With 260 km/h maximum sustained wind speeds, Category 5 Hurricane Maria tore through Dominica on September 18, 2017, causing mass destruction and directly affecting some 73,000 people (the entire population). Sixty-five deaths in Dominica were attributed to Hurricane Maria. Critical infrastructure - including schools, hospitals, electrical lines, houses, public buildings and government offices, and private structures key to the economy and people's livelihoods - was significantly damaged. Beyond the immediate impact in Dominica, the 2017 hurricane season highlighted existing gaps in the overall disaster preparedness and resilience levels - as well as forcing queries on north/south responsibilities.Mr. Hypolite and his school, Castle Bruce Secondary School, survived Maria - the tenth most intensive Atlantic hurricane on record. However, the results and challenges, including on the education system, were dramatic. Not only were buildings fully lost or significantly damaged, virtually all educational resources were consumed by Maria and its aftermath. The IT for Dominica Foundation (www.itfordominica.com), an Alberta-based program has been working with the Miinstry of Education in the Commonwealth of Dominica for nearly 20 years supporting educators in integrating information technology (IT) into classroom settings. This has occurred through provision of technologies (in the early 2000s), installation, technical supports, and professional development. The program has recently increased its efforts in the interest of student learning post Hurricane Maria.Hurricane Maria has highlighted key questions, \"What is our responsibility as northern neighbours - and possibly as creators of global warming/climate change - in supporting southern neighbours who face the wrath of warming ocean temperatures?\" The speakers will address the issues at hand.Speakers: Steve Hypolite and Maurice HollingsworthSteve Hypolite is Principal of Castle Bruce Secondary School, one of fifteen secondary schools in the Commonwealth of Dominica. Abstract Background: Upper tract urothelial carcinomas (UT-UC) can invade the pelvicalyceal system making differential diagnosis of the various histologically distinct renal cell carcinoma (RCC) subtypes and UT-UC, difficult. Correct diagnosis is critical for determining appropriate surgery and post-surgical treatments. We aimed to identify microRNA (miRNA) signatures that can accurately distinguish the most prevalent RCC subtypes and UT-UC form the normal kidney. Methods and Findings: miRNA profiling was performed on FFPE tissue sections from RCC and UT-UC and normal kidney and 434 miRNAs were significantly deregulated in cancerous vs. the normal tissue. Hierarchical clustering distinguished UT-UCs from RCCs and classified the various RCC subtypes among them. qRT-PCR validated the deregulated expression profile for the majority of the miRNAs and ROC analysis revealed their capability to discriminate between tumour and normal kidney. An independent cohort of freshly frozen RCC and UT-UC samples was used to validate the deregulated miRNAs with the best discriminatory ability (AUC>0.8, p

In a world where one in four people speaks English and the other three out of four are likely to be learning English, it would be disingenuous to suggest that speaking English as the global language is anything other than a significant asset now and for the future. Technology makes it possible and pragmatic to choose a global language, and there are significant advantages in the use of English as the lingua franca to the knowledge economy, global research, international diplomacy and business. Yet, to the generation of young people who can be described as "born global", living in a hyper-connected, diverse and mobile society, speaking only one language can never be regarded as enough. To achieve personal, academic and professional goals to a global standard will require a global mind-set, an international outlook and cultural agility. These attributes are more likely to be fostered in a person who has stepped beyond the confines of the first language; the person who can see the world through another lens; the person who can read the world's history in its original languages; the person who can mediate between cultures; the person who can successfully connect to another culture using another language. English as the lingua franca will take you so far along the way, but the journey continues through other languages. The recruits of the future will require hybrid skill sets. They will need sector specific knowledge, international experience and a range of transversal employability skills such strategic leadership skills, problem-solving, global client management skills and commercial awareness. All of these skills are associated with human relations and these are developed through global communication skills in a range of languages. The age of the indulged monolingual has passed. A Trippy Atmosphere

As mainstream media credibility falls completely away, anyone wanting to find out what the "truth" is about this or that must do their own research. What you find out pretty immediately, is how information is skewed and biased, especially when it comes to issues connected to money and politics. 

The U.S. government has recently contended that communities cannot be prepared without first ensuring the safety of responders and their families. Organizations have generally done little to nothing to ensure that the families of their responders are adequately prepared to survive and function on their own in the absence of the responder. Consequently, there exists a widespread policy gap concerning family preparedness in the first-responder community. Research indicates that much of the U.S. population has ignored the U.S. governments preparedness message and opted not to prepare. This thesis used a selection research method to explore whether the development and execution of a family preparedness program would assist the Delaware State Police (DSP) in maintaining its capability during a major crisis. Good ideas and precedent for creating such policy were captured from existing literature, leading to the conclusion that the DSP should mandate a comprehensive family preparedness program that includes emergency records management, the development of family liaison troopers, and go-kits for families as issued equipment. The thesis further concludes that responder family preparedness is different from general citizen preparedness and that leaving it in the optional category is insufficient.

Almost every sector of the economy is affected by COVID-19; and the education sector is no exception to this. In the midst of COVID-19, which has been disturbed by the academic year, educational institutions are developing better methods, albeit complementary to conventional classroom education. Captured in the vortex, the Indian education system needs to change the paradigm to online education. Working and e-collaborations exploded during the outbreak of the Corona Virus crisis (Favale et al., 2020). As a result, the reach of online learning has also increased during this challenging time. From preschools to top-tier universities, most learning institutions now provide online education of varying degrees. Now, academic institutions can take this opportunity by training their teachers to teach and students to learn via online methods. People have always been complacent and have never sought new ways of teaching and learning. The crisis will be a new phase for online learning which will enable us to look at the positive side of e-learning technology. This is a time when there is a great deal of room to carry out exciting innovations and new advancements. Online education facilitates self-development which can be soon recognized by efficient teachers. However, this has also increased the workload for educators due to extended working hours. Particularly for teachers and professors living in rural areas facing issues of connectivity. However, statistics have shown that online learning has been proven to enhance the ability of students to retain information. As technology plays a vital role, various providers of educational services need to rethink their strategies and remain strong. COVID-19 has raised red flags in the education sector and has moved its way to digital growth.

Before 2019, neither SARS-CoV-2 nor its genetic sequences had ever been identified. Retrospective investigations identified human cases with onset of symptoms in December 2019. While some of the earliest known cases had a link to a wholesale food market in Wuhan, China, some did not. But eventually, it spread to all nations of the world, and shutdown economies, social lives, education, and other sectors. This research studied the effects of COVID-19 on adult education in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria. It made recommendations for sustainable adult education in the circumstances of COVID-19 and similar pandemics in the community. It is descriptive and drew data and information from primary and secondary sources. Through a self-structured questionnaire titled "Coronavirus, New Normal and Impacts on Adult Learning in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria," the community provided insight into its impact generally and on education particularly. They also made suggestions as panacea for sustainable adult learning in the circumstances of COVID-19 and similar pandemics. Records of some international and local agencies and organizations were perused. There were no records of COVID-19 cases in the study area. But the halo-effect was a great threat that devastated adult educators and learners. The community believed in and adhered to science and complemented it with traditional formulations. The community requires massive infrastructures to strengthen course delivery and administration of adult learning at all levels and in the circumstances of COVID-19 and similar pandemics. The community's role in breaking the chain of transmission of COVID-19 (the risk of contracting and transmitting it) must be done by implementing health protocols.    To provide an overview of the behavior and response of the community to implement health protocols by the Covid-19 Education Team in public places during the New Normal era in the city of Dumai.    This study is research with a qualitative approach. The data used in this study is to use observation which sees and directly observes people's behavior in the field and also takes some data online due to situations that require social distancing. This research was carried out in several public places, including the task stations of the Dumai City Covid-19 Education Team, which began in June-July 2020. The research subjects were the sources of data observed by the research problem.    In general, the behavior and response of the community to the implementation of health protocols during the New Normal period in public places by the Covid-19 Education Team could have been better. Moreover, several factors cause this, namely education, knowledge, and the community's economy. As well as developing issues, public confidence decreases about the dangers of the Covid-19 virus. The educational activities provided will only be meaningful if there is compliance and mutual community support.
