This study is a follow-up to the first experiment of the project testing the effect of variability of appearance and context on face learning (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/6GP8B). The aim of this second experiment is to investigate the impact of learning context on the encoding of stable and variable faces.

In our daily life, we are continuously experiencing a rich amount of visual information. However, the brain is physiologically limited and does not allow us to maintain all these data in memory. Our cognitive system then needs to select elements to remember and summarize the visual load of information in long-term memory (Jeunehomme et al., 2018). Our project aims at investigating these processes in the context of face learning and at testing the recent cost-efficient hypothesis proposed by Devue and de Sena (2023). The main question is to evaluate to what extent variability in appearance and in context guide the visual compression of faces embedded in a scene.
