8Favorite Story "The Man Without A Country" (5-01-48) - Boxcars711 Old Time Radio Pod

By

FAVORITE STORY aired from September 1947 through December of 1949 hosted by Ronald Colman. This is an excellent dramatic series of great stories from classic literature brought to radio. It's popularity was so high and with such well done stories, it was rebroadcasted for many years.THIS EPISODE:MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRYThe protagonist of the story is a (fictional) young United States Army lieutenant named Philip Nolan, who developed a friendship with the visiting Aaron Burr. When Burr is tried for treason (as he actually was in 1807), Nolan was tried as an accomplice. During his testimony, Nolan bitterly renounced his nation, angrily shouting \"D--n the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!\" (When the novel was first published, the word \"damn\" was considered too obscene for publication.) Upon conviction, the judge icily granted Nolan his wish: he was to spend the rest of his life on warships of the United States Navy, in exile, with no right to ever again set foot on U.S. soil, and with no mention ever again made to him about his country. The sentence is carried out to the letter. None of those in whose custody Nolan remains will speak to him about the U.S., and his newspapers are censored. Nolan is unrepentant at first, but over the years becomes sadder and wiser. Deprived of a homeland, Nolan slowly and painfully learned the true worth of his country. He missed it more than his friends or family, more than art or music or love or nature. Without it, he was nothing. Dying, he shows his room to an officer named Danforth; it is \"a little shrine\" of patriotism. The Stars and Stripes are draped around a picture of George Washington. Over his bed, Nolan had painted an eagle, with lightning \"blazing from his beak\" and his claw grasping the globe. At the foot of his bed was a dated map of the old territories. Nolan smiled. \"Here, you see, I have a country!\" Nolan dies content after Danforth finally tells him all that has happened to the U.S. since his sentence was imposed.

Without Objection, It Is So Ordered. (Moment Of Silence.) Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I Ask Unanimous Consent That The Senate Proceed To The Immediate Consideration Of S. Res. 617, Submitted Earlier Today. The ACTING PRESIDENT Pro Tempore. Without Objection, The Clerk Will Report The Resolution By Title. The Legislative Clerk Read As Follows: A Resolution (S. Res. 617) Relative To The Death Of The Honorable Theodore ''Ted'' Fulton Stevens, Former Senator For The State Of Alaska. There Being No Objection, The Senate Proceeded To Consider The Resolution. Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I Would Like To Take This Opportunity, And I Think I Speak On Behalf Of All Of Our Colleagues, Certainly In Sentiment If Not My Exact Words, About Our Friend And Former Colleague, Ted Stevens. On Tuesday We Were All Deeply Saddened To Learn About His Tragic Passing. Ted's Dedication To His Nation Began With His Valiant Service In World War II And Endured Through Six Decades Of Public Service. Ted Helped Secure Statehood For His Beloved Alaska And Never Stopped Fighting For The People Of The Pioneer State For Over 40 Years As Its Senior Senator. Our Thoughts Are With Ted's Wife Catherine And The Entire Stevens Family And All Of Those Who Lost Their Lives And Were Injured In This Week's Sad Accident. Mr. President, I Want To Personally Add The Thoughts Of Senator Reid. I Spoke With Him Last Night. We Spoke About Senator Stevens And Remembered Him Fondly. Senator Reid Particularly Noted To Me One Of His Prize Possessions Was A Hulk Tie That Senator Stevens Had Given Him, And He Proudly Still Has It With Him. Mr. McCONNELL. Mr. President, In The History Of Our Country, No One Man Has Done More For One State Than Ted Stevens. His Commitment To The People Of Alaska And His Nation Spanned Decades, And He Left A Lasting Mark On Both. From His Early Military Service As A Pilot In World War II, To His Involvement In The Statehood Of The Last Frontier, To His Fierce Support And Defense Of Our Nation's Military, Ted Stevens Was Always There, Fighting For What He Believed In, And Usually Winning. He Was A Force To Be Reckoned With, And We Will Miss Him Greatly. We Extend Our Deepest Sympathies To Catherine And The Entire Stevens Family, And To The Families Of The Friends Who Were Lost In This Terrible Accident. Mr. SCHUMER. Ted was born in Indianapolis, IN, and was raised by his grandmother. When he was 13 he moved to Manhattan Beach, CA, where he lived with his aunt and uncle. Having promised his aunt he would not enlist until he was 19, Ted attended Oregon State College for one semester in 1942. On his 19th birthday Ted enlisted in the Marine Air Corps but he failed the eye test. He returned to California to take eye exercises. On March 15, 1943, Ted entered the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He became a pilot and flew missions in India and China in support of the Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force. He was awarded numerous medals for his service, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the war, Mr. Stevens completed degrees at UCLA and Harvard Law School. In 1950 he joined a law firm in Washington, DC, where he met his first wife Ann Cherrington. In 1952 Mr. Stevens accepted a position with Combs and Clasby, a law firm in Fairbanks. Later, in 1953 he became U.S. Attorney in Fairbanks. During President Eisenhower's administration, he took a job with the Interior Department in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked with many other Alaskans to push for Alaska statehood and became the Chief Legal Officer (the Solicitor) of Interior. In 1961 Ted returned to Alaska to practice law in Anchorage in the new State of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives in 1964. In his second term, Mr. Stevens became the House majority leader. Mr. Stevens was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1968 by then-Governor Walter J. Hickel to fill a vacancy created by the death of Senator E.L. (Bob) Bartlett. Two years later in 1970, Alaskans chose Senator Stevens to finish that term. He was re-elected in 1972, 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, and 2002. During his service in the Senate, Senator Stevens was instrumental in the passage of the legislation settling Alaska Native land claims, the authorization of the Trans- Alaska Pipeline, transfer of the Alaska Railroad to the State, creating the essential air service program and bypass mail service. He has worked tirelessly to improve health care, communications, and transportation for Alaskans. Ted fought to enact the 200 mile limit to protect Alaska's fisheries. He authored the American Fisheries Act to reduce foreign ownership of Alaska's fisheries and created the Community Development Quota Program to promote economic development in Western Alaska. Ted was a strong supporter of development of Alaska's resources including construction of a gas pipeline and opening the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Range to oil and gas exploration. He was a national leader on pension reform, women in sports, national security and defense. The Ted Stevens Amateur Sports Act created the U.S. Olympic Committee. The longest serving member of Alaska's congressional delegation, Senator Stevens had more years of service than any other Republican in the U.S. Senate and was the longest serving Senator in the history of the Republican Party. Having served for 4 years as the Senate's President pro tempore, the Presiding Officer in the absence of the Vice President, Senator Stevens also served as the Senate's President pro tempore emeritus; vice chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; cochairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee; and ranking member of the Disaster Recovery Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee. He was married to the former Catherine Bittner, a fourth generation Alaskan and lawyer. He has 6 children and 11 grandchildren. His first wife, Ann Cherrington Stevens, was killed in a 1978 airplane crash at the Anchorage Airport. On August 9, 2010, Senator Stevens was among five people who died in an airplane crash north of Dillingham, AK, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. ? MEMORIAL ADDRESSES AND OTHER TRIBUTES FOR TED STEVENS Proceedings in the Senate Thursday, August 12, 2010 prayer The Chaplain, Dr. Barry C. Black, offered the following prayer: Let us pray. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, You make all things and fill them with Your blessings. You created us to rejoice in the splendor of Your radiance. Help our Senators today to nurture the inner light of Your presence in their lives. Enable them to hear Your still small voice calling them to embrace Your wisdom and to follow Your leadership. Lord, we commend to You former Senator Ted Stevens. We thank You for his life and legacy and acknowledge that we are diminished by his sudden and unexpected death. We are grateful for his wisdom, dedication, patriotism, courage, and service. Comfort his family and all who mourn. We pray in Your merciful Name. Amen. MOMENT OF SILENCE Mr. SCHUMER. Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that the Senate observe a moment of silence in memory of our former colleague, the late Senator from Alaska, Ted Stevens. The ACTING PRESIDENT pro tempore. Mr. SCHUMER. I ask unanimous consent that the resolution be agreed to, the preamble be agreed to, the motions to reconsider be laid on the table en bloc, and that any statements relating to the resolution be printed in the Record. Mr. President, I Ask Unanimous Consent That The Senate Observe A Moment Of Silence In Memory Of Our Former Colleague, The Late Senator From Alaska, Ted Stevens. The ACTING PRESIDENT Pro Tempore. Mr. SCHUMER. LibriVox recording of The Man Without a Country and Other Tales, by Edward Everett Hale. Read by David Wales. Edward Everett Hale (1822 – 1909) was an American author, historian and Unitarian clergyman. Hale first came to notice as a writer in 1859, when he contributed the short story "My Double and How He Undid Me" to the Atlantic Monthly. He soon published other stories in the same periodical. His best known work was "The Man Without a Country", published in the Atlantic in 1863 and intended to strengthen support in the Civil War for the Union cause in the North. Though the story is set in the early 19th century, it is an allegory about the upheaval of the American Civil War. As in some of his other non-romantic tales, he employed a minute realism which led his readers to suppose the narrative a record of fact. These two stories and such others as "The Skeleton in the Closet", gave him a prominent position among short-story writers of 19th century America. Each story in this collection has an introduction. 43The Man Without A Country - Printed In Gregg Shorthand - Anniversary Edition

By

Here is the second Gregg Shorthand edition of The Man Without a Country. The shorthand plates match the 1929 Anniversary Gregg Shorthand Manual. This book was published circa 1931 with plates by Winifred Kenna Richmond. This book also appeared in a 1933 box set "American Readings in Gregg Shorthand" with four other Gregg Shorthand novels. The first Gregg Shorthand version of Man Without a Country was published in 1922 with Shorthand Plates by Harriet M. Johnson. It matches the 1916 Gregg Shorthand Manual. That version was later included in the collection book "Short Classics in Shorthand" (1927). This 1931 book entered the public domain as soon as it was first published. There is no copyright notice in the book. Any book first published in the US before January 1, 1978, without a proper copyright notice immediately went into the public domain at the time of publication. There are also no copyright notices in any of the other individual Gregg Shorthand novel versions of existing works, such as Alice in Wonderland, Rip Van Winkle, the Great Stone Face, etc. All copyrights belonged to the original material. Back then, the US Copyright Office did not allow Gregg to copyright shorthand novels based on existing literary works.

    1Peterkin Papers

    By

    Book's cover

The Peterkins were a lovable but comically inept family that possess ingenuity, logic, resourcefulness, and energy--but not common sense. The general formula is that the family tries to solve some problem in an appealingly roundabout way, fails, and is eventually rescued by "the wise old lady from Philadelphia" who always cuts the Gordian knot with some effective but prosaic solution. The charm of the story is not in the plot, but in the telling, with the building up of layers of complication, and the affectionate fun poked at the not-quite-cartoonish characters. The "wise old lady's" solution is usually obvious to the reader, or even the young listener, from the start. (From Wikipedia)

    2Peterkin Papers (version 2)

    By

The Peterkin Papers is a book-length collection of humorous stories by Lucretia Peabody Hale, and is her best-known work. The Peterkins are a lovable but comically inept family with ingenuity, logic, resourcefulness, and energy—but not common sense. Many chapters show the family trying to solve some problem in a roundabout way, failing, and eventually being rescued by "the wise old lady from Philadelphia," who cuts the Gordian knot with an effective but prosaic solution. The charm of the story is not in the plot, but in the telling, building up layers of complication, and the affectionate fun poked at the not-quite-cartoonish characters. The "wise old lady's" solution is usually obvious to the reader, even the young listener, from the start. (summary from Wikipedia)

    4Famous Sea Fights

    By

    Book's cover

I propose to tell in non-technical and popular language the story of some of the most remarkable episodes in the history of sea power. I shall begin with the first sea-fight of which we have a detailed history—the Battle of Salamis (B.C. 480), the victory by which Themistocles the Athenian proved the soundness of his maxim that "he who commands the sea commands all." I shall end with the last and greatest of naval engagements, the Battle of Tsu-shima, an event that reversed the long experience of victory won by West over East, which began with Salamis more than two thousand years ago.

I shall have to tell of British triumphs on the sea from Sluys to Trafalgar; but I shall take instances from the history of other countries also, for it is well that we should remember that the skill, enterprise, and courage of admirals and seamen is no exclusive possession of our own people.

I shall incidentally describe the gradual evolution of the warship from the wooden, oar-driven galleys that fought in the Straits of Salamis to the steel-built, steam-propelled giants that met in battle in the Straits of Tsu-shima. I shall have something to say of old seafaring ways, and much to tell of the brave deeds done by men of many nations. These true stories of the sea will, I trust, have not only the interest that belongs to all records of courage, danger, and adventure, but also some practical lessons of their own. 5Man Without A Country And Other Tales

    By

    Book's cover

Edward Everett Hale was an American author, historian and Unitarian clergyman. 9G.T.T., or The Wonderful Adventures of a Pullman

    By

More than a generation ago, a common joke when an insolvent debtor or any other loafer who had changed his home, wished to leave warning behind him where he had gone, he chalked upon his door the letters, "G.T.T." These letters were understood to mean "gone to Texas." Shortly before his death at The Alamo, Davy Crockett is quoted, regarding his last campaign for Congress: "I was, for some years, a member of Congress. In my last canvass, I told the people of my district, that, if they saw fit to re-elect me, I would serve them faithfully as I had done; but, if not, they might all go to h——, and I would go to Texas. I was beaten, gentlemen, and here I am." The roar of applause was like a thunder-burst.
Andrew Hale's long-forgotten book is NOT about Davy Crockett, but it IS about going to Texas in a Pullman train car, and various adventures that attached to it. Note: Special thanks to Beate and Eberhard Schneider of Germany and Katie Greenman, for their help with the lullaby recording in Chapter 6 and to Kazbec for the Italian song and lyrics in Chapter 12.
