2Mindset Change Of Everyday Life Needed To Reduce Climate Change And Protect The Ocean
By How To Protect The Ocean
In this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, host Andrew Lewin discusses the urgent need for action to address climate change and protect the ocean. While there is growing awareness and conversations about these issues, the actions taken do not always align with the words. Time is running out, and it is crucial that tangible actions are taken to make a positive impact. Lewin emphasizes the importance of moving beyond empty promises and actually implementing effective measures to safeguard the ocean and combat climate change.Link to A Climate Change Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/a-climate-change-with-matt-matern/id1557317787 Follow a career in conservation: https://www.conservation-careers.com/online-training/ Use the code SUFB to get 33% off courses and the careers program. Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3NmYvsIConnect with Speak Up For Blue: Website: https://bit.ly/3fOF3Wf Instagram: https://bit.ly/3rIaJSG Twitter: https://bit.ly/3rHZxpc In this episode, the host emphasizes the importance of shifting our mindset from consumerism to considering the impact on the planet when making purchasing decisions. They argue that our current mindset of accumulating material possessions and constantly buying more is not only unnecessary but also detrimental to the environment.Consumerism, as the host explains, is driven by the belief that having more stuff equates to winning or achieving success. However, they question the notion of what exactly we win by accumulating more things and conclude that there is no tangible reward. This realization prompts the host to argue that it is not necessary to continue with a consumerist mindset.Instead, the host advocates for a shift in thinking towards considering the planet when making purchases. This means being mindful of the environmental impact of our choices and making more sustainable decisions. They acknowledge their own guilt in sometimes succumbing to the temptation of buying unnecessary items but highlight the importance of reflecting on our consumption habits. The host suggests that we should question whether we truly need multiple versions of the same item, such as reusable cups or mugs. By reducing our consumption and making conscious choices, we can contribute to protecting the environment and combating climate change. They encourage listeners to prioritize the well-being of the planet over material possessions and to consider the long-term consequences of their actions.Overall, the episode emphasizes the need to shift our mindset from consumerism to a more environmentally conscious approach when it comes to purchasing. By adopting this mindset, we can contribute to the protection of the planet, the ocean, and the overall environment. In this episode, the speaker emphasizes that money and material possessions do not guarantee happiness. They acknowledge that having more things may temporarily make someone feel better, especially if they have more than others or acquire things before someone else. However, the speaker highlights that when speaking to individuals who are nearing the end of their lives, it becomes clear that it is the experiences in life that truly count, rather than the amount of stuff one possesses. The speaker emphasizes that true happiness comes from experiences and relationships. They mention that it is not just about engaging in activities like hiking or exploring the environment, but also about being around the people we love, such as family and pets. The speaker suggests that it is how we live our lives that truly matters and that we should focus on enjoying life and having adventures, rather than constantly striving to accumulate more things. While money can provide security and alleviate financial stress, the speaker argues that it is not the key to happiness. They acknowledge that money can put someone in a position to do things that make them happy, but it is not the sole determinant of happiness. Instead, the speaker encourages a shift in mindset from the pursuit of material possessions to valuing experiences and relationships. In the context of addressing climate change, the speaker argues that a change in mindset is necessary. They emphasize that simply talking about the issue and making small individual changes is not enough. Instead, they advocate for a more aggressive approach and a commitment to taking direct action. The speaker suggests that working towards addressing climate change requires moving away from the focus on acquiring more things and instead prioritizing the well-being of the planet and future generations.Overall, the episode highlights that money and material possessions do not guarantee happiness. Instead, true happiness comes from the experiences we have and the relationships we cultivate in our lives. The speaker encourages a shift in mindset towards valuing these aspects of life and taking action to address important issues such as climate change.According to the podcast episode, it is emphasized that we need to be aggressive in our approach to climate change and ocean protection. The host expresses frustration with the lack of action being taken despite the acknowledgement of these issues. It is mentioned that while there is a lot of talk and promises being made, there is a lack of follow-through and actual action being taken. The urgency of the situation is highlighted, with the host stating that we are running out of time. It is emphasized that in order to make a difference and protect the planet, we need to act more and act fast. The host mentions that this pace of action needs to be continued and that we cannot afford to slow down at this point. The podcast also references another podcast called \"A Climate Change with Matt Maddern,\" where the host discusses climate change and interviews people involved in addressing the issue. The host recommends listening to this podcast and encourages listeners to share their thoughts on it. However, it is mentioned that not much is known about Matt Maddern, other than the fact that he was involved in politics at one point and is from the US.

11The Life Cycle And Immature Stages Of Kallima Albofasciata, The Endemic Oakleaf, In The Andaman Islands (Indian Ocean, Bay Of Bengal).
By Kamalanathan, Veenakumari and Mohanraj, Prashanth
This article is from Journal of Insect Science , volume 12 . Abstract Kallima albofasciataMoore 1877 (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), a species of Oakleaf butterfly reported for the first time from the Andaman Islands in 1874, was recognized as an insular endemic in 1877. Studies so far indicate that it is restricted to the contiguous islands of South and Middle Andamans. On these islands it apparently has a very localized distribution, giving rise to fears that it may be vulnerable and could face the threat of extinction with increasing developmental pressures on its habitat. Though it was reported to be extinct in 1993, its presence has since been documented and is currently protected by law in India. Nevertheless, nothing is known about the immature stages, its larval food plants or life history, and very little is known about its habitat and periods of occurrence on the islands. Here, details of all these aspects of this little—known butterfly of the Andaman Islands are presented. This should prove useful in the formulation of a conservation strategy for this iconic Oriental butterfly.

17DTIC ADA202486: SS OMI YUKON, D.N. 547919, Explosions And Fire On 28 October 1986 In The Pacific Ocean Approximately 1000 Miles West Of Honolulu, Hawaii, With Multiple Loss Of Life And Personnel Injuries
By Defense Technical Information Center
At approximately 1025 local time on 28 October 1986, the U.S. tank vessel SS OMI YUKON suffered major explosions and fires in the starboard fuel oil storage tanks and engine room while enroute to Ulsan, South Korea from Barbers Point, Hawaii. The explosions extensively damaged the engine room and blew the stack deck and stack completely off the vessel. Two men working on deck near the starboard side of the stack deck and two men on watch in the engine room are missing and presumed dead. An additional four crew members were injured. The survivors abandoned ship at about 1600 in a lifeboat and an inflatable life raft. A distress signal from their electronic position- indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) was detected by commercial aircraft and confirmed by Search and Rescue Satellite (SARSAT). Coast Guard aircraft located the survivors at about 2030 and maintained surveillance until they were rescued by the Japanese fishing vessel SHOICHI MARU at 0700 the next morning. The Commandant has determined that the cause of the casualty was both the contamination of the vessel's bunkers with flush oil during bunkering through a subsea pipeline and the absence of a flame screen in the after starboard fuel oil tank vent.

31DTIC ADA164884: Marine Casualty Report. Tankship Puerto Rican O.N. 535000, Explosion And Fire In The Pacific Ocean, On 31 October 1984 With Loss Of Life.
By Defense Technical Information Center
At approximately 0324, October 31, 1984, the tankship PUERTO RICAN suffered explosions and fire in number 6 center void space and the adjacent wing cargo tanks. The explosions and fire damaged the hull of the vessel to the extent that it broke in two and the stern section sank three days later. The pilot and one crew member were thrown overboard by the explosions and is missing and presumed dead. The Commandant has concurred with the board that the actual cause of casualty cannot be established with certainty but the most probable cause was the failure to repair a gouge, later to become an opening, in the stainless steel cladding in the bulkhead separating 5 center port cargo tank and 6 center void space allowing caustic soda cargo to enter the void. The caustic soda reacted with the zinc coatings in the 6 center void space producing hydrogen gas which ignited. This led to a sequence of explosions and fire which led to the loss of the vessel. Contributing to the casualty was the failure of the master to locate the missing caustic soda cargo which leaked from 5 center port tank into 6 center void space. This report contains the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation Report and the Action taken by the Commandant to determine the proximate cause of the casualty and provide a response to the recommendations to prevent recurrence. 46DTIC ADA037254: SS SILVER DOVE Cargo Shift And Sinking In The North Pacific Ocean On 2 April 1973 Without Loss Of Life.
By Defense Technical Information Center
At 0937 on 31 March 1973, the freighter SS SILVER DOVE, en route from Guam to the Panama Canal with a bulk cargo of raw sugar, listed suddenly to port; the vessel sank 41 hours later 180 miles southwest of Johnston Island. Water had been leaking through a crack in the hull for several days; since the crew's attempts to repair the hull were unsuccessful, the vessel had stopped in Guam for temporary repairs. After leaving Guam, the leak continued, however, and the ship listed slightly to starboard. The sudden list to port occurred when the master shifted weight to the port side to correct the starboard list. The crew was rescued before the ship sank. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the sinking of the SILVER DOVE was the loss of transverse stability when the master was unable to assess the vessel's stability and incorrectly transferred fuel and water at a time when a crack was allowing seawater to leak into the sugar cargo. Contributing factors were the inability of the repair crew to repair the crack in the hull properly, the Coast Guard inspector's release of the ship without insuring proper temporary repairs because he had no inspection instructions, the inability of the ship's crew to remove the leaking water, and the creation of empty cargo space when the sugar dissolved to form the viscous sugar-water solution. 49NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS) 19820019079: Impact Of An Asteroid Or Comet In The Ocean And Extinction Of Terrestrial Life
By NASA Technical Reports Server (NTRS)
Finite difference calculations describing the impact mechanics associated with a 10 to 30 km diameter silicate or water object impacting a 5 km deep ocean overlying a silicate solid planet demonstrate that from 12 to 15% of the bolide energy resides in the water. It is speculated that minimal global tsunami run-up heights on the continents would be 300-400 meters, and that such waves would inundate all low altitude continental areas, and strip and silt-over virtually all vegetation. As a result the terrestrial animal food chain would be seriously perturbed. This could in turn cause extinction of large terrestrial animals.

1Hoof and Claw
By Sir Charles G. D. Roberts

These 14 short stories about animals are superb examples of Roberts smooth storytelling style. Knows as the Father of Canadian Poetry, he loved to also write in prose about the wilderness and the personalities of the animals to be found there as well as the exciting things they are capable of. Bears, White Wolves, Lynx, hawks and yes, cattle are just a few of the animals written about. (Summary by phil chenevert)

2Sins of Hollywood
By Ed Roberts
Exacerbated by several high-profile Hollywood scandals, a wave of anti-Hollywood rhetoric tried to paint the movie capital as a veritable hotbed of crime, licentiousness, and moral transgression. THE SINS OF HOLLYWOOD, published in May 1922, is perhaps the most prominent anti-Hollywood polemic published during this turbulent time in film history. This anonymously-written booklet recounts in sensational, lurid detail the various high-profile scandals that precipitated the firestorm surrounding Hollywood's supposed moral turpitude. The author (later identified as former PHOTOPLAY editor Ed Roberts) pulls no punches in his condemnation of "movie vice." He even takes aim at some of Hollywood's biggest stars, directors, and producers: Rudolph Valentino, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, Wallace Reid, Thomas Ince, Mabel Normand, Mae Busch, and more. Although real names are only sparingly used, most subjects are easily identified.

In a nutshell, the author takes us on a guided tour through the seedy, disreputable, thoroughly indecent underworld that lurks beneath Hollywood's glistening, glamorous facade. It is a sensational work of moral alarmism that gives us a wild, untamed, unapologetically lurid account of Hollywood's dark side.

NOTE: This book is an entertaining, propulsively readable book regardless of one's prior knowledge of early Hollywood history. However, some listeners may want to know the identities of these scandalized stars. Their identities can be found in the annotations provided by TAYLOROLOGY: http://www.taylorology.com/issues/Taylor30.txt (Summary by ChuckW)

3Dry Dock of a Thousand Wrecks
By Philip Ilott Roberts
After an introduction to the Ole Jerry McAuley Mission in the year 1912, many wonderful stories of destitute alcoholics and addicts making a quick recovery through a surrender to Christ Jesus. The book gives glimpses that the years of the highly esteemed Samuel H. Hadley have allowed for the “Evangelical Podium” to firmly take root in the Mission and is corroding the original purpose (the original purpose of this mission was to provide a place for chronic alcoholics and addicts who had spiritual experiences during incarceration to continue it outside of prison and not end up back at their old haunts after being repeatedly rejected by churches and society). The book tells of the on-goings in the new Ole Jerry McAuley Mission at 316 Water Street, NYC, during the early 1900's. Many things seem to have changed since the 1870's when Jerry McAuley ran the mission. First, anyone was welcome. Second, the years of sobriety touted in this book were two to five, as opposed to the decades and quarter centuries in its earlier times. Thirdly, advertising their mission, or testifying for the mission was the goal as opposed to living a spiritually guided life. This book tells of many great successes but it wasn't achieving the same high success rate. (Summary by Curt Walton)

4Jim The Story Of A Backwoods Police Dog (And Other Stories)
By Sir Charles G. D. Roberts

Deputy Sheriff Tug Blackstock wanted a dog to help with his work. As for Jim, at first glance he might almost have been taken for a slim, young black bear rather than a dog. They were a pair, indeed, to strike the most stolid imagination, let alone the sensitive, brooding, watchful imagination of the backwoods. Plus three other stories. - Summary by Story text and David Wales

6Earth's Enigmas
By Sir Charles G. D. Roberts

Most of the stories in this collection attempt to present one or another of those problems of life or nature to which, as it appears to many of us, there is no adequate solution within sight. Others are the almost literal transcript of dreams which seemed to me to have a coherency, completeness, and symbolic significance sufficiently marked to justify me in setting them down. The rest are scenes from that simple life of Canadian backwoods and tide-country with which my earlier years made me familiar. - Summary by CHARLES G D ROBERTS

10Mormon Battalion, Its History and Achievements
By B. H. Roberts

A history of the Longest March of Military in History. The Mormon Battalion was the only religious unit in United States military history in federal service, recruited solely from one religious body and having a religious title as the unit designation. In 1847, as the Mormons were in Iowa heading West, after being driven out of their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois, the U.S. Army requested 500 volunteers to assist in the Mexican-American War effort. From July 1847 to July 1848 the battalion made a grueling march of nearly 2,100 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California. The Battalion’s march and service supported the eventual cession of much of the American Southwest from Mexico to the United States, especially the Gadsden Purchase of 1853 of southern Arizona and New Mexico.

This is their story.

- Summary by Wayne Cooke
