A complete characterization of Wishart distributions on the cones of positive semi-definite matrices is provided in terms of a description of their maximal parameter domain. This result is new in that also degenerate scale parameters are included. For such cases, the standard constraints on the range of the shape parameter may be relaxed. Furthermore, the infinitely divisible Wishart distributions are revealed as suitable transformations and embeddings of one dimensional gamma distributions. This note completes the findings of L\'evy (1937) concerning infinite divisibility and Gindikin (1975) regarding the existence issue.

We study quantum resonance behavior of the infinite-range kinetic Ising model at zero temperature. Numerical integration of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation in the presence of an external magnetic field in the $z$ direction is performed at various transverse field strengths $g$. It is revealed that two resonance peaks occur when the energy gap matches the external driving frequency at two distinct values of $g$, one below and the other above the quantum phase transition. From the similar observations already made in classical systems with phase transitions, we propose that the double resonance peaks should be a generic feature of continuous transitions, for both quantum and classical many-body systems.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is a quasilinear stochastic partial differential equation(SPDE) driven by a space-time white noise. In recent years there have been several works directed towards giving a rigorous meaning to a solution of this equation. Bertini, Cancrini and Giacomin have proposed a notion of a solution through a limiting procedure and a certain renormalization of the nonlinearity. In this work we study connections between the KPZ equation and certain infinite dimensional forward-backward stochastic differential equations. Forward-backward equations with a finite dimensional noise have been studied extensively, mainly motivated by problems in mathematical finance. Equations considered here differ from the classical works in that, in addition to having an infinite dimensional driving noise, the associated SPDE involves a non-Lipschitz (namely a quadratic) function of the gradient. Existence and uniqueness of solutions of such infinite dimensional forward-backward equations is established and the terminal values of the solutions are then used to give a new probabilistic representation for the solution of the KPZ equation.

The paper is devoted to the study of a stabilization problem for the 2D incompressible Euler system in an infinite strip with boundary controls. We show that for any stationary solution (c, 0) of the Euler system there is a control which is supported in a given bounded part of the boundary of the strip and stabilizes the system to (c, 0).

In this paper the moduli space of Higgs pairs over a fixed smooth projective curve with extra formal data is defined and it is endowed with a scheme structure. We introduce a relative version of the Krichever map using a fibration of Sato Grassmannians and show that this map is injective. This fact and the characterization of the points of the image of the Krichever map allow us to prove that this moduli space is a closed subscheme of the product of the moduli of vector bundles (with formal extra data) and a formal anologue of the Hitchin base. This characterization also provide us the method to compute explicitely KP-type equations which describe the moduli space of Higgs pairs. Finally, for the case where the spectral cover is totally ramified at a fixed point of the curve, these equations are given in terms of the characteristic coefficients of the Higgs field.

The paper concerns the classical occupancy scheme with infinitely many boxes. We establish approximations to the distributions of the number of occupied boxes, and of the number of boxes containing exactly r balls, within the family of translated Poisson distributions. These are shown to be of ideal asymptotic order, with respect both to total variation distance and to the approximation of point probabilities. The proof is probabilistic, making use of a translated Poisson approximation theorem of R\"ollin (2005).

We introduce the concept of constant 2-labelling of a weighted graph and show how it can be used to obtain periodic sphere packing. Roughly speaking, a constant 2-labelling of a weighted graph is a 2-coloring (black and white) of its vertex set which preserves the sum of the weight of black vertices under some automorphisms. In this manuscript, we study this problem on weighted complete graphs and on weighted cycles. Our results on cycles allow us to determine (r,a,b)-codes in Z^2 whenever |a-b|>4 and r>1.

The construction of the general solution sequence of row-finite linear systems is accomplished by implementing -ad infinitum- the Gauss-Jordan algorithm under a rightmost pivot elimination strategy. The algorithm generates a basis (finite or Schauder) of the homogeneous solution space for row-finite systems. The infinite Gaussian elimination part of the algorithm solves linear difference equations with variable coefficients of regular order, including equations of constant order and of ascending order. The general solution thus obtained can be expressed as a single Hessenbergian.

The hole spectral function of the t-J model on a two-dimensional semi-infinite lattice is calculated using the spin-wave and noncrossing approximations. In the case of small hole concentration and strong correlations, $t\gg J$, several near-boundary site rows appear to be depleted of holes. The reason for this depletion is a deformation of the magnon cloud, which surrounds the hole, near the boundary. The hole depletion in the boundary region leads to a more complicated spectral function in the boundary row in comparison with its bulk shape.

Working on the framework of Relativistic Mean Field theory, we exposed the effect of nonlinear isoscalar-isovector coupling on G2 parameter set on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy in infinite nuclear matter. The observables like symmetric energy and few related coefficients are studied systematically. We presented the results of stiff symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities and a soft variation at normal densities. Correlation between the symmetric energy and the isoscalar-isovector coupling parameter fully demonstrated for wide range of density. The work further extended to the octet system and showed the effect of coupling over the equation of state.

This extends a result by A. Lichtman.

The transition process which takes place in the attachment-line boundary layer in the presence of gross contamination is an issue of considerable interest to wing designers. It is well known that this flow is very sensitive to the presence of isolated roughness and that transition can be initiated at a very low value of the local medium thickness Reynolds number.Moreover, once the attachment line is turbulent, the flow over the whole wing chords, top and bottom surface, will be turbulent and this has major implications for wind drag.

An abstract approximation framework is developed for the finite and infinite time horizon discrete-time linear-quadratic regulator problem for systems whose state dynamics are described by a linear semigroup of operators on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The schemes included the framework yield finite dimensional approximations to the linear state feedback gains which determine the optimal control law. Convergence arguments are given. Examples involving hereditary and parabolic systems and the vibration of a flexible beam are considered. Spline-based finite element schemes for these classes of problems, together with numerical results, are presented and discussed.

The cosine or correlation measures of similarity used to cluster high dimensional data are interpreted as projections, and the orthogonal components are used to define a complementary dissimilarity measure to form a similarity-dissimilarity measure pair. Using a geometrical approach, a number of properties of this pair is established. This approach is also extended to general inner-product spaces of any dimension. These properties include the triangle inequality for the defined dissimilarity measure, error estimates for the triangle inequality and bounds on both measures that can be obtained with a few floating-point operations from previously computed values of the measures. The bounds and error estimates for the similarity and dissimilarity measures can be used to reduce the computational complexity of clustering algorithms and enhance their scalability, and the triangle inequality allows the design of clustering algorithms for high dimensional distributed data.

This is done by substituting back the original energy eigenstates and eigenvalues into the Schrodinger equation. We then obtain a precise functional form of the V(x). From this reformed model, we show that energy eigenstates and eigenvalues can directly be obtained without the need of imposing boundary condition, Ehrenfest's theorem can directly be confirmed, and ambiguities in the original model can be resolved.

In 1921, American poet H.D. collected and published a selection of previously published poems by Marianne Moore. George Moore, an Irish writer involved with the Celtic Revival was influenced by the French Realists and particularly by the work of Émile Zola. Often considered as the first modern Irish novelist he became involved with Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats in the establishment of the Irish Literary Theatre. As part of his involvement with the Literary Revival, he wrote a set of short stories set in Ireland, drawn from his experiences growing up on his family’s estates in Co. Mayo. The stories were intended to be translated into Irish as a part of a new tradition of Gaelic Literature. <br> The stories were later published in English as The Untilled Field, in 1903. Moore was initially influenced by Ivan Turgenyev’s collection of short stories, Tales of a Sportsman and in turn they are thought to have been an influence on James Joyce’s Dubliners collection. Moore’s stories look at Irish rural life at the end of the 19th Century and examines the role that the clergy played in the lives of those who remained after mass emigration denuded the Irish countryside. - Summary by Noel Badrian

Clement Clarke Moore (July 15, 1779 – July 10, 1863) was an American Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, as well as Divinity and Biblical Learning, at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He is the author of the yuletide poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", which later became famous as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas". <br /> This poem seems to be a 'moral' version of "The Night Before Christmas".
