This Joint Applied Project examines the U.S. Army Rapid Equipping Force (REF) processes, practices and lessons learned for fulfilling emerging urgent needs in the current Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO). It compares Army rapid acquisition policies and processes to the execution of a traditional Urgent Materiel Release (UMR) program to identify opportunities to improve the responsiveness of rapid acquisition programs executed by traditional program management offices. The project establishes a baseline and analyzes the implications of existing policies, processes, and practices for executing rapid acquisition programs. It draws conclusions and offers recommendations for continuing improvements towards a more modern and responsive rapid acquisition process. The findings indicate that the Army REF is adapting and evolving processes to better respond to the urgent needs of its operational commanders and the warfighter that can be applied by traditional acquisition organizations.

The comorbidity of developmental coordination disorder (DCD) has been reported to be higher in other neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (APA, 2013). Motor coordination impairments affect daily activities (e.g., buttoning, use of eating utensils such as chopsticks, and writing). Early intervention is needed to prevent the loss of self-esteem and encourage social participation. Predictive motor control has been postulated as one of the factors contributing to impaired motor coordination in neurodevelopmental disorders (Adams et al., 2017). However, individual differences in motor function in early childhood are much greater than in adulthood, making it difficult to determine predictive motor control problems. The purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate more specific features of predictive motor control deficits and develop new objective assessment indicators for clinical implementation. The study focuses on motor planning in early childhood as predictive motor control. A previous study has reported that children with DCD show problems in force control (i.e., less steady force) (Smits-Engelsman et al., 2008), and another previous study has reported poor ability to integrate somatosensory feedback information during a visually guided precision grip force test in children with ASD (Shafer et al., 2021). This study attempts to measure grasping force control and variance of the force during reach-to-grasp and transfer tasks.

In this experiment, we adapt a paradigm by Shergill et. al., (2003). In this paradigm, a lever that is equipped with a pressure sensor and attached to a torque motor is installed above the participants left index finger. The torque motor produces a force ranging between 0.5 and 2.70 Newton, transduced by the lever. Participants are instructed to reproduce the same force that was applied from the machine either with their right index finger (manual condition), or through moving a linear potentiometer that steers an electric engine which transduces a linear increase of force onto the participants left index finger (potentiometer condition). According to the comparator model, if there is congruency between the predicted and the observed sensory consequences of an action, this movement is attributed as self-generated. If there is a mismatch between prediction and sensory consequences, this action is labelled as externally generated. The force matching task usually leads to a sensory attenuation if the pressure is generated by one's finger rather than by the potentiometer. This somatosensory attenuation can also be seen as a marker of body ownership when the task requires active movement. Specifically, it has been found that patients with schizophrenia show significantly less sensory attenuation compared to healthy controls, which, they argue, is due to a dysfunction in their predictive mechanisms typical for patients with schizophrenia. Our first aim of this study is, to replicate their findings with a similar device.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has significantly increased concerns over authoritarian military aggression around the world. The concerns over the potential spread of authoritarian military aggression raise important questions about the determinants of authoritarian military aggression and the effectiveness of potential measures, such as economic sanctions, to limit such aggression. Specifically, we ask: Does the Russian invasion of Ukraine increase support for the Chinese government's use of military force in international affairs among the Chinese public? Do Western economic sanctions and military (in)actions against the Russian invasion of Ukraine affect such public support for the use of military force in China? We plan to conduct an online survey experiment in mainland China. The purpose of the survey experiment is to present respondents with relevant information about the invasion and test the effect of learning about the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Chinese individuals' attitudes toward the Chinese government's use of force.

Talent management in the United States Army is a challenging and complex issue, with many factors contributing to a Soldier’s decision whether to remain in military service. Preservation of the Force and Family (POTFF) is intended to increase individual resiliency among USSOCOM’s service members across its four pillars of physical, psychological, spiritual, and family performance. Could the services of POTFF also increase retention? Using data from USSOCOM’s annual Needs Assessment Survey, we built a model to answer that question. Using logistic regression, we chose one question from the survey to represent each pillar of POTFF against the question about Soldier’s intent to remain in service until retirement. Our findings indicate that Soldiers who use Human Performance Centers and chaplain-led retreats have a higher probability of retention intention than those who do not. This could indicate that increased command emphasis on those programs would improve retention among the U.S. Army Special Operators we analyzed. Gathering useful data from the surveys on psychological and spiritual health is challenging and warrants further research.
