By

229 pages. Includes index and bibliographic references. C. 2004, 2008 (2nd edition). This is a comprehensive guide for addiction scientists facing the complex process of publishing in scholarly journals. Written by an international group of addiction science journal editors and their colleagues, Publishing Addiction Science tackles such issues as choosing a journal, publishing qualitative research, responding to reviewers reports, becoming a reviewer yourself, and appropriate responses to ethical issues common to addiction science publishing. Addiction science publishing has grown tremendously in the past 30 years. There are now close to 90 journals in 17 languages that specialize in addiction science as part of their broader mission. Despite these expanding opportunities, getting research published not only begins with choosing a journal: the conscientious researcher also faces a host of potential language, authorship, citation, and ethical issues. International in its scope, and now in a thoroughly revised, expanded, and updated second edition, the book gives special attention to the challenges for researchers from developing and non-English-speaking countries. Publishing Addiction Science is co-sponsored by the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors, and the Society for the Study of Addiction. Chapters: 1 A Guide for the Perplexed 2: How to Choose a Journal: Scientific and Practical Considerations 3: Beyond the Anglo-American World: Advice for Researchers from Developing or Non-English-Speaking Countries 4: Getting Started: Publication Issues for Graduate Students, Postdoctoral fellows, and Other Novice Addiction Scientists 5: How to Write a Scientific Paper for a Peer-reviewed Journal 6: How to Write Publishable Qualitative Research 7: Use and Abuse of Citations 8: Coin of the Realm: Practical Procedures for Determining Authorship 9: Preparing Manuscripts and Responding to Reviewers' Reports: Inside the Editorial Black Box 10: Reviewing Manuscripts for Addiction Journals: An Application of the Golden Rule 11: Dante's Inferno: Seven Deadly Sins in Scientific Publishing and How to Avoid Them 12: The Road to Paradise: Moral Reasoning in Addiction Publishing 13: Relationships with the Alcoholic Beverage Industry, Pharmaceutical Companies, and Other Funding Agencies: Holy Grail or Poisoned Chalice? 14: Addiction Publishing and the Meaning of (Scientific) Life.

LibriVox recording of The Guide for the Perplexed, Part One by Moses Maimonides. (Translated by Michael Friedländer.) Read in English by Daniel Davison; Sovietgnome; czandra The Guide for the Perplexed by Mūsá ibn Maymūn (known throughout the Christian West as Moses Maimonides) is regarded as one of the most important works of Medieval Jewish thought. The book attempted to harmonize the philosophy of Aristotle with the Rabbinical teachings, but was regarded by many at the time as antithetical to Jewish theology, despite its earnest arguments in vindication of the ways of God. - Summary by Daniel Davison For further information, including links to online text, reader information, RSS feeds, CD cover or other formats (if available), please go to the LibriVox catalog page for this recording. In the Guide of the Perplexed Maimonides (Moses ben Maimon) achieved an original and highly influential synthesis of religious and secular learning, drawing on Rabbinical teachings, the Aristotelian and neo-Platonic doctrines then current in the Islamic world, as well as his own scriptural exegeses and philosophical arguments. According to Encyclopaedia Judaica, "almost every philosophic work for the remainder of the Middle Ages cited, commented on, or criticized Maimonides' views." - Summary by Kazbek

By

The Guide for the Perplexed, Part 3 (Arabic: دلالة الحائرين Dalālat al-ḥā'irīn דלאלת אלחאירין; Hebrew: מורה נבוכים Moreh Nevuchim) by Rabbi Moses ben Maimon the Sephardi (משה ברבי מימון הספרדי) who is commonly known as Maimonides and also referred to by the acronym Rambam (רמב״ם). The Guide was written in Judeo-Arabic using the Hebrew alphabet in the form of a three-part letter to the Rambam's student, Rabbi Joseph ben Judah of Ceuta. Maimonides says, "To give a full explanation of the mystic passages of the Bible is contrary to the Law and to reason; besides, my knowledge of them is based on reasoning, not on divine inspiration. I have not received my belief in this respect from any teacher, but it has been formed by what I learnt from Scripture and the utterances of our Sages, and by the philosophical principles which I have adopted. ... I ask you to study attentively the chapters which follow on this sublime, important, and grand subject, which is the pin upon which everything hangs, and the pillar upon which everything rests." Translated by Michael Friedländer who was principal of Jews' College. Cover: The Serpent Beguiled Me by cartoonist Robin Bougie. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia and the text)
