Empathy is a crucial social-emotional skill that enables children to understand and respond to others’ emotions. It plays an important role in building positive relationships and fostering emotional well-being. Early childhood is a key period for empathy development, as children begin to form the emotional and social foundations for future interactions. Picture books, with their rich stories and characters, offer an effective medium for promoting empathy, helping children recognize and engage with diverse emotional experiences. Research has shown that empathy training can enhance children’s empathy, especially in older age groups, but there is limited research on structured empathy interventions for preschool-aged children. This study seeks to address this gap by designing a picture book-based empathy training program specifically for kindergarten children (aged 5 to 6). The study will be conducted through an experimental design comparing an experimental group (receiving training) and a control group (receiving regular teaching). Empathy levels will be measured with the children’s empathy questionnaire, and additional insights will be gathered through observations and interviews with children and teachers. The goal of this study is to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of picture book -based empathy training and offer practical guidance for integrating empathy education into early childhood curricula, thus supporting children’s emotional and social development.
