XX Our top story this week.. couple of interesting nuggets in Tandem Diabetes' recent investor call. The company has grown at least 40% in nearly every quarter since late 2017 when the first major update came through on the Tslim X2. They're getting ready to launch Control IQ in Germany and France.. and they're moving ahead with studies of this hybrid closed loop system down to age 2. Timing of NEW features is still a bit up in the air.. the company says they answered more FDA questions about bolus by phone and feel on track for approval by the end of the year - iOS and Android. T-sport submission will now likely happen in 2022. Like a lot of diabetes tech, COVID pushed these timelines out. One other little tidbit.. looks like there won't be a big user manual with the mobile improvements - the training will be part of the app itself. Seems like common sense, but that's a big change that apparently the FDA asked for. https://seekingalpha.com/article/4445137-tandem-diabetes-cares-tndm-ceo-john-sheridan-on-q2-2021-results-earnings-call-transcript XX How about a closed loop for type 2? New research from the University of Cambridge shows it works just fine. This was interesting because the idea here was to look at people who require dialysis or a kidney transplant. This was a different system, a fully closed loop - no meal announcements needed. People using the artificial pancreas system spent more time in range and less time with hypos. This system has an adaptive algorithm and got better as it went, the average time in range on day one was 36% and by the third week it was 60%. They didn't list much about the technology here - but I'm going to follow up. It's not clear why these researchers aren't also studying this completely closed loop for people with type 1. They are moving ahead with a new study in people with type 2 who do not need dialysis. https://www.healtheuropa.eu/artificial-pancreas-trialled-in-type-2-diabetes-patients/110399/ XX New recommendations for gestational diabetes - screening should continue into the second trimester says the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. They say screening for gestational diabetes improves both maternal and infant health, and treatment. Gestational diabetes is estimated to occur in up to 9-percent of all pregnant women but might be up to three times as high depending on the diagnostic criteria used, say these researchers. The task force recommends clinicians screen for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks', using a two-step approach of both a screening tool (oral glucose challenge test) and diagnostic (oral glucose tolerance test), just the tolerance test, or fasting plasma glucose tests. https://www.medpagetoday.com/endocrinology/diabetes/93984 XX A new way of looking at glucagon.. these researchers say they want to administer it as a preventive.. writing in the journal of the American Chemical Society these researchers say they have developed hydrogels that remain intact in the presence of glucose but slowly destabilize as levels drop, releasing glucagon into the system, safely raising blood sugar. This is very early on and hasn't yet been tested in people.. the early challenges so far have been keeping the hydrogel stable and keeping the glucagon from leaking out of the water like structure. One study they point to is in a camel breeding community in North India which found that those who regularly consumed camel milk had a 0% rate of diabetes. Lubbock ISD hosted a ribbon cutting for the new Roger Green Supervised Agricultural Experience building. It will provide students with a state of the art facility to care for their animal projects and is located at our new AgriSTEM Complex. “Well, it's a tremendous honor. A lot of ex- students here, friends and family, and it's a tremendous honor. I was very surprised.” Students at Smith Elementary got into the sport of speed stacking. The Stars took part in a presentation during their P-E time where they learned how to stack and then practiced their skills. At Williams Elementary, Kindergarteners rounded out their Amplify unit about the Tortoise and the Hare with a fun race. Principal McCall and Assistant Principal Garcia dressed up as the Tortoise and the Hare and ran a race outside the school. “What did you learn from the story? Slow and steady wins the race.” Students from Estacado High School and the Talkington School for Young Women Leaders helped unload pumpkins at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The church supports our high school food pantries with funds raised from their pumpkin patch, and students say volunteering is a great way to support their schools and community. Honey Elementary welcomed students from Monterey High School's Chick-Fil-A Leader Academy. The Plainsmen brought the Honey Bears books as part of the program’s "Million Book Giveaway." High schoolers read with first and second graders and gave them a bundle of books to add to or start their home libraries. “So like, they were just super talkative. They didn’t let me read; they wanted to read to me. So I was like ‘okay’. Numerous articles and books have recently appeared criticizing the current leadership of the Armed Services and their collective inability to think critically, to adapt, or to innovate quickly, as well as their lack of tactical, operational, or strategic agility. However, the services have not sat idle; their individual doctrines, educational institutions, and professional journals abound with the need to create more adaptive, agile, and thinking leaders, and have done so for quite some time. Why have the solutions remained elusive? While the problem is surely complex, this paper will examine ways in which the U.S. military can enhance innovative thought and develop the pedagogical methodologies necessary to maintain a competitive advantage in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world. The paper will argue that a significant step toward addressing the problem could be made by integrating the work of John Boyd into the curriculum of professional military education (PME). It is time for a paradigm shift and a revolution in military affairs that begins with the way we think and learn about complex problems on today's battlefield.

Our Talkington School for Young Women Leaders hosted Big Family Olympics. It’s a fun opportunity for sixth graders to get to know their mentors from middle and high school. As you can see, the Lady Warriors had a lot of fun taking part in the challenges. “It makes our school a lot more connected and a lot more friendly to both middle school and high school.” Carmona-Harrison Elementary welcomed families for a special lunch in recognition of grandparents day. Each grade level had an opportunity to invite their grandparent to lunch and enjoy some special time during the school day. “Let’s get a little bit rowdy.” Lubbock High School pepped things for their first home football game of the season. The event included a special recognition for Eliseo Jimenez who walked from Lubbock to DC. Then, students celebrated Westerner Athletes from football and volleyball teams. Students from Roscoe-Wilson Elementary celebrated Buddy Holly’s Birthday during 50’s day. The Wranglers dressed in 50’s attire and listened and danced to 50’s music. They also invited families for a special lunch on campus. Mackenzie Middle School welcomed community members for mock interviews. We characterize constant mean curvature surfaces in the three-dimensional Heisenberg group by a family of flat connections on the trivial bundle $\D \times \GL$ over a simply connected domain $\mathbb{D}$ in the complex plane. In particular for minimal surfaces, we give an immersion formula, the so-called Sym-formula, and a generalized Weierstrass type representation via the loop group method.

We study what we call the all-loop anisotropic bosonized Thirring sigma model. This interpolates between the WZW model and the non-Abelian T-dual of the principal chiral model for a simple group. It has an invariance involving the inversion of the matrix parametrizing the coupling constants. We compute the general renormalization group flow equations which assume a remarkably simple form and derive its properties. For symmetric couplings, they consistently truncate to previous results in the literature. One of the examples we provide gives rise to a first order system of differential equations interpolating between the Lagrange and the Darboux-Halphen integrable systems.

Evidence for small amounts of very hot plasma has been found in active regions and might be the indication of an impulsive heating, released at spatial scales smaller than the cross section of a single loop. We investigate the heating and substructure of coronal loops in the core of one such active region by analyzing the light curves in the smallest resolution elements of solar observations in two EUV channels (94 A and 335 A) from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on-board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. We model the evolution of a bundle of strands heated by a storm of nanoflares by means of a hydrodynamic 0D loop model (EBTEL). The light curves obtained from the random combination of those of single strands are compared to the observed light curves either in a single pixel or in a row of pixels, simultaneously in the two channels and using two independent methods: an artificial intelligent system (Probabilistic Neural Network, PNN) and a simple cross-correlation technique. We explore the space of the parameters to constrain the distribution of the heat pulses, their duration and their spatial size, and, as a feedback on the data, their signatures on the light curves. From both methods the best agreement is obtained for a relatively large population of events (1000) with a short duration (less than 1 min) and a relatively shallow distribution (power law with index 1.5) in a limited energy range (1.5 decades). The feedback on the data indicates that bumps in the light curves, especially in the 94 A channel, are signatures of a heating excess that occurred a few minutes before.

We show that the space of generalized fluxes - momentum space - for loop quantum gravity cannot be constructed by Fourier transforming the projective limit construction of the space of generalized connections - position space - due to the non-abelianess of the gauge group SU(2). From the abelianization of SU(2), U(1)^3, we learn that the space of generalized fluxes turns out to be an inductive limit, and we determine the consistency conditions the fluxes should satisfy under coarse-graining of the underlying graphs. We comment on the applications to loop quantum cosmology, in particular, how the characterization of the Bohr compactification of the real line as a projective limit opens the way for a similar analysis for LQC.

We develop a generalization of the singlet sector valence bond basis projection algorithm of Sandvik, Beach, and Evertz (A. W. Sandvik, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 207203 (2005); K. S. D. Beach and A. W. Sandvik, Nucl. Phys. B750, 142 (2006); A. W. Sandvik and H. G. Evertz, arXiv:0807.0682, unpublished.) to cases in which the ground state of an antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian has total spin $S_{tot} = 1/2$ in a finite size system. We explain how various ground state expectation values may be calculated by generalizations of the estimators developed in the singlet case, and illustrate the power of the method by calculating the ground state spin texture and bond energies in a $L \times L$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with $L$ odd and free boundaries.

We give an explicit recursive formula for the all L-loop integrand for scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM in the planar limit, manifesting the full Yangian symmetry of the theory. This generalizes the BCFW recursion relation for tree amplitudes to all loop orders, and extends the Grassmannian duality for leading singularities to the full amplitude. It also provides a new physical picture for the meaning of loops, associated with canonical operations for removing particles in a Yangian-invariant way. Loop amplitudes arise from the "entangled" removal of pairs of particles, and are naturally presented as an integral over lines in momentum-twistor space. As expected from manifest Yangian-invariance, the integrand is given as a sum over non-local terms, rather than the familiar decomposition in terms of local scalar integrals with rational coefficients. Knowing the integrands explicitly, it is straightforward to express them in local forms if desired; this turns out to be done most naturally using a novel basis of chiral, tensor integrals written in momentum-twistor space, each of which has unit leading singularities. As simple illustrative examples, we present a number of new multi-loop results written in local form, including the 6- and 7-point 2-loop NMHV amplitudes. Very concise expressions are presented for all 2-loop MHV amplitudes, as well as the 5-point 3-loop MHV amplitude. The structure of the loop integrand strongly suggests that the integrals yielding the physical amplitudes are "simple", and determined by IR-anomalies. We briefly comment on extending these ideas to more general planar theories.

The first objective of this study is to investigate Einstein equations using a tractable assumption usually accepted in the literature. Quantum effects of the present cosmological model are examined in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. Finally we draw a parallel between the classical and quantum approaches.
