An abstract approximation framework is developed for the finite and infinite time horizon discrete-time linear-quadratic regulator problem for systems whose state dynamics are described by a linear semigroup of operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The schemes included the framework yield finite dimensional approximations to the linear state feedback gains which determine the optimal control law. Convergence arguments are given. Examples involving hereditary and parabolic systems and the vibration of a flexible beam are considered. Spline-based finite element schemes for these classes of problems, together with numerical results, are presented and discussed.

The measurements include both the mean and turbulent flow properties. The mean flow velocities, flow inclination and static pressure are measured using a calibrated three-hole yaw probe. The measurements of all the relevant Reynolds stress components in the wake are made using a tri-axial hot-wire probe and a digital data processing technique developed by the authors. The development of the three dimensional near-wake into a nearly two dimensional far-wake is discussed in the light of the experimental data. A complete set of wake data along with the data on the initial boundary layer in the trailing edge region of the airfoil are tabulated in an appendix to the report.

The cosine or correlation measures of similarity used to cluster high dimensional data are interpreted as projections, and the orthogonal components are used to define a complementary dissimilarity measure to form a similarity-dissimilarity measure pair. Using a geometrical approach, a number of properties of this pair is established. This approach is also extended to general inner-product spaces of any dimension. These properties include the triangle inequality for the defined dissimilarity measure, error estimates for the triangle inequality and bounds on both measures that can be obtained with a few floating-point operations from previously computed values of the measures. The bounds and error estimates for the similarity and dissimilarity measures can be used to reduce the computational complexity of clustering algorithms and enhance their scalability, and the triangle inequality allows the design of clustering algorithms for high dimensional distributed data.

We introduce a numerical method to obtain approximate eigenvalues for some problems of Sturm-Liouville type. As an application, we consider an infinite square well in one dimension in which the mass is a function of the position. Two situations are studied, one in which the mass is a differentiable function of the position depending on a parameter $b$. In the second one the mass is constant except for a discontinuity at some point. When the parameter $b$ goes to infinity, the function of the mass converges to the situation described in the second case. One shows that the energy levels vary very slowly with $b$ and that in the limit as $b$ goes to infinity, we recover the energy levels for the second situation.

Formal Laplace operators are analyzed for a large class of resistance networks with vertex weights. The graphs are completed with respect to the minimal resistance path metric. Compactness and a novel connectivity hypothesis for the completed graphs play an essential role. A version of the Dirichlet problem is solved. Self adjoint Laplace operators and the probability semigroups they generate are constructed using reflecting and absorbing conditions on subsets of the graph boundary.

The electroelastic 4 $\times$ 4 Green's function of a piezoelectric hexagonal (transversely isotropic) infinitely extended medium is calculated explicitly in closed compact form (eqs. (73) ff. and (88) ff., respectively) by using residue calculation. The results can also be derived from Fredholm's method [2]. In the case of vanishing piezoelectric coupling the derived Green's function coincides with two well known results: Kr{\"o}ner 's expressions for the elastic Green's function tensor [4] is reproduced and the electric part then coincides with the electric potential (solution of Poisson equation) which is caused by a unit point charge. The obtained electroelastic Green's function is useful for the calculation of the electroelastic Eshelby tensor [16].

We study the validity of the so-called Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation for a two dimensional system of stochastic partial differential equations, subject to a constant magnetic field. As the small mass limit does not yield to the solution of the corresponding first order system, we regularize our problem by adding a small friction. We show that in this case the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation holds. We also give a justification of the regularization, by showing that the regularized problems provide a good approximation to the original ones.

Applying a well-known theorem due to Eidelheit, we give a short proof of the surjectivity of the combinatorial Laplacian on connected locally finite undirected simplicial graph $G$ with countably infinite vertex set $V$, established by Ceccherini-Silberstein, Coornaert, and Dodziuk. In fact, we show that every linear operator on $\mathbb{K}^V$ which has finite hopping range and satisfies the pointwise maximum principle is surjective.

The results show a realistic behavior for the dependance of edge localized states of zigzag graphene on the edge sites properties which explaining the experimental results of measured local density of states at the edge of graphene, while at the same time removing the inconsistence between the semiconductor behavior found in the experimental data for fabricated GNRs and the expected theoretical semi-metallic behavior calculated without considering the edge properties effect on the edge localized states.

We explicitly construct a coupling attaining Ornstein's $\bar{d}$-distance between ordered pairs of binary chains of infinite order. Our main tool is a representation of the transition probabilities of the coupled bivariate chain of infinite order as a countable mixture of Markov transition probabilities of increasing order. Under suitable conditions on the loss of memory of the chains, this representation implies that the coupled chain can be represented as a concatenation of iid sequence of bivariate finite random strings of symbols. The Schr\"odinger wave function has microstates for such reflection. The reflection time is a function of the microstate. For oblique reflection, the Goos-H\"anchen displacement is also a function of the microstate. For a square well duct, we develop a proposed test where consistent overdetermination of the trajectory by a redundant set of observed constants of the motion would be beyond the Copenhagen interpretation.

We consider the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model (bosons interacting via 2-body delta potentials) in the infinite coupling constant limit (the so-called Tonks-Girardeau model). This model might be relevant as a description of atomic Bose gases confined in a one-dimensional geometry. It is known to have a fermionic spectrum since the N-body wavefunctions have to vanish at coinciding points, and therefore be symmetrizations of fermionic Slater wavefunctions. We argue that in the infinite coupling constant limit the model is indistinguishable from free fermions, i.e., all physically accessible observables are the same as those of free fermions. Therefore, Bose-Einstein condensate experiments at finite energy that preserve the one-dimensional geometry cannot test any bosonic characteristic of such a model.

The analytical result involves a finite sum over associated Legendre functions, $P_l^m(x)$, of degree $l$ and order $m$. The sum allows for values of $|m|$ that are greater than $l$. A generalisation for the associated Legendre functions to allow for any rational $m$ for a specific $l$ is also shown

In this paper we investigate the infinite convergent sum $T=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{P(n)}{Q(n)}$, where $P(x)\in\bar{\mathbb{Q}}[x]$, $Q(x)\in\mathbb{Q}[x]$ and $Q(x)$ has only simple rational zeros. N. Saradha and R. Tijdeman have obtained sufficient and necessary conditions for the transcendence of $T$ if the degree of $Q(x)$ is 3. In this paper we give sufficient and necessary conditions for the transcendence of $T$ if the degree of $Q(x)$ is 4 and $Q(x)$ is reduced.

We prove that the Waldhausen nilpotent class group of an injective index 2 amalgamated free product is isomorphic to the Farrell-Bass nilpotent class group of a twisted polynomial extension. As an application, we show that the Farrell-Jones Conjecture in algebraic K-theory can be sharpened from the family of virtually cyclic subgroups to the family of finite-by-cyclic subgroups.

We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth \lambda_{ab} in the infinite-layer electron-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductor Sr_0.9La_0.1CuO_2 by means of muon-spin rotation. The observed temperature and magnetic field dependences of \lambda_{ab} are consistent with the presence of a substantial s-wave component in the superconducting order parameter in good agreement with the results of tunneling, specific heat, and small-angle neutron scattering experiments.

Given a graph $G$, an identifying code $C \subseteq V(G)$ is a vertex set such that for any two distinct vertices $v_1,v_2\in V(G)$, the sets $N[v_1]\cap C$ and $N[v_2]\cap C$ are distinct and nonempty (here $N[v]$ denotes a vertex $v$ and its neighbors). We study the case when $G$ is the infinite hexagonal grid $H$. Cohen et.al. constructed two identifying codes for $H$ with density $3/7$ and proved that any identifying code for $H$ must have density at least $16/39\approx0.410256$. Both their upper and lower bounds were best known until now. Here we prove a lower bound of $12/29\approx0.413793$.

We complete classical investigations concerning the dynamical stability of an infinite homogeneous gaseous medium described by the Euler-Poisson system or an infinite homogeneous stellar system described by the Vlasov-Poisson system (Jeans problem). To determine the stability of an infinite homogeneous stellar system with respect to a perturbation of wavenumber k, we apply the Nyquist method. We first consider the case of single-humped distributions and show that, for infinite homogeneous systems, the onset of instability is the same in a stellar system and in the corresponding barotropic gas, contrary to the case of inhomogeneous systems. We show that this result is true for any symmetric single-humped velocity distribution, not only for the Maxwellian. If we specialize on isothermal and polytropic distributions, analytical expressions for the growth rate, damping rate and pulsation period of the perturbation can be given. Then, we consider the Vlasov stability of symmetric and asymmetric double-humped distributions (two-stream stellar systems) and determine the stability diagrams depending on the degree of asymmetry. We compare these results with the Euler stability of two self-gravitating gaseous streams. Finally, we determine the corresponding stability diagrams in the case of plasmas and compare the results with self-gravitating systems.

We investigate the least number of palindromic factors in an infinite word. We first consider general alphabets, and give answers to this problem for periodic and non-periodic words, closed or not under reversal of factors. We then investigate the same problem when the alphabet has size two.

Based on an integration by parts formula for closed and convex subsets $\Gamma$ of a separable real Hilbert space $H$ with respect to a Gaussian measure, we first construct and identify the infinite dimensional analogue of the obliquely reflected Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process (perturbed by a bounded drift $B$) by means of a Skorokhod type decomposition. The variable oblique reflection at a reflection point of the boundary $\partial \Gamma$ is uniquely described through a reflection angle and a direction in the tangent space (more precisely through an element of the orthogonal complement of the normal vector) at the reflection point. In case of normal reflection at the boundary of a regular convex set and under some monotonicity condition on $B$, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution to the corresponding SDE. Subsequently, we consider an increasing sequence $(\Gamma_{\alpha_k})_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ of closed and convex subsets of $H$ and the skew reflection problem at the boundaries of this sequence. We present concrete examples and obtain as a special case the infinite dimensional analogue of the $p$-skew reflected Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
