementation of a statewide Civil Preparedness Telecommunications System that linked together logical control points of local governments and Emergency Response units. The system was composed of cost effective two way radio voice equipment with facsimile record copy capability (unattended). To permit operation under blackout conditions, a unique battery power module was developed to power the unit up to two weeks under such conditions. Simple EMP measures, were taken at each station as well as special modifications to prevent the radios from being either turned off or the volume from being set too low. The project was coordinated with the R.I. National Guard who helped in licensing the system as a joint public service effect. Positive Voice Identification made simple the task of identifying stations on the network. Station location site selection was a challenge and each station ultimately had to be approved by the head of Local Government, Local CD Director & State director. The result was places where true direction and control activities take place based upon actual experience. The network is operational as a demonstration model with continuous weekly test taking place to ensure continued availability in time of emergency.

30ERIC ED211735: Vocational Guidance: Policy Options Within The Context Of The Vocational Education Act And Other Federal Legislation.
By ERIC
Vocational guidance and counseling is supported by the United States government through a variety of laws. The Vocational Education Act (VEA) and other federal legislation consistently provide funds for services to assist in the transition from education/training to work, from unemployment to employment, or from one career to another. Most legislation portrays vocational guidance as an ancillary service. Multiple funding and legislative mandates have made coordination of federal programs and funding sources for vocational guidance difficult. Responsibility for such coordination efforts has been delegated to the local level, where inconsistent terminology that is interpreted differently by administrators and practitioners and other responsibilities of local school guidance personnel act as barriers to administrative efficiency and coordination. Proposed changes to the VEA's guidance provisions would make guidance part of the core programs by funding it out of the basic federal program grant and ensuring inclusion of guidance programs and personnel in all aspects of the ACT's program. A unique role exists for the federal government in the collection, delivery, and utilization of occupational information through the activities of the Employment Service, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of the Census, and the National and State Occupational Information Coordinating Committees. (Legislative summaries are appended.) (YLB)

Data for the report was compiled primarily from self-reported information to the LSA's online Directory of Linguistics Programs and Departments.
