Description : The first Westerners Corral was established in Chicago in 1944 with the aim of promoting the study and understanding of Western history. Soon, corrals were springing up all over the United States -- and even internationally -- with the Los Angeles Corral being established in 1946 by oil executive Homer Britzman -- who was also elected founding Sheriff. The last remaining founding member, Glen Dawson, was one of the L.A. Corral's early Sheriffs and was a well-known rock climber, mountaineer, antiquarian bookseller (Dawson's Bookshop in Los Angeles was founded by his father, Ernest Dawson), and also served as director of the Sierra Club from 1937 to 1951. The Los Angeles Corral of Westerners regularly convenes to hear historians and other speakers present western-related topics -- particularly California -- as well as to celebrate the western spirit through annual Rendezvous and Fandangos. Media362-1 Side A-"The Last Cattle Drive Through Tyler" by Dr. Robert W. Glover 13:10 minutes into the audio the speaker is introduced as Dr. Robert Glover. This program is Inspired by an old typescript dated 1926 and titled The History of Tyler by Sidney F. Baker, Jr. as related to him by his mother, Mrs. S.F. Baker, and Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Bell, Sr. “You can hear them coming for hours before they made it to town.  Longhorns crushing the brush and snapping the saplings as they crowded down the narrow road” - Palestine Road through the town of Tyler. Listen as Dr. Glover discusses Texas’ push to get their huge amount of beef up North (longhorn cattle numbered in the millions by the end of the Civil War).
